Never used Deans myself, used Traxxas and Tamiya before. But a while ago switched to mainly XT90. For a different reason. I use XT60 for our drone and still use Tamiya plug for some of my Tamiya RC cars, but will make the switch to XT plugs for those too asap. Even do the XT90 is a little bigger vs XT60, I had a special reason to go for the XT90 over the XT60. Besides the XT plugs are a joy to solder and I like the design better, much better protection. And I can use all my Lipo batteries with almost all of my RC cars. One of the main reason to switch to XT90 for most of my RC cars is this. My kids had a hard time plugging and unplugging the Traxxas connectors. So I did a little test with them. Got myself all kind of different plugs and let them decide which one was the easiest to plug and unplug. So we tried Tamiya, Traxxas, Deans, XT30/XT60/XT90 and some other plugs out there. The struggled with pretty much all of them except the Tamiya and the XT90. Tamiya and Lipos, not a real fit, only use those with NiMH. But they really liked the bigger XT90 as it has more grip for them and needs less force vs something like the Traxxas one. Children do not have the same strength in their hands as adults. So if there is a plug that makes their live easier, that is one to consider. At the moment I did this test my sons where 8, 11 and 13yrs old. But even now 3 years later it still makes sence. So adding everything up, how easy to solder, how easy to use, spark protection, beeing able to handle the current, amps, heat, all that a Lipo system throw at a plug. I want my kids to be able to unplug a battery if needed fast for any reason. The XT60 was a close contenter, but the XT90 was the winner. Sometimes bigger is better. So, XT60 for most is the best choice, but.... a XT90 gives a little bit more grip for small hands.

I couldnt agree more john.... I used Dean's at first and then found better options. I use xt60 on all of my crawlers and 1/10 scale basher rigs and xt150 plugs on my 1/8 scale bashers and x maxx. I find them to hold the current load better and are cleaner and easier to solder. I have never had an xt series connector fail and have been using them for a couple of years now. I find traxxas plugs a bit cheap and harder to solder. Plus they will melt down under serious voltage and load. Good video. I wish you would post more because I get so much info but also know you must be super busy.

Mostly deans on my ESC's (with exception of EC3 on my RTR Vaterra Ascender), but XT60's, EC3's, and various banana plugs on my batteries, which means I have too many adapters to account for. My intention is to eventually move to XT60 on my all ESC's, then transition to XT60's on the remaining batteries. The main exception will be keeping EC3 on my Vaterra Ascender, because I use small 3S 1350mah flight LiPo batteries, which already have EC3 plugs.

I'll change to xt60 too. 2 weeks ago we had a problem with the Deans connectors on a TRX. Out of carelessness, I wanted to put the plug the wrong way. Usually this is not a problem, but this time a spark jumped over and the ESC was immediately broken. I think (or hope) that this will not happen with the XT60. Great video by the way.

I started as a Dean user since that was what my first esc was delivered with but they melted, got deformed and caused glitches that fried the esc, I still have that plug somewhere as a reminder not to use the Deans Since then I use EC5 connectors on my big fast toys although I've been looking at XT90 because I don't really like the feeling of how the EC5 connect, they just don't seem to fit together properly and I have even had one of the bullet connectors pushed out of the housing And my crawlers get XT60 since that's what most use around here, and my planes and boats get XT60 since those are the toys I use to exercise my batteries when they have lived too comfortably for too long in the crawlers :D

XT60 is the general purpose flight connector for smaller quads and plans and what all my old batteries have, 3s and 4s. JST for anything micro, 1s or 2s. My little toy crawler has XT60 and when I finally get a real crawler I'm sure it'll be XT60 as well. My first truck (2wd, 540 powered) had Deans, but my second truck (4wd, 3665 brushless) has iC5 so I've converted the batteries to EC5. 2S Lectron Pro 5200.

I’ve been using Deans. I used to use sermos power poles which I liked a lot but they started being difficult to find. My hobby shop told me Deans were better and could take the kind of power that modern NiMH batteries were putting out, so I started using them. I have to admit I never liked them a ton for all the reasons you pointed out, sure they have a really small footprint so they looked more slick (if you didn’t botch the soldering job) and all the really good drivers were using them but they are a pain to unplug, they spark when you plug them together plus they are a pain to solder. I was thinking of making a switch and your video sold me on the XTs, I’m switching.

