Death of Lydia Litvyak - Top scoring female pilot of all time | 3 - 18 victories - 1st August 1943

Ойын-сауық

On 1st August, 1943, while escorting a flight of IL-2 Sturmoviks in her Yak 1b, Senior Lieutenant Lydia ‘Lylia’ Litvyak attacked a formation of German bombers. In the process, she was attacked by a formation of Bf 109s. An intense dogfight broke out in which Litvyak became separated from her comrades and she was last seen with smoke billowing from her Yak. She is believed to have rammed her attacker or been struck in the head by German fire.

@Old Corps In 22.06.1941 commies had 20 000 airplanes on the border with Germany. Luftwaffe had 2300 planes for the preemptive attack. Most soviet planes were just abandoned on the temporary airfields. And there was nothing wrong with the airplane models, there were very decent planes among them. Purges also didnt affect much. The fear of the NKVD that purges created actually kept SU together under the attack of Wehrmacht.

Josef Stalin had ordered the creation of a female group of aerobatic aircraft before the onset of the WWII. Lydia Lidviak was one of the girls chosen for that group. The training of the new fighter pilots in the Soviet Union was very brief and pilots were pushed into action with lack experience. Lidviak was an exception. A rumour says that she had "shot down" her trainer during the training dogfight ( she didn't pull the trigger, but she placed the viser on him ). I have read that her total score was 12 victories and one observation baloon ( that gave coordinates to the German artilery ). Along with the unconfirmed victories she might have had 17 airial kills.

I'd say female fighter pilots didn't have a lot of chances to survive at that war. Even if their skill was better than opponents', at some points of a fight it became the matter of stamina not skill who would win, and women obviously weren't match to men in this regard. Fighting at the speed of 400+ km/h took a lot of physicalty. I mean there is no any female F1 pilot right now, and I'm not even sure there were any in the past. And F1 is much slower than WW2 fighters were.

Interesting. There are three possibilities: Litvyak's story is true and she really was a female ace as claimed. Her record was exaggerated for propagand purposes. She was invented out of thin air by Soviet propaganda. They had a history of such things.

The material may be good, but the information about the "combat achievements" of the Soviet "aces" must be approached with reserve and caution. Many of these "aces" were just lying like all their propaganda

I'm not going to say "lie" as that implies an intentional untruth. However, claims, including "confirmed", were vastly overstated. You fire at somebody, his plane belches black smoke, and dives, it's recorded on gun camera - kill. Except what really happened is he firewalled the throttle and did a split-s and went home. The numbers don't lie - actual losses are a fraction of awarded victories. Over claiming was just a thing that happened when people try to kill each other at over 300 MPH. I think that it is possible to respect the bravery without worrying too much about the exact numbers. Litvak probably didn't shoot down 11. Hartmann probably didn't shoot down 352. Johnson probably didn't shoot down 28. Doesn't matter. They were all highly respected pilots who did their job extremely well. As for lying Russian propaganda - I'm not too thrilled with Russia either, but I am not going to let that reflect on a person who died almost 60 years ago. Litvak was not on the wrong side of history the way that Russian soldiers in Ukraine are today.

@@patwilson2546 You know buddy, you obviously don't know the realities of life in the Soviet version of communism, so explaining anything to you is like Don Quichotte's fight against windmills. Of course, neither do you know the Soviet female pilot, but all these "achievements" of her are highly debatable in my opinion. By the way - the planes of the coalition and the Luftwaffe planes had cameras mounted, after pressing the trigger they recorded the course of the fight. I do not know the fact that any Soviet aircraft have such devices (technological gap). Russian soldiers are the same victims of the war, and Russian civilians are also killed by gunfighters. So I do not share your delight.
