    So sorry to hear of Indy's passing! We have had dogs all our lives, so we both identify with your heartfelt loss. Many thanks for allowing us all to have the privilege of sharing this deep emotional time! Bless you both for being so real with us, it helps all of us realize that this is ok to have these feelings and loss. I hope we can share a lil smile of how we have come to deal with each of our special babies loss when the time comes. The first thing we did was create a legacy tale of our Sami, the A.B.C . She didn't " pass", she simply went out to hollywood to continue her shpw biz career. This has allowed us to continue talking about her as just being away doing her actig career, and any dog that slightly resembles her is actually Sami with makeup on. ;-) The other way we deal with our missing the previous pups is to refer to "the Book". This is a diary of tips, rules, and general advice from all former dogs being passed on to "the new guy" so as to give them the behind the scenes look at how to handle certain situations. This is done in dog voices of the passed on pups.it gets hysterically funny and allows us to remember the well loved pet. I hope these two hints give you the peace and laughter to remember your lovely friend. Blessings & hugs!

    I really love when bri said, “the amount of pain you feel is the amount of love you felt” I’ve never heard that before and it is so true. When I was a child I had really bad anxiety so my parents adopted a German shepherd mix puppy for me and she was so loving and calm and it was the opposite of who I was she was exactly what I needed. She helped me stay grounded and she gave me company when I was alone. She would always follow me around the house and it made me feel special. I remember when she passed away I couldn’t believe it I cried for so long even now just writing about it makes me tear up. Dogs are a mans best friend. Sorry for your loss.

    I’m so sry for the loss of your better half! It never gets easier but being around others ppls dogs makes it bearable! I’m a pet sitter and with out some of my long term clients doggies, I would be just crazy! I lost my male ESS Service dog 2 yrs ago at 15, due to a hereditary illness! Then his sister that was 16 yrs old just this last February jumped off the porch and landed all four legs out straight😭🐕‍🦺 I have owned 3 springers and taught them all to be awesome service dogs! Ppl don’t realize the depression I am feeling even 7 months since I had to put my girl down! Ive watched u guys for the last year or so since realizing how difficult it is going to be to train my new service dog puppy or young adult without one that was already there! Inertia is so smart makes me want a border collie! Lol. Would they make a good all around service dog?

    The blanket statement by the AVSAB shows they are clearly not based solely in science. All studies on the subject of R+ only vs aversive training are clear and upfront about their limitations as they should be. The most striking limitation to me is the commonly excluded subset of dogs with serious behavioral problems like aggression (dog-dog or dog-other). Therefore, it is difficult to extend such a blanket statement to this subset of behavioral problems when they are not well studied. For instance, is it more harmful to a dog’s mental well-being to live with such a stressful, toxic mindset for months (or years in bad cases, or for life if you think some dogs just cannot be fixed, i.e. Victoria Stilwell) waiting for R+ only techniques to work (if you think they will)? Or is it better for the long-term health of the dog to experience “aversive” measures and fix the behavior in a few days/weeks (see many many examples by Tom Davis, Cesar Milan, Beckman, etc. for success stories)? I don’t 100% know the answer but NEITHER DOES THE AVSAB. Their cop-out is to include the phrase “management” which is not realistic in many circumstances. You cannot always control your environment and it is certainly not healthy to completely isolate your dog. Therefore, it is clear to me that the AVSAB is not issuing this statement based solely in science, but rather with an agenda. Additionally, I think it is important in science to first take clues from nature. If you have ever observed a mother dog with her puppies, you will see that physical corrections are a natural part of learning and decreasing unwanted behaviors. This is a centuries-long study that humans have conducted since they began domesticating dogs.

  • @DaveDEF82

    @DaveDEF82

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DL-hx2xq Yeah, and no mother dog EVER spammed as many corrections in a short amount of time as any balance trainer does every training session. Also mother dogs encourage their puppies to play and reward with food when coming back when foraging for food while leaving the litter in their 'cave'.

  • @DL-hx2xq

    @DL-hx2xq

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DaveDEF82 Balanced trainers use mostly R+ (hence the name balanced). There is very little “spamming corrections” as you put it, but if you did not cherry-pick my comment you would realize this. I will put it as simply as this: bad, unwanted behavior = (mild) correction; good, desired behavior = reward. It is very often that immediately following a correction, the dog is rewarded since it stops the unwanted behavior in that moment. It however seems to be in vogue to completely ignore this fact lol. People like to pretend that balanced means you are constantly jerking on your dogs neck, which is just totally not true.

