As a minority muslim, all my life through school, NS & working life I've only experienced kindness & consideration from my friends, neighbours & colleagues from other races. Only exception is from my superiors from a certain neighbouring country, but even so it's too insignificant & all's forgiven. Racism is not intrinsic to human nature, but fostered by external influences

Glad to hear it, I believe at heart the majority of people are kind, compassionate & loving & for those that aren't(bad day..lol) it is not worth allowing them to control & manipulate us into relinquishing our joy & happiness in life. People being discriminatory based on religion isn't an expression of racism. Racism is simply prejudiced based of skin pigmentation, i.e. judging people based on an immutable trait, religion is mutable.

in Singapore, racism is still very common and obvious in a lot of places in Singapore. the Chinese people in Singapore get more benefits and are 'placed first' or prioritized as compared to minority races and tribes like the malays and indians.

This is probably the first video made in Singapore on the subject of racism. It has been a taboo. I lived in Singapore for 17 years, and I was shocked by the rampant and open racism on display in Singapore. I even see want ads in newspapers that say something like "only Chinese Singaporeans need apply." Chinese Singaporeans treat brown people worse than they treat certain farm animals. They have derogatory terms like pinoys, Bangalos,..... to describe those brown people they deem inferior.

In a professional work setting, there are certain things that you don’t talk about. You might be overlooked for promotion, salary increase or even fired because of your casual remarks. Set boundaries. If what someone (family, friends, relatives, colleagues or bosses) does is uncomfortable to you, let them know. Your colleagues and bosses are not your friends.

4:35 Can we really call that racism, though? Historically, the police force had more Indians and Sikhs in the very old colonial and early independence days so parents then would use that term to identify a policeman to their children instead of trying to explain to a child who a policeman is and what they do. It was easier, faster, and kids then wouldn't even understand if parents tried the explanation route. The less educated or less aware now would just use what they learnt from their parents without actually having any ill intent towards the race of the person.

Let me put it this way. If you can on your own handle such unintentional or casual "racism" with the person(s) concerned, that'd be much better instead of running straight to the HR if it's not a recalcitrant case. Going straight to complain to HR might have the opposite effect of you being ostracized from the group. So you either decides complain and be given the cold shoulders later on, or talk to them first, or decide that you are fine not being part of the lunch group, go solo. I'm Chinese and I find the group which I joined for lunch (all Chinese), I either have not much in common with the topics they talk about during lunch, or not much "chemistry", so I chose not to join them as often in subsequent lunches. Anyway, racism does not just exist between different races, there's also what I call intra-racism. AS long as there' are races and there are different ethnicities within on race, there will be some form of racism or "ethnic-ism". Sometimes you just learn to live and let live, so long as it doesn't become physical violence, like in the case of the Chinese guy kicking the Indian auntie as reported during covid times or people in the West attacking Asians. Another eg HDB has always discriminated against Single vs Family who buy units. Singles are at the end of the pecking order. Singles also contribute to government taxes, prob even more than an entire family. So as long as there's differences whether be it race, ethnicity, social status, marital status, people will always associate something with something. You can discuss till the cow comes down from the tree and little will change. This is the same in any country, in some cases it's even worse, overt racism like in the USA and even parts of Europe, and then the caste system still very much a thing in India. My ex-boss is Indian Singaporean but he told me he felt offended when a company boss from India ask what caste he belongs to?

Singapore has a population of over 1 million residents in 1965 . Residents vote for self governance in 1959, proceed to a republic after a separation from the federation of Malaysia . Today the Republic of Singapore has grown to 6 million residents of which there are approximately 1.5 million foreign nationals living and working at any given time since 2020. COVID and loss of freedoms on the Island have come under attack from locals and foreigners. Importing foreign workers has caused tensions between locals and their foreign workers.

Let me describe a scenario and the "experts" please tell me how to not to fall into the "hole". So let's say there's a group of security guards working at a residential development and I'm trying to tell a new resident which one to go to for his particular issue. All the guards wear the same uniform, are Malay and well-built except for one guy who's more rounded than well-built, and Indian. Since the resident is new, he doesn't know any of their names. So I tell him to go look for Siva, and he'll probably ask me which one is Siva. Logical question, right? How do I describe Siva to him without mentioning his race, or his build? I'm either going to be called a racist, or be body-shaming Siva. And what if the new resident approaches one of the other guards and asks for Siva, and that guard tells him, "Oh, Siva is the Indian one, the one got more stomach than muscle one." Is that Malay guard now being racist or body-shaming his colleague? Don't be ridiculous. To determine whether one's remarks are racist or not, context is king. And from the beginning of this video, it seems to me that the non-Chinese panelists are very quick to label anything and any situation where a person's race is mentioned as being racist. Only 7 minutes into this video and I'm already feeling such a strong sense of that based on what they've said so far. A bit too sensitive maybe?

I am an expat living in Singapore. I fell for all the government propaganda and before moving assumed that Singapore was a racially harmonious and diverse country given all of the different cultures in the country. Now having lived here, I have learned it is the opposite. In fact the country is incredibly racially segregated. Most Singaporeans of a particular ethnicity don't have a single friend that is of a different ethnicity, this is especially true for older generations. And worst most Singaporeans I have talked to don't see any issue with that, that you can live in a country as diverse (at least on paper) as Singapore but not know anyone who doesn't come from your exact background unless you only know them involuntarily like working at the same place. Sure maybe for example a Chinese Singaporean may like eating roti prata for breakfast every morning, but just consuming food from another culture is a very shallow form of interacting with a different culture in my opinion. That same person probably doesn't have a single person in their life that is from the culture of the food they enjoy so much. The interesting thing is the government is extremely cosmopolitan at least in its policies and messaging and wants the cultures to intermingle and mix. The government doesn't enforce this segregation top down. The segregation is bottom-up in the choices of who to include in their social circle that Singaporeans make in their lives each day.

Based on Dr Mathews definition of casual racism, anything and everything that anyone says that mentions a person's race/ethnicity is casual racism. He's trying to move people to the idea of non-ethnic specific identification just like non-gender specific identification. So if we follow those lines, not only do all of us now need to use pronouns for our gender, we also need to invent new ones for our race. I think he's studied too much. Becos one cares n look at race that's why u think this n that as racism.

Singaporeans are very racist. They love Europeans (whites only), Americans (Taylor Swift and other blue-eyed blondes) and Japanese, and disdain Blacks, Chinese, Koreans and brown people like pinoys, Indians and Banglas (Bangladeshis). Many many Singaporean landlords would find excuses not to rent to those in the latter groups, but would cut rent to entice those in the former group to rent from them. It is truly disgusting and amusing at the same time. In front of white people, they are all smiles and drool. they would love to marry them too, including Jamie Yeo, who even had plastic surgery to look like a white girl.
