I agree with your comments regards naming those who we buy goods from. I'm the same, I make no apologies in naming Gaugemaster, Scoonie Hobbies, Scale Model Scenery, Eagle One Models, PD Marsh models. By telling people where we got our items from, they can go and get their items as well, and it keeps the firms in business. And, as you say, it's good for the hobby!

I agree that you should give praise where praise is due. For many years finding detailing parts for layouts was near impossible or very expensive for what you got with these smaller companies getting into the market it helps to widen the detailing parts available and helps keep costs down, and if the product is good why not spread the word and make them have a more well known identity. I do this or all things in life like with my car I happily have advertising stickers from the places i go for different sorts o work to my car when they have proven themselves to be good at what they do and give great service and doo great work for the price. Especially with small companies this is a simple but effective way to help and support them and to me it is in your own benifit since if you find good people and dont support them they may have a hard time growing and staying in business which then means not only is it a failed local business and then cant employ any locals it means you have to then find someone else that can give as good service.

I agree I like the product refereces, we share the hobby. People like Dean Park show us stuff we like, how often hve we seen something on a layout and said I'd like to have that ! I know some keep their sources privete, that's their right. But more like to know. !!!

I'm glad you tell us the company's that make the products. Be it rolling stock or scenic items. How do people expect to find out about said company's if you just put them on the layout. Remember "the needs of the meny outweigh the needs of the few."👀

Great job Dave on product placements. You've never gone overboard on them and because of watching this video I too now have pigeons on my layout. Not to mention the odd rabbit 😁. The proof of the pudding, as the saying goes, just proves how good you really are, to have perfected your own modular wall building technique and willingly shared it with us others puts the rest of us to shame. Your attention to detail is second to none. I worked for BR and recognise so much of your features, but it looks so much better when trains are seen with crew and passengers. Its those little details that take that extra effort but are just so perfect in execution. Absolutely terrific. I imagine that if i could shrink down to abouttwelve mm in height i would have no problems in travelling around your layout, recognizing so many details. As for product placement, it absolutely makes it, superb choice of fittings👍👍👍

I for one am glad of the info about various products. As someone who lives and works abroad I do not often get to model railway exhibitions and obviously the few model railway shops here in France focus on European stock and the tips and product recommendations I pick up from particularly yourself, Everard Junction and Charlie at Chadwick are invaluable as of course I don't have access to the model railway magazines either. Sadly you can't please everyone all of the time.

The Great Wall of Dean park looks very impressive. I have to agree with you about naming companies you have chosen to use their products on your layout. Without yourself, Everard Junction and other KZread layouts I would not have seen the vast array of items for sale from West Hill Wagon Works, Scale Model Scenery, ModelU and many others suppliers. For me its very important that these suppliers especially those making detail items for our layouts get the exposure

Product placement offers a window on the world of new available products. I welcome the information you dispense and it enhances my ability to discern suitable items that interest me and warrant further investigation or purchase. It is a credit to you Dave that companies recognise your talents in wanting to place their products via yourself in the first place.

Cheers Mike. I don’t understand why he was being so critical. I know of one KZreadr who tries to discredit me, but I can’t be doing with all this childish swipes and saying I’m just product placing.

Wonderful up-date Dave to DPMR with modified lit coaches to add to your rolling stock. The Great Wall of Dean Park is some achievement with many hours of work to complete, but worth the view along the whole section. Plus, you have a neat way to access behind it when needed. The detailing of your layout is superb and great to see how and where you have utilised the items within a scene. The question of Product Placement within a filmed layout is informative and yes naming the products is useful if anyone likes what they see and wish to purchase them for their own cameos and scenic areas. In fact, if you didn't know who produced certain locos, coaches, and wagons etc on a blank set-up that runs over the floor or table-top etc. Surely naming those items is Product Placement too if you mention what it is and where the item is from. If that is a problem, I think the person complaining should give up his/her modeller's hobby. To go and do something less boring (if that is his/her case) instead. Try something like reading a book, cookery, fishing, kitting, or even be a good lazy person (aka a couch-potato) and bin watch a Marvel or Drama series you like, East-Enders, Holly Oaks, Corry St, Doctors, Home and Away etc. Maybe even take up Human Statue mantle by standing feckin' still and say nothing all day for that is all your option is worth. Well, unless someone throws in their loose change to see you Product Place yourself on the street corner. Hey, that is it, you can become a male or female hooker and make a few quid selling yourself.

