When Dime was playing the Dean's in the 90's the company was done. That's why he was with Washburn. Dean wasn't around to make him guitars. I really think Dean came back because of Dime's popularity.

That's it exactly. They made *excellent* guitars. There is ZERO doubt that they would never have become as popular as they are without Dime though. ZZ Top, The Cars, and Sammy Hagar all used Dean guitars in the 80's. We saw them in videos and at concerts. I never once asked "Whoa! What guitar is THAT?! until I heard Pantera and saw Dime using one.

And he was playing Deans simply because he liked the look and he had won a few of them in guitar contests as a kid. In interviews he explained that he used to look for Deans in pawn shops when he was on the road. He was signed on to endorse the brand when he was already famous.

@@johnsguitarmusicanddemos didn't they do a firebird as well? It's ridiculous for Gibson to try to hang on to these shapes for/after this amount of time. It comes across as a company panicking that the 'little guys' have caught up, and can produce the same quality for less. Over time it becomes harder to justify the RRP on the Gibson name alone, when there's no tangible difference in the build quality or craftsmanship.

I used to be one of those guys....then I got to the point in my career that I could afford to play Tier 1 guitars and I can tell you first hand the "just as good as" crowd just don't know what they're talking about. Let's be real: the miracle will just be the acquisition of Dean and everything connected to it by some brand or another, maybe even just some far Eastern oem company we have never heard of, and sell midpriced versions of the old Dean models made in far east. Kinda like BC Rich. We live in a world where guitar making is more about the marketing than about the actual building (since most of the guitars are all built in the same 5 or 6 OEM factories), so no well established guitar brand like Dean is ever going to just go away completely, when it can be bought to market guitars that otherwise would stay under the radar.

Over the course of a long career, 3 times I had the experience of working for both the father who started the company followed by their sons who inherited the business. In each case, the sons underperformed and/or failed in the business. While the sons were intelligent and for the most part hard working, they lacked an essential quality exhibited by their fathers. Namely, they thought they were "entitled" to success whereas their fathers had to earn it through being real "people persons". This sense of entitlement filtered through everything they did and frankly turned off many employees dragging the company down.

There's one aspect that I feel was left out: the overall quality of the guitars themselves. The only models I've had my hands on that didn't feel cheap, unwieldy, or need massive setups out of the box were 1) the several-thousand dollar custom-shop models or 2) some of the Rusty Cooley models. As someone who works in a music store, I'm constantly asked about what are good guitars for their respective prices. And because I always want to avoid returns, I'll point them to ESPs, Jacksons, or Schecters if they want the more extreme body styles. This has been going on long before the change in management at Dean. And I think that, similar to Gibson ironically, Dean was far too comfortable with relying on the brand-recognition and let far too many things slide when it came to general quality control.

Sample size of one, but I recently picked up a Custom 550FR lefty that retailed for $1,200-1,500 based on what I could find, and it's great. No QC problems, the floyd holds tune, feels like a solid instrument. I can't speak to out of the box setup of course because it was used, but it's exactly what I'd expect from a higher-end-but-not-signature-or-custom-shop guitar.

Hey Max, I purchased one of the newer Dean models at the beginning of August, specifically the Kerry King signature import model. I purchased it specifically because it was 24 fret, had a Kahler instead of a Floyd, and came in a hard case. I absolutely love mine! It's built like an absolute tank, feels excellent (close to my ESP E-IIs or Ormsby Metal X in terms of build quality), not a single fit/finish imperfection, and decent specs. A local shop to me is also a Dean dealer, and they have a good selection of the upper end import models to try out. All of the ones I've put hands on (around 4-5 total) have been excellent so long as it is an Indonesian or Korean import model. From my experience having bought/played a lot of guitars this year, higher end LTDs (1000/Black Metal/Signature Series) feels pretty similar build quality-wise, whereas Jackson Pro-series models of commiserate prices tend to have more fit/finish problems, just as a reference point.

I bought one of the import Dimebag signatures last year. I picked it up for the novelty, but was surprised. It was the only Floyd in its price range in tune, feels high quality, was set up (meaning Dean did it because we all know Guitar Center doesn't care), the frets were flawless, and had the Seymour Duncan Dime pickup for $800. Dean has a video explaining how they quality check and setup their import guitars in the US. After this experience, I believe it, and a simple setup really shows when comparing to other imports.

My take on what he said confirmed what you said about the problem being with the new management. People he "Trusted" leaving, and not having the productive interaction that existed with the previous owner. On the lawsuits, I honestly hope Dean wins the Gibson Lawsuit. Not the one with Dime. My personal observation is, the new management may not be as Guitar / Music oriented, maybe more about "Bottom-Line," and that is never a good driving process. I'm no expert, but it seems to me a guitar company has to be "Music / Musician Oriented," not Bottom Line Oriented, to be successful, especially in today's market. I have two Dean Guitars. I have a Michael Amott signature Bloodstorm V guitar. It's not a USA custom but it is a set neck higher end model. Very lightweight for as big a guitar it is. The unusual shape of the ends of the V make it easy to prop up against my leg and play standing up (hard to explain). Great playing and sounding guitar. The only drawbacks for me is the placement of the output jack (have to use a right angle jack plug or wear a guitar strap) when playing sitting down and I had to buy locking tuners because the guitar didn't come with them. The other Dean I own is a Rusty Cooley signature 8 string. It's actually a bolt-on neck but despite that upper fret access is incredible. Literally nothing gets in your way as Rusty used to say. Aside from switching out the bridge pickup getting locking tuners will be the only mods I make to it. Overall great guitars for the money. At the moment I'm trying to buy another Dean 79V guitar if I can get the guy to come down on his price just a little more. I have one of the first Dean Razorback Explosion imports (some refer as the burnt crotch version as they changed the graphics slightly the next year). I never really cared for the pickups. However what I will say that I love about that guitar is the neck shape. I think they call it a V neck shape. For me personally it is just the most comfortable neck I have played. I would play my jackson, BC Rich, Schecter guitars and the necks were just never as comfortable as the Dean neck. I have also played a few other Dean guitars with that V neck shape and they were just as comfortable to play as well. I would love to have that neck shape and feel on all of my guitars.