I've been DEANS since the 1990's..... But slowly changing to the XT60-90 Plugs. My Arthritis makes it increasingly more difficult to UNPLUG Deans Plugs. Otherwise, I've had no other issues with them. The XT60-90 Plugs just seem to be more easily soldered, and overall, more user-friendly. Carmine

@@HolmesHobbies My experience is quite opposite. I have Ranger battery, that is equipped with XT60, and Hobbywing 1080 ESC, that is equipped with XT60 as well. I.e. I can assume that both connectors are of good enough quality. When I'm detaching battery from ESC, I feel that I will damage my rig inadvertently, because connection is quite stiff. On the other hand, I have Amass Deans (with cups, like XT60+), and connection is perfect - not too stiff and not loose. Stiffness of XT60 is my main complaint. Next one - XT60 is bulkier and angular.

I did hard wire my motors for while then switched back to deans until 2012 when I stopped RC racing because the last local track closed. Fast forward to now and, due retirement, I am getting back into RC. I still have a lot of deans left so I will stick with them for a while.

I bought a Axial Gravedigger last year around November 2017 and I used deans plugs at the time but the contacts on the deans plugs has two parts one keeps the pressure for the electrical contact. in total there are 4 contacts and not long ago i had an issue with the truck I would jump the truck then it would stop. It turned out that one of the 4 contacts broke so the contact was not quality at that point so I went to the hobby shop and ended up with xt60 plugs on my charger and batterys.

I've been using Deans for so long on smaller rigs, but used to use EC5s or XT90 on higher powered brushless stuff. Now I just crawl though, so thinking about moving away from Deans too, don't like soldering them and they do get stiff, sometimes even with grease, if they get too hot and the housing starts to very slightly deform, you've got no chance. Just can't quite face doing all 50 batteries.

I run Micro Dean's in my 1/35 scaler and 3s LiPo/ Brushless Losi 1/24 Truggy. I needed the wattage throughput and small form factor. JSTs weren't gonna do it. Anything bigger, though, XT60/90 are the way to go. But I've noticed their manufacturing tolerances are much wider than true Dean's; some slip in very easy and some are nigh impossible.

I just read all of the comments, and I'm surprised so many find Deans difficult to solder?! I think they're the easiest and fastest of all of the plugs. Maybe it's just becasue I've soldered tens of thousands of the damn things over the last decades. lol XT's are honestly one of my least favorite to deal with. The Castle connector is the biggest headache to solder and deal with out there, for me.

Dean's plugs are fine for me, I have never had a problem. I will use them until they can't be found. I used to use race prep, years ago, the ones with two plates, directly across from each other. I had my battery in my pocket with some change, and a coin shorted between the plates. I started burning a hole in my pants, and had to pull them down quickly, because I couldn't get it out of my pocket. I was not hurt, but I did learn a lesson, and stopped using those plugs.

I like the Traxxas iD plugs. They're ergonomic to the fingers and your battery is not some needlessly obfuscated octopus looking thing with superfluous wires and connectors to accidentally damage with use. I find it interesting that ICE cars all get their particular form of liquid fuel from a rather universal pump handle. Buy an E-car and you need to carry 2 or more costly 'plug' adaptors in your trunk or you can be SOL out on the open road if you need to recharge.

If only you knew 4 years ago that the combination of the words "Dean" and "Plug" would have such significant meaning #ButtPlugDean

Whoa!! The one guy using power poles! I used to use them on my Ebikes, but they arc very badly and end up needing frequent replacement. the XT60 has gotten onto my low power ebikes now too.

I had Powerpoles for a while .... in the 90s. Now I'm trying to decide with a little of everything but I just bought 20 sets of xt60 to get started standardizing.

You wouldn't happen to know where I can get brushless motor rebuild parts. I'm not looking for specific brands because I like running cheap motors just to see how they stack up & well the obvious their cheap. Just looking for a generic motor supply type store.

There are no standards at all. Bearings, rotors, cans, faceplates, they are all rather unique to the motor. Bearings would have the most chance of fitting, but even so, every factory has different tolerances and the shafts are ground to fit that particular bearing vendor (if manufactured properly).