Great video Dave and I wholeheartedly agree with your stance on letting us know where you get stuff. When I started getting involved a couple of years ago, digging out the old stuff I had, I had got no idea about scenery, buildings etc and it was only by watching your and others videos on KZread that got me started down the road I’m on now. Without you naming companies creating items, where would I be. So thank you for sharing all your ideas with me. Roy.

Nice coaches. Love the lighting. The two brakes thing was commonplace on the Southern region as fixed coach sets were the norm there, usually it was two brakes and a composite, sometimes with a Second in there somewhere too.

Ah, you know people can disagree with me, that’s fine, but there is a way of putting your comments across, I just can’t stay quiet when the comment is unjustified and complete and utter crap! I know of one KZreadr who doesn’t like me, makes swipes at me (without having the courage to name me), but for what?, needless pursuit of being a little insignificant jealous worm?! Who knows. I cannot understand their motivation. They are clearly in this wonderful hobby for the wrong reasons. Engaging with guys like you who enjoy and give constructive feedback is what drives me. Not money, views, subs….I have now realized that this is all irrelevant if you are in this hobby for fun and enjoyment.

Very nice work on the wall. Very detailed explanation installing coach lighting…. I’ll be revisiting that part soon! And my 2 cents on the product placement….. if you didn’t showcase the great detail parts, the rest of us modelers would never know about them. A great undertaking and I'm impressed by the magnet attachment method too. I'm in the process of installing a retaining wall along one side of my layout using plaster cast sections glued in place. It's nowhere near as long as your wall and doesn't have to be removeable as it's at the narrowest part of the layout, and I can easily reach underneath should the need arise. Only cursing and swearing for 10 minutes during the reassembly is good going! Regarding (so called) product placement. I keep a note of the stuff I use, mainly so I can remember it as the years advance!, so if I want more I can remember where I got them. I too have often paused yours, and others, videos to go and explore a manufacturer that's been recommended. I tend to find you chaps aren't fond of wasting your money either, so siad recommendations are helpful. Carry on!

I hope the Backman Passengers get on with the other ones. Some passengers can be very pedantic about where other people sit, especially in the morning commute.

I imagine a Cavalex 56 might find it's way to Dean Park TMD soon !!!! I do though think you need a pair of heritage liveried Sulzer type twos in the shape of a 24/1 and a 26 !!

totally agree with you there Dave on buying from smaller companies, thanks to your channel i found Westhill wagon works .i find the detailing kits to be superb. i always say if people don't like the fact your show casing smaller companies. Then simple don't watch the channel

I watch many youtube channels not only to see other layouts but to pick up tips and see what products are out there that I might want to use - I thought that was one of the points of showing our layouts to others - to share information. As you know I'm down here in Perth, Australia so I rely on clips like yours to see whats happening and what you're recommending for your layout...I'd be totally lost without your recommendations. Keep up your fantastic work Dave! Love the retaining wall idea, that is a wonderful piece of out of the box thinking. Very interesting watching how you installed the internal lighting into your carriages and the tail lamp at the rear of the brake one, that's going to be very useful for your viewers. I cannot believe the criticism you've had for just telling which products you've successfully used yourself and want to share with others for their benefit, sounds very narrow minded - but never mind, just keep on doing the work you do. Many thanks for sharing, another fine and enjoyable video.

Excellent again Dave. The 47.gets a big thumbs up from me, I love em. The 26 with the 4 coaches, reminds me of the loco hauled fife turns, when Haymarket were short of Units. The Great wall looks great and a clever concept too. Shame that someone would leave because of product naming, especially as you say, it's to help them grow and improve product range. The finer details, add to the enjoyment of watching your videos. The parcel brutes were popular with trainspotters up n down the country, as many of us used em to sit on and plonk our bags on too. Maybe, if you have space that could be an idea. Good luck getting the coo'ing sound chip for your pigeons lol. Sorry so long a message but Many thanks for sharing Dave.

