Dealing with Criticism | Survival Advice for Tattooists | That Tattoo Show | 135

Handling criticism is always tough. Learn to embrace it as an opportunity for growth.
Listen attentively to feedback, separate constructive criticism from personal attacks, and maintain an open mind. Reflect on the validity of the feedback, but don't let it define your self-worth or creative vision. Respond with grace and humility, thanking those who offer valuable insights and using criticism as a tool to refine your skills and art.
Ultimately, trust your own instincts and remember that art is subjective - not everyone will connect with your work, and that's perfectly normal.
Stay true to your artistic journey.

The best part of doing black and grey is putting the lightest grey, trusting it and getting that plum reddish skin..and knowing, that the shading will be light but well saturated and heal well

Joe is a legend in the tattoo industry, he knows exactly what he’s speaking about and feel it may be the soft hearted that take things like what he said to offence somehow. End if the day if you don’t like people speaking the truth and in NO way whatsoever badmouthing other artist’s then don’t watch!! Don’t watch don’t listen and don’t comment if you don’t like it!! Bring back the days I’d tattooing and tattooist being the true nature of not given a shit!! Great show as always

Thanks for another great show on a very important subject for anyone in creative industry. You both offered some great advice on how to deal with it. Myself I suppose I came from a fine art background and that World is full of criticism from people who aren't very technically adept 😅 but again it is not necessarily a world which rewards technical ability, so glad am I to find the world of tattoo art does! Like most people I used to let those comments get to me, especially when overheard in person if you are exhibiting for example. I could get 100 amazing compliments but would remember the one overheard negative opinion. But it just takes time, and years to get through it. At some point I just stopped caring about those opinions and only really paid attention to criticism when it was constructive and given by a peer group, and other people you look up to whose opinions you trust and are generally validated with a genuine why, and a way to improve it. Having a peer group like that was a big turning point mentally for me, I felt much better about what I was producing and had much clearer means to improve. Luckily I have had that kind of group in tattooing from a very early point who are all greatly supportive throughout my apprenticeship.

I personally believe that as long as we are our worst critics, it don’t really matter what others say. You should be honest with yourselves and not surround yourself with sycophants, thus protecting yourself with honesty. In other words fuck em you know when somethings not right with your work.

Merci! Awesome video ! Its so very true that people are biased. They look at their work and they see it as perfection because its what suits their ego but they will seek out every flaw in other's so to ram them down in order to elevate their own. The reel is what made me watch the whole interview because i agreed with what Jo said in it and it made sense. He's right! These days its all about the self and the uniqueness and the me myself I'm good look at me. Before it was work hard to do the job as its supposed to be done and the more you're good the more it all looks standard and identical. Like a BigMac all made the same and that's why you go to McDonald's because every McDonald's supposed to be the same. (Now I'm hungry)

Joe’s interview had an effect on our shop here in US. We played it on the speakers during work. The bit about Anime caused a huge argument. Spite of which, a guy who doesn’t watch anime took on a client. To prove a point. Do you personally believe you need to be fanatic to pull of a style?

I’ve just seen this barber post of Paul’s tattoo, unfortunately this is my impression of what tattooist are like behind each other backs. If you haven’t got anything constructive to say then don’t say it at all. They are just jealous their not sponsored and being show cased on a huge platform.

Honestly the Internet has just made things better for people that are waiting to be offended and upset, they get a kick out of it and obviously media companies cater to that. How many people stop and try to see things from someone elses viewpoint (or original intention) before getting upset?
