if anyone is confused about the timeline, it’s currently after a few months of reynold accusing her, so by now all they see her as is a unruly child. the duke is exactly how i viewed him, still grieving over yvonne but trying to be the best as he can.
in the society of the nobles, it is expected for a noble to be behaved and never running their mouth because it will cause some rumors and possibly stain the reputation of their household, so that explains why the duke is often scolding reynold here. not because he cares that much about penelope but because he cares about the eckart family’s reputation.
the manhwa has never mentioned the setting of when pene met the duke, so in my own assumption, i made them meet when penelope was asking for food on the sidewalks, away from the unalive body in the tent or something?
so that’s why he doesn’t know about her drinking rain water next to it.
because derrick is the heir of the duchy rn (because he’s the oldest son.) he has more of an uptight and behaved attitude, especially infront of his father. he possibly thinks that penelope is staining the duchy’s reputation by being yvonne’s replacement and acting out.
i think as a child, reynold must’ve been missing his sister very much and when penelope arrived, he couldn’t just fathom that she was his sister’s supposed to be replacement, gaining himself an instant dislike for penelope.
her wish by the basement attic? only made it worse, because imagine you’re a child and your sister is missing, then some kid barges into your home, claiming the role of your sister then hearing her wish for your sister to never come home again. but still, this doesn’t justify his actions but it explains it.
by now penelope must’ve acted out because of the neglect and abuse. a child cannot function well without proper attention and care, thus causing them to have tantrums to feel heard. mental abuse is when reynold caused her to have a bad reputation with the people within the duchy, causing them to spread rumors about her being a thief and possibly getting mentally abused by the whispers and treatment of the staff in the duchy. a child has the basic instinct to fit in because that’s what they think the right thing is, so if outcasted they might just break.
i made her be meek in this video, because her confidence might be low and she feels like she’s walking on eggshells whenever she’s with the duke, fearing he might throw her out.