Didn't Gibson lose an identical lawsuit against Dean about the Flying V shape in England a couple years ago? I think I remember the judge in that case saying that Gibson had taken way too long to sue. I believe Dean had been making the flying V shape for 30? years by the time Gibson decided to sue. Does anyone else remember that case?

My only negative comment would be the pickups mainly because I'm used to Mick Thomson Blackouts I have in my other "Metal" guitars. He went back in the house to use the bathroom and when he returned back to his garage, his guitar was gone. He soon bought another guitar. I have a 2006 Dean dime o flame, that I still own to this day. It is my number one, the body is heavy, the tone is massive and aggressive. As for the quality of the modern models, I can’t say the same. I bought Dean from hell in august from guitar center. The neck had a crack behind the neck nut placement, rough frets, and a 3 way switch that was constantly going out. I immediately returned the guitar center. Opted out for a Dean rust Razorback from guitar center. When I got the guitar, the finish had dents in the clear coat finish, a crack in the neck extending from the 15th and 17th fret, the 3 way switch was also going absolutely dead on the bridge pickup. I returned it as well and got my cash back. So no more deans for me. Despite wanting to get a final dime guitar before this contract is completely run dry. But life goes on. Hopefully maybe, possibly, we can see a new Washburn dime model in the future!

Still love the guitar, it's a keeper. It's seems obvious though while people like Paul R Smith, Bob Taylor are deeply involved in sustainability projects, designing & pioneering the guitar craft etc.... Dean unfortunately seems in it for the money only. Plus mostly pigeon holed focus on one genre of music too. Doesn't seem sincere or the best way to grow a brand. I tried several Dean models when Skunk Baxter from The Doobie Brothers was using them during the '80s. To me, they felt extremely lightweight, and poorly built. The excessive polyurethane finish made them look and feel almost like plastic. The sound wasn't half bad. Truth be told, Dean painted themselves into a small corner of the market with their pointy guitars and jumbo frets. There are simply too many other manufacturers doing it much better than Dean guitars is at the moment. Best of luck to them in court, but I can't imagine how they've lasted this long.

Okay, I have some perspective to offer. I resided in the Tampa Bay area and was a regular patron to Thoroughbred Music in the late '80's early '90's before Sam Ash bought them out. At a consumer level, I was familiar with Elliot and his influence on the music community. I was impressed with his track record that included ownership of Dean guitars, a brand I never owned product offerings from but took notice of frequently. I wasn't in a position to buy signature offerings at that time. I was purchasing what I could afford as a struggling musician trying to ROCK climb in Florida. Long story short, the Captain at the helm needs to show respect to a brand that his father built and possibly consider selling the brand to Gibson who is better qualified in sustaining and growing the DEAN brand (they resurrected KRAMER for example). He could remain as a member of the board but has clearly demonstrated he is not capable of steering the DEAN brand in a direction his father intended. Painful, but honest. Had to speak out. Exactly! The name will be picked up and milked. The Kramer name is now owned by Gibson and they sell some real cheap guitars under that name. It used to be a respected brand. It happens with many manufactured goods.

@@daniellarson3068 I agree! Actually, the new Kramer Nightswan isn't bad, though. Not up to the old USA standards but not too far off. My biggest bitch is that they do the typical Gibson thing and don't bother to set them up for Sh!t and even the frets need work, so you have to spend even more after you get one to get it sorted correctly. Just raise the price a little and set it up decently, it will pay off in the end. I've had cheap guitars (Mitchell HD400, thanks for the tip Max!) that was setup almost perfect out of the box. yes, I had to tweak it just a tad to my preference but I didn't have to have any fretwork done.

They look great on the wall and serve as my little tribute to Dimebag. The ones I own now and the others I've sold are the better of the Dean guitars that I've played but are still far from a top-notch instrument. After the way the little Evan female dog has acted, I'll never buy another Dean from them. Hell, I might remove the dean logo from the ones I have.

As usual, very insightful video! The demise of DEAN and other of their ilk is more a microcosm of the industry at large - consolidation is the trend. Just look at the stable of brands truly under Fender’s ownership!! Dean may survive, but likely in name only; it’s only a matter of time before they are gobbled up by an investment firm

Awesome video!!! This sucks pretty bad and it seems to happen a lot to really great companies! I own 2 of their guitars, the MD24 which I customize with Fishman KSE pickups, Futone upgrades. I also own the stealth V with EMG’s. I love my guitars. After working at jackson\evh\charvel for over 14 years I know quality and these guitars are badass. Anyways, I hope they recover. Pretty ironic as I just bought a Gibson goldtop which kills with the bareknuck Abraxas pickups which kills! And they are at war with each other. Anyways, great video and thank you for the insight on what’s happening! Cheers!!!!!!

I honestly have no stake at all in Dean's fate, but it's nice to see someone discussing news and *actually* trying to be (I feel sorta slimy even using this phrase) "fair and balanced." Oh! Random thought: please de-blur the titles of the books (and old comics?) in the background! As a Book Guy, I always look to see what people are reading (or at least have on their shelves).
