Dear Prudence Guitar Lesson - The Beatles - John Lennon Fingerstyle Guitar Tutorial

In this guitar lesson, I'll show you how to play Dear Prudence by The Beatles, taken from 1968's 'The Beatles' (AKA The White Album). Guitar Pro and PDF tabs are available to all members of my Patreon group (see below).
This is a beautiful acoustic guitar fingerstyle song that I've been meaning to learn for a LONG time.
John Lennon wrote this and plays the acoustic guitar in the original recording, which might explain the rather unorthodox approach to the picking pattern.
It was written for Prudence Farrow, sister of actress Mia, during The Beatle's time in Rishikesh, India studying Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The meditations were said to have made Prudence paranoid and too anxious to leave her chalet. The song describes The Beatles' attempts to coax her out!
We're in Drop D tuning for this one. You can check out my video lesson on tips for Drop D guitar tuning here - • Drop D Guitar Tuning T...
Have a listen to the Vocal, Guitar & Drums version on the 2018 re-release to get a clearer listen to the acoustic parts:

Nice playing with a warm tone and keep the tempo steady. As a guitarist for comic book trailers who's looking for inspiration, your teaching is nice since you clearly model how to use a metronome and using precise fingering while accounting for strings that need to ring open. Cheers!

the picking pattern breakdown (string 5 and one at the same time, and so on etc.) is easily the best explanation of I've seen of this.

The best breakdown of Dear Prudence, explanation of both string and picking patterns. I always thought that this song was done with 2 guitars. John and George.

Apparently Lennon learned the basics of the guitar picking style from Donovan while in India - see kzread.info/dash/bejne/g2eouc2yibvJfMY.html

I play the second chord in the verse keeping a standard D shape and using my pinky to grab the A string.

I do believe this is the finger-picking pattern John learned from Donovan, in the time they spent together in at the Ashram in India.

Very nice ----you follow the chord arpeggio pattern down--well done ! --one fella player 5 th fret A major -----as C major! I corrected him --only to find later on -- he prefers to play the 5 TH fret --A major ---as a C chord ! sounds pretty awful --been playing this for 30 years !