The wall looks so awesome. I'm looking at a 4-coach rake for a scottish mk1 rake (got 2 coaches so far), but I'm not specifically looking for scotrail ones. At some point I might dismantle my bachmann mk1s and paint the interiors and add passengers, but I don't think I'll be going so far as to adding lights (and if I do, I'll be using a reed switch as per the hornby lights so the coaches aren't permanently lit when on powered track). I don't even have a heljan 27 for the rake yet, although a 25 or 37 or maybe my railfreight grey lima 26 will do. Also I'd have probably used a 555 timer for the flashing tail lamp, has to be a heck of a lot cheaper than basically a DCC chip.

Your layout and video's are truly extraordinary. If only I had the time (and talent) to do 5% of what you accomplish with skill and quality!

Hi Dave, Excellent update as always and great work on " The Great Wall " some ingenious solutions and I have to say it looks excellent and well done to Justin at SMS too. I enjoyed the coach lighting and it does make a difference I am in the process of lighting my coaches although I am getting someone to do it as I dont trust myself to do it properly !! I must say please keep endorsing the smaller companies as it is only through people showing where they got them from that i have come across some great 3D printed items . I have bought from those who you mentioned and can I add Model Railway Scenes , Pete Gomm has only been going 2 years but produces brilliant items at a good price . He is also happy to take suggestions as I wanted a Spar shop sign and a Jet Garage price totem and within a few days they were available. Cheers Kev

I've just told Richard I have a Bachmann IC livery Mk1 BG coach that has sat in a drawer for years that was only used for a diorama I made years ago. Zero miles! There's a few on eBay going for 20-30 quid now. £50 for a coach is just getting a bit silly. I'd have happily let it go for a fair price just to see it become part of the Dean Park or Everard fleet! Oh well... I might as well make a new shelf for it now! And good riddance to subscribers that call you out on putting the spotlight on smaller manufacturers that are bringing us amazing small detailing products. You're right on the money, Dave. The more attention they get the more customers they get meaning their business grows and they can make more great products! Take care. Mike.

Great video Dave, the retaining walls and coach lighting looks brilliant. Think I suggested it years ago , but when using those old tyres, see if you can get some static grass in the middle of them, also stuck under a bush so they look like they've been there while and will be hard to remove, know from experience how hard they're to get out from long grass and bushes lol. As usual layouts looking great, keep up the good work

Dont forget a bridge rectifier....this enables you to keep the lights on even when the coach is turned around.

Hi Dave I fully agree about naming suppliers to enable use all to enrich our layouts for the better. Coach lighting section was interesting and informative, I am DC so brought battery power supply kits with latching reed switches so with the use of a magnetic moved across the centre of the roof of the coach I can control when there on or off (not sure how long batteries last) is this something that could perhaps be mentioned to other modellers that are still DC, thanks for sharing and please remember to stay safe..

Hmmm. Your pigeons got me thinking. My layout's (imagined) location is only a few miles inland from Lake Michigan. Currently I have an HO scale cat scavenging at the employee outdoor lunch area, but seagulls would also be appropriate. Guess I have some shopping to do. Although as by now you know I am into N Gauge, I always find your videos of great interest. I love the way what you have to say, apart from the stock reviews, is relevant to nearly all gauges. I also very much like all the improvements to the video format, and find it one of the best on the internet...well done Sir!! Dean Park itself just gets better and better and goes to show just how long a good layout takes to build. I agree with promotion of small companies and good product, but it is also good to hear constructive criticism after the research by the poster has been properly carried out. You said we didn't want to hear a middle age man swear. If you think that's bad Dave, try my train shed where this now 70 year old man is forever cursing....arthritis..the curse of the modeller. Very clear explanation of how to fit lighting to a certain manufacturers coach and the flashing tail lamp made by another company. Nah nothing wrong with product placement If it were not for you I would never of found out about finescale figures 3d printed products who I think also make some birds so worth having a look there for seagulls I am sure someone makes them.