  • @DaveDEF82

    @DaveDEF82

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DL-hx2xq Or maybe I did not cherry pick but just chose the obvious EDIT: naturalistic fallacy (before I said appeal to nature fallacy) in it because I largely agreed with most of your points? Hence the "Yeah," at the start of my comment. I can even link you to a review that clearly lists the shortcomings of a lot of studies in this field: DOI: 10.1016/j.applanim.2017.07.001 But that mother dog stuff is just a flawed argument. Just because it is natural it is not ethical and the position of AVSAB is based on ethics otherwise it wouldn't even be a discussion. Just because it is natural it does not need to be applied. No one argues that aversives do not work. It is about the risks of using them and the question whether they are really necessary. The beauty about science is that at some point balanced training might be hailed as the method to choose while strictly setting the boundaries of it. We do not know. Right now the consensus leans towards reward-based training.

We raised him from the age of 8 weeks, but he had love enough for our whole house four ASD children and us grown ups. He was retired from “work” at 8. He lived ten years and one month and passed of metastatic pancreatic cancer. The only good thing I can say about that is that he didn’t suffer. He was happy and healthy for his whole life. Losing him, even though he had reached the average lifespan for his breed, was almost like losing a limb. And that it happen in the midst of all the social calamity of 2020 made his loss so much worse for our family. Anyway, all that to say my heart goes out to you as well as to Zak and Bree

    I am so sorry. I can't even imagine making a video so public about losing my boy and I lost him 12/31/2020. I've been following your channel/your training since I got him in 2013, he was only 8.5 years old when I lost him very suddenly to cancer. When he passed he knew well over 60 commands and we had only gone to one very very basic 6 week training course when I first brought him home. Everything else we learned through your videos & books. He lit up whenever I'd pick up the clicker. You're right people don't respond to grief over a dog they same they do with human family members, people don't get it that even though there is another dog in the house now THAT one was special and I will miss him forever. How special it is that you recorded so many moments together and got to take her on a special trip to Alaska!!! I hope time helps heal your heart ❤

    my 18 year old dog died june 11 this year. we adopted him when i was in first grade and died a few weeks before i graduated law school. it's literally the most painful thing i've experienced and adapting to the loss of our furry life companions is the hardest part, but knowing we gave them all the love and care they deserve until their very last breath makes it sting a little less. much love to both of you.

    Aww, I am so sorry for the loss of Indy. It is never easy losing a pet. I always try to frame it this way. Our pets will never be forgotten, but with their loss comes the opportunity to foster a new life, a new connection and be a stable, comforting, and supportive home for another pet. Regarding raw food. I love love love, the K9 Cravings food. They are a raw food that meets AFFCO's standards. I combine that with Answer's Raw Goat's milk and my dogs have improved so much. Our senior dog no longer has GI problems, or gas. His gum and coat health has also improved. My family and I made the switch when our picky eater Velma came into our world. She wouldn't eat kibble, or dehydrated food with any level of reliability. So I started looking at other food options and working with my Vet. Raw food isn't for every dog, or for ever owner's pocket book but I am happy with the decision that we made.

I’m 52 now Bree and I still tear up thinking of my first girl. Your so right in that the level of grief is proportionate to level of love. I hope Indie is running through the fields with my Emmy Lou on the other side of the rainbow bridge ❤️

    I’m so sorry to hear of Indy. Losing a beloved dog, is so difficult to go through. It’s like losing a human parent, grandparent, child, brother or sister. Indy lived a great, wonderful, full life with both of you. I often think the reason they don’t live decades like we do, is because they give their entire selves to us, completely unselfishly. Cried over my first personal dog loss again today. I let her go in 2019 when it became apparent that her body was really starting to fail her (she was in her mid-teens). It’s gotten easier, and I’m so grateful for my current dog - who adored her big sister - for helping me grieve. It’s still not a wound that’s healed, but I know she knew she was so loved from the very moment I got her and that’s all that matters now. Thanks for being so honest about your experience, reading the comments I’m resonating with so many people who are also clearly resonating with you.

