These fish are trevally salt water fish. They are in the river flooded with freshwater. They can't live in freshwater

Makes sense. Larger organisms need higher oxygen content, and these brutes simply couldn't keep up with the drop in DO levels.

I’ve fished the other side a few times, always get our bait there too. Never knew there was some big dogs like that hanging round there holy shit

That's horrible, but it does make sense, as someone else said bigger fish need more oxygen but it's still a sad thing to see

I copied my reply to another person who asked a similar question Brian. So the life cycle of these fish are, they get through drains which more often than not have a mess cover at the point of entry. You can squeeze in as a juvenile without a problem. Some may be able to navigate their way out, where others choose to stay because of healthy bait fish food sources or cannot find their way out of these lakes which are referred to as land locked. Some fish get to a size where they are essentially trapped in and there is no option to exit. Unfortunately then you have natural and man made disasters that come into play. Sediment run off during heavy rains, flooding or as in this case rapid temperature drops. It is said that larger fish struggle more to regulate their body temperatures than smaller fish. This can result in an inability to source food, lethargy, exhaustion and ultimately death. They may instinctively head to a warmer water area, but if its coming from an area that a fish cannot get too, it means that fish is potentially in trouble as you saw in the video. The other side of that grate is the canal system to the Nerang River. They were stuck at this point and they all passed away in the same area of the lake.

Sad to see this for sure. Being resourceful and all they would make good burley bait and fertilizer, at the price bait is these days you'll get a years supply for nothing.

Its a shame to see big GT dead like that, Im trying to understand what went wrong? How come those GT couldnt leave the canals and head back to sea where the water temperature would be warmer and more stable temperature wise ? Secondly the water looks like its had lots of fresh water wash in after heavy rains , its full of sediments and thats enough to affect the fish. Either way there are natural events and fish kills all the time , as long as its not detrimental to the species its not an issue. In nature the individual is not important but the species is !

@@CoastfishTV Thanks for clearing that up mate I had no idea that they enter as juveniles and have no reason to move on because of food availability and become trapped as they mature. Still a tragic loss on some solid sport fish , would be great fun hooking up to 15 -- 20kg GT'S from the bank.

@@cornpop..9921 I from NSW mate and had no idea how they got there and why they couldn't move out to sea. Would have been shitloads of fun fishing for them before the buggers went belly up.

These big fish are found from the north to the south of the Gold Coast in most significant lakes. This place is well known for them and has been televised in the paper, on every GC social media page and on all the local major news TV channels for years. It's no secret. The real trick in this particular lake is actually getting one remotely interested in your bait, and it doesn't happen often enough for anyone to be alarmed. All my fish come from other lakes. These fish have seen it all.

Definitely u don’t get it mate. I’ve been fishing for long time. Long enough to see many spots getting destroyed by some people catch and keep any size fish. Your social media will destroy the spot for good. And are a lot people still don’t know about the spot. I meet some people and then said they just found out about the spot because they saw your videos.
