Most sea urchins don't survive any exposure to air since they can't get it out of their system. Which is also why they are usually packed without any Air in the bag.

I found this guy washed up on the beach so I think any damage had been done before I got to him, so I'm absolving myself of any culpability in the death of the featured urchin. That is helpful advice for next time though, I'll make sure I don't expose my freelance urchins to air before adding them to the tank.