    So sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a companion of many years is never easy. I am actually also looking for advice for my own dog. She is a 2.5 year old black lab mix. I adopted her when she was 11 months and she is so sweet and playful. Your videos were definitely helpful for her initial training when she came to us. Over this past summer, she has become increasingly traumatized by fireworks, an anxiety that has spread to any number of loud sudden noises from our neighborhood. Typically she will hide under something in our condo (desk, bed, coffee table) until a little while after the noise has stopped. The largest issue we've discovered is that she is now afraid of going outside when it's dark, regardless of whether or not she has heard a noise and regardless of where we are. Even if we do get her outside, which is sometimes very difficult, most of the time she will walk a little bit and then freeze. She will only move freely if we are headed back home. This is a new development this past summer, and I just worry about her having to wait going to the bathroom, and just that anxiety that she feels about the dark. Any tips that I can try to ease her fears and make it easier for her to go outside in the dark?? Thanks!

    Oh no, when I saw the video thumbnail all I could think was “Not Indy…” I feel so sad to hear this. Sending all the love to Zak and Bree. You guys gave Indy a wonderful life. In regards to suggestions, I would like to see some videos about training small reactive dogs. Chihuahuas get a bad name for being “yappy”. I personally have a miniature poodle who is reactive and quite picky (not as food motivated). I know other people want to see this too. Thank you guys for all the hard work you do.

Take time to grieve and then smile.....what a wonderful life she had, all because of you. I adore your you tube channel and you inspired me to stop my old dig training ways and adopt your method. This led to me finding Absolute Dogs (I'm from England and they are based in Devon). Thank you so much.....you put so much of yourselves onto your channel. Love you both and your beliefs.

    "bear dog" and acceptable biting is one of the best things I learned from you -- my Henry went from biting me all the time (he was a lifelong street dog and herding mix who was EXTREMELY mouthy) to gently grabbing my pointer finger and tugging gently while rolling around, and gently chomping on my hand and wrists. Completely different from when he plays with toys, it's just our thing, and a natural dynamic that helped us bond. Thank you for encouraging me not to be scared away from that natural behavior. My chewy boy Henry was my first dog after our 13.5 year old passed, so thank you for helping us navigate our mourning in conjunction with new love and bonding. Hopefully we can all provide you with some of that same love and support!

    I'm so sorry about indi! That pain is so hard. Zak you saved my sanity when I got a standard poodle pup. The first dog I have had in 30 years. I feel like God placed you in my path. I let everyone I can know about you especially the owners at the dog park who have coercion collars on their dogs. I doubt any of them will ever listen, but I try. Thank you so much. You invited my passion for dog training and made it possible to learn bit by bit. I now have a happy 9 month old pup who is happy and eager to learn. Please keep do this it is a Godsend.

    Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this video. I just lost my dad the beginning of this month, and my current German Shepherd dog, Bailey, was originally his dog. I adopted her a year and a half ago when my dad became sick with cancer. She has been such a gift. When my dad lost his last dog, Bella, it took him a long time before he could talk about it. He told me that it was harder to lose his dog than either of his parents. The love for a pet is so uncomplicated and pure, and they are dependent on us for nearly everything, so they become a part of us. I think the loss of a pet is one of the hardest losses to bear. I am a physician and I have witnessed the deep grief of loss of a pet in many of my patients. Acknowledging the depth of that loss is very important to the healing process. And as a physician… THANK YOU Zak and Brie for defending science! Science is the practice of eliminating bias and confounders in order to discover the truth. Conclusions can rarely be made from one individual study because NO single study can be perfectly designed and executed. Rather each study is hypothesis generating. That is why the investigators and their peers go to lengths to review the data and discover potential flaws in the study design and we do more studies. The more we study a subject, the more certain we are that we have come to an accurate conclusion. The fact that people continue to trust anecdotal evidence over science, continue to trust politicians over scientists, is unbelievable to me. Science is the ONE source of information we can trust, because the whole point of science is to eliminate human bias and manipulation. So…. THANK YOU! You guys are the greatest. Bailey thanks you too, because since I started watching your channel, you have made our time together more joyful an fun! P.S. My dad and I used to watch your channel together when Bailey and I would go over to visit him. I thought I was introducing the channel to him, but he told me that he had been watching you long before I found you. He was a psychologist and was all about positive reinforcement training. He was the best! I love you Dad! 🤗 ❤️ Brie and Zak, I am sending you a big hug. We must remember…. “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