The massive amount of work to illuminate carriages really backs up an earlier suggestion of mine where some sort of overall lighting system for the entire loft area has to be pondered Dave! Full flourescent tube (I guess?) vs complete darkness? There's middle grounds and lighting techniques to be explored pal.

Great work, and I enjoy the product announcements - it's not like these are pure advertisements for some products, you are showing what you use to achieve your results. Associated with that, where did you get those LED strips from? I have about 40 coaches (USA style Heavyweight coaches) to add lighting to. Thank for the very informative video.

Excellent video thanks Dave. This has been my first visit in quite a few months and I've watched he'd 2 of your videos today. I agree with the comments about product placement, if you dont say "such and such came from Modelu" etc how are such companies going to survive. I do it all the time on my RMWeb page. Personally I dont like the increased Google adverts, but have got used to them as I now live in Spain - there's adverts everywhere now on-line! Where did you get your lighting bars from? I have made my own in the past, but its very time consuming, so that might be an easier route. Thanks very much, I enjoy my occasional visits! (I model the GWR in the 1930's hence why I dont pop by more often :-) )

How would we know where to obtain products you have used if you did not name the source, cannot understand the comment you mentioned. Glad to see that wall is finished and looking great, worth the time and effort!

Hi Dave, The (Great) Wall looks, well great! Question, are you planning to ballast up to the wall - & if so will this restrict the removal of the wall or are you just going to paint the flooring grey & subtly weather this?

Hi, I’m already ahead of you there. I’ve designed the wall so they can be lifted and tilted to clear any ground cover, Ie ballast, grasses etc. I can lift up to 5-6mm off the baseboard, which will not damage the grasses etc. However I hope not to have to remove them often! I won’t be adding a layer of ballast all the way up to it… I’m working on other options just now. There will be some patchy grass, weeds bushes, etc at points too.

Excellent film as usual. Surprised by the comment re 'product placement'. I have an 0 gauge tinplate railway, so nothing you do or show is likely to be of interest to me in that sense, but I thoroughly enjoy watching and seeing all the things you do and buy. But for those - as you say - who do model 00 gauge, your channel amongst others must be very very useful. Your response seemed measured and reasonable..

Hi, it’s an 3%, 0-4 inches in 8ft I think. It’s a woodland scenics foam one.

First class video as usual. Can I ask, did you need to put "new" wheels on the other bogie? It looks as though you did - would the original wheels have been ok on the non-power pickup bogie?

Hi, yeah they would have been totally fine. Same 14mm diameter. I didn’t have to put them on but used all My dcc concepts ones. I repurposed the old wheels for another couple of coaches to improve their running. So just used the dcc concepts ones for this project.

Really great tutorial. Thinking of doing the same to my coaches but a little concerned about having them on the whole time. I'd thinking of putting a latching reed switch in to enable simple switching? Any thoughts on this? I really like the DCC concepts solution. I may still do both bogies even though it's not really required with the capacitor as you say.

You could have a switch fitted. But led last a long time. Plus they do not generate any heat so are ideal for interiors spaces.

I decided not to light it. But in one of the brake coaches I have lit the toilet at the brake end. So I have varied it.

Great vudeo again. Question rather than a criticism, I notice you don’t use corridor connections. Is there a reason for this? Btw, I fully agree with you naming companies - it allows us all to share your experience. Everard and Chadwick do similarly.

It’s something I’ve never really considered if I’m honest. However, With coaches getting closer and closer couplers there is less and less need for them. My mk1 and mk2 with hunt couplers are only 2 mm at the widest. When the new hornby mk3 come on stream I’ll be adding close couplers and they probably won’t need the corridor connections either.

To find something, use it, extol it's virtues and feature it but NOT mention where someone else can get it for their own use is how a community becomes elitist. Sharing knowledge is the foundation of a community, be it how to make, where to buy or what can be achieved. What I knew about modelling OO was 30 years outdated before I started a new layout, watching Dean Park, Everard Junction and Chadwick along with others have given me everything I need to know and more, and i'm still learning. I'd bet you've picked up more subscribers showing how to use/where to get things than you have lost for for it.

