    I'm a big fan of these electric locos, 85/6/7 90/1. I think they were in their prime during my childhood as i would see loads of them on both passenger and freight duties. They're icons of my childhood.

    Great review Dave. Like the AL5 and 86/87's. I have the twin pantograph 85 and the Heljan 86's in Virgin & Intercity livery. Used to travel from Lime Street to London in the mid 70's with one of these pulling Mk2's. Cheers James.

    I have the AL5 in Electric Blue, great little loco runs well. I like the idea of the wire to hold the Pantograph at the right height Dave.

  • @DeanPark

    @DeanPark

    8 жыл бұрын

    Cheers, yeah its a simple wire that works a treat, as the fully raised pantograph is too tall and a bit unrealistic, as the pantograph would never be that high, when under the wires. Dave

    Heard zero complaints about the 85. Ok so the pan could be tweaked but overall a superb loco from Bachmann. I wish the cab lights and the intrrnal corridor lights were separate functions. Lets hope a Class 81 will follow soon.....another staple of the WCML.in the 70s and 80s.

    Very nice, looks at home on the layout. From the videos I've watched it seemed most 85s were on parcel work by the mid to late 80s with 86s and 87s in charge of the express passenger stuff.

  • @DeanPark

    @DeanPark

    8 жыл бұрын

    Yeah that's pretty much the case, I will have it on parcels when I get around to buying some blue parcel mk1's or some of my M1-MK3A passenger services, but I have seen a video from 1987 when it was pulling MK1 in inter-city livery as per the video, so that was a relief lol. Its my first proper electric, if you discount the Hornby 91!!

    What we need is a new 87!....I would add 2 or 3 to my layout as they were very prominent around Edinburgh and Glasgow in the 1980's into the 1990's on west coast duties.

    DaveClass47 DJM is proposing a new class 86 or 87 via kickstarter. There's a thread about it on rmweb.

  • @DeanPark

    @DeanPark

    8 жыл бұрын

    EverardJunction superb....I will take a look right now. Although DJM hasn't exactly got a track record of delivering within a timescale....Hattons king has been one example. He seems to start a lot of projects but we are still waiting on most of them to come to pass! I was hoping a major manufacturer would come to the fore with an 86 and 87 (discounting Heljan;s 86, which even they seem to have given up on!) Still, very welcome intervention by DJM non the less.

    Hi John, its extremely kind of you to take the time to comment and praise my work...So thank you very much. The loco is a stunning bit of modelling. I am glad I have added it as it now gives me something to run 'under the wires' that actually uses the OHLE! Dave

    +DaveClass47 Hi again Dave I am hoping my modelling will match yours when I get going on the scenery. The rebuild with the Helixes has been somewhat challenging to say the least! Have you had a look at Parkway on RMWeb at all? You will also see what the old Parkway was like on KZread under my friends name Tractorclag. Interesting to note that your favourites are the class 47 locos! I have a good number of this class including 12 47/7s as I loved the livery of those locos. I kind of have split Eras with the 80s so I can run LL class 37s and 47s plus a lot of railfreight stuff. Also have a diverse modern image collection, a lot of which I have re-sprayed myself. I have 12 Colas locos for instance and now awaiting delivery of Rainbow class 66, Harry Beck from LTM and VTEC HST from Locomotion! Keep up the great videos, you do some brilliant stuff and a great reference for myself! By the way, is all your point work and signalling DCC? Regards John

    Hi, thanks for that. DJM ditched their Class 86 idea after he got wind that Hornby were going to announce the 87. I think with the 85 already out, the 8 and 90 on their way he got cold feet. Shame as we need a decent 86. I think the big hole in the AC electric range is a decent class 91. Hopefully Hornby will give us one in 2018/19!! I keep asking Hornby, I hope others can too. Dave

    Good review, its a pity not more up to date models of its stablemates ie AL1 to AL6's Heljan did do a 86 but not in unrefurbished condition I do believe? mk3a loco hauled coaches? oxford? or Jouef (I have 9 for sales 4 1st, 4 2nd 1 Restr buffet lol)

  • @DeanPark

    @DeanPark

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi, oxford will produce the MK3A yes, cant wait! Hornby ones can also double up as a MK3A if you leave the buffers on them, with the latest release from them only having 'inter-city' branding on the side, without the '125' text. So I have them. Yes I agree, we need a new 86 and would dearly love a class 87! Dave

  • @sub39h

    @sub39h

    8 жыл бұрын

    +DaveClass47 The roof, underframe and bogie details aren't correct for the Mk3As. The Mk3s as modelled by Hornby and Lima are only suitable for HST stock really. The only exceptions are the Hornby 4-window buffet car which is a modified Lim tooling. This is a loco hauled Mk3 RFM but Hornby have never done it in a correct livery and instead keep releasing it in HST sets even though they were never used in HSTs before Grand Central converted some loco hauled Mk3s to run with their HSTs. You could use the HST TFOs as a stand in for the Mk3B FO as they have the same roof detail.

  • @DeanPark

    sub39h Hi, yeah but until Oxford release theirs, my MK3A look-alike ones will do ;-)

  • @GregPalmer1000

    @GregPalmer1000

    +sub39h The jouef although not up to modern specs are MK3a and numbered as such, however when these were introduced the only other Mk3's were the Hornby shorties so they were a sub for HST sets before the Lima ones were introduced with the big ugly couplings.

    Nice looking loco and video Dave. With regard to the pantographs, it is a shame that the manufacturers don't do a little more research. They must have known the 85 was in the pipeline and you would have thought they would have done more accurate measurements. Cheers, Bob

  • @DeanPark

    @DeanPark

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi Bob...the masts are actually accurate in height. I have checked it out. Its the pantograph that extends a bit too much. It would work 'ok' wires were there as the pantograph would rest against the wire, but there aint a lot of wires fitted in 00 gauge land! most guys avoid it as it hinders track cleaning etc.

  • @Cliffjumper24

    @Cliffjumper24

    8 жыл бұрын

    +DaveClass47 Just so you know... the reason the pantographs reach so high is because masts are longer for level crossings, so double-decker buses and lorries can go over the crossing safely. It also means buses and lorries don't have to be routed away and be forced to find the nearest bridge over the railway. Here's an illustration of what I mean www.flickr.com/photos/sydpix/5571486989/ Hope that's useful! :^)

    DaveClass47 No problem. That's why comments are useful feedback for you. Something worth mentioning on your next video? :^) Incidentally, you've inspired me to make my own model railway channel.... I'm just making a few buffer videos to get it going, I have an intro planned and a flashy ident that I need to make , but that'll take more effort.

  • @cedarcam

    @cedarcam

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dave Yes that's right The wires are around 16 feet above the rail top. At level crossings they are set around 18 feet high. Although most vehicles would go under the wires with so much voltage in them it would arc across. The extra height is needed to prevent that happening. Also worth noting on Cliffjumpers photo is on this crossing there are no cattle grids. Like you said not all of them do. :)