It’s been done in one of them. In the other brake I’ve separately wired the toilet, so it looks like someone is using it, but on the other brake it’s not lit, but the parcels area etc is.

Regarding the mk1 lighting. You said to remove the spring from the wheels on the other bogie. Why not just reinstate the original bachmann wheels. You can then use the dcc concept wheels for another 2 coaches

Haha. Tell me about it. Some strange people out there. Some jealous little ones too. I can’t help it if companies like that I showcase their stuff. I pay for the stuff so I’m entitled to show it off :-)

I don't mind the displays of stuff you've bought. I bought a set of the Hunt APT-P couplers (annoyingly, about a week before the APT-U NEM sockets were made available! Shipping to Australia makes buying them separately prohibitively expensive and I don't have a permanent layout that needs detailing) and fitted them to my APT which finally arrived last week. They're night and day compared to the factory Hornby ones, those are truly terrible. And not to mention, the more business, the better shipping prices get! It pains me to see parts I could really use at Peter's Spares (eg, S8313 gears) for a measly £2... plus £28 shipping.

@@DeanPark It's worse on their eBay store, AU$75 shipping for a 20g £2.50 part. Even their competiton is rarely below AU$50. I've had large 4kg+ parcels shipped from Hattons via DHL for only £35! It's true for most of the small retailers, even the shipping on just the Hunt APT-P coupler set was around £12 from memory for Royal Mail Untracked. I justified it since it was going on an AU$475 (plus $175 per expansion grumble grumble) train set.

Great video, as always. I’m sure your product placement guy will be back. Or maybe he’ll find a channel with everything blurred out so you can’t tell what it is.

That's the whole point of the other wheel being insulated...so it won't cause a short, unless the insulated wheels over there work different than insulated wheel here in the states.

It will cause a short if the long end of the spring touches the wheel that’s insulated from the axle. That wheel is still picking up a signal from the track. That’s why I switched the springs around.

I wish to ask u are there is any tips on the base boards and frames for a train layout

I’d recommend 12mm plywood for the main baseboard. I’d brace it underneath every 2ft ish.

The 90 pulling the mark 3’s with a dvt had a brake coach in it, did they ever run like that??? I know there’s some cool footage on KZread of an 86 doing West Coast testings with a hst dvt with mk 1 coaches which you could run now you’ve got the buffered hst!!! Great vid, layout is looking awesome mate

Dave, couldn't you just blur out any products that might be in shot just like some tv programmes do for number plates and company logos. It might give a greater sensation of speed to the running shots if all the rolling stock is blurred out. Blemishes on the new Bachmann 47 or any Hornby products will no longer matter and you'll be able to run out of region or era trains 😂

If you are putting lighting & people in the model, wouldn't it have been better to paint the interior first ? Happy modelling. 😝

Well I kinda thought that too. Lol Plus I don’t ram them down your throat and force you to buy them. Nor have I a list of pointless Amazon affiliates for example, which only serve to give a massive multinational more influence and income. I’m showcasing home grown British business. And I’m proud of that!

PIGEONS!!!

My last 5 consecutive new loco purchases have all had various problems caused by terrible quality control during manufacture. Now, because of their grossly greedy price hike policies I will not be buying any new items at all from either Bachman or Hornby (Unless the retailer has them at a very significant sale price reduction). I strongly urge everyone to boycott buying new to force down prices and save the future of the hobby. I guarantee that the manufacturers will start charging much less if you STOP BUYING. If you continue to pay these ludicrous prices they will continue to increase them! Despite the misplaced deference you pay to these manufactures, please understand that it is actually the consumers who dictate the prices and NOT the manufacturers! STOP BEING MUGGED OFF AND BUYING AT SILLY PRICES! In fact their prices go beyond silly, they are obscene.

I bet the same guy would moan if you didn't mention any of the product names too. You can't win with some people.
