Dealing with ART BLOCK & BURNOUT , SELFCARE to the MAX! Pushing through creative blocks isn't easy

I have really been pushing through artist block and also suffering from burnout mainly due to lack of sleep, but, I am pushing through and have had some small success with my artwork. Even though I have really felt the resistance associated with creative block I reminded myself of the Picasso quote; 'Inspiration is real but it has to find you working.' So, I forged on regardless putting as many self-care strategies in place as I possibly could and am even having a break from coffee! Whaaat!!
Thanks so much for watching and all the lovely comments and connections & for being part of this caring and inspiring little corner of KZread.
Love & big soft virtual hugs, Wendy Xx

Dear one, being invited to witness your journey and accompany you is a huge gift to us. Your brave hearted vulnerability allows us to see how really beautiful someone is when they're being authentic. And sharing you journey is hugely comforting to the rest of us, trying to find our ways too. We're in unmapped territory these days, and the comfort we can offer, and find with each other is priceless. You're truly a gift to us, and we cherish you for it.

My husband is in the hospital tonight, and they don’t allow visitors past 9 pm. I’m home now trying to go to sleep. I’m going to breathe in love, and breathe out fear. Tomorrow when they open to visitors again, I’m going to bring my sketchbook along, it calms me.

Dearest Wendy! We are all feverishly waiting for your videos - don't be harsh on yourself because we all love what you do and how you talk about it and take us with you on exploring nature and the world around you! Exhaustion or a burnout can actually keep you from sleeping and after a while you are too tired to sleep which leads to more exhaustion and anxiety etc. Don't try to go through it by force. You will do enough. Give yourself permission for the time you need and try to sleep long and well enough. I am sure Inspiration will come straight back to your beautiful mind as soon as you feel more rested! Why not take a week off and take long walks every day or do Yoga or take photographs on your walks or just don't... Just to see or do something different. This might help you more than all the single days with the bad feelings of needing to be productive on the very next day. Sorry if I sound like a hundred years old and full of myself 🙄😳😱. I'm about your age and I just had to take three weeks off because I couldn't face it anymore after trying to will myself through the exhaustion for many months. The third week really made the difference for me. Maybe one week will be enough for you. I know there might also be some financial anxiety but it will not help you in the long run if you can't get rid of this. I for now am really enjoying work again - for the first since Christmas and: I have enough energy to do the fun creative stuff in the evening But I don't know you though I'm sure you'll figure it out. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and send warm soft hugs from Germany!

It's been a hard year, as it has for so many of us. Hi, Wendy! For my creative practice, I have to fill the cup, by either watching other art inspiration/technique videos or journal ideas, and also, by going on an outing. Going on a drive, or when able to, getting into quietness and nature. I’m especially drawn to water and a day or a few hours spent near a babbling brook or the seashore restores my soul like nothing else. At other times, just being quiet and getting to bed early, turning on my “wave” machine, is the kindest thing I can do for myself. I too have some loved ones that require extra support and that can cause extra worry. This just paralyzes me. So I do what I can to show them I care, but I also set limits on how much brain space I allow my angst to take up. I give their dilemmas and needs to a higher power and build hope that their situation will improve and not all the help has to come from me. Much love to you and yours! ~Lisa from Texas

Hi! This is the first of your videos I'm watchin and I want to thank You for sharing both your ups and downs ❤️ I've sufferd from all of the conditions You mentioned. One of my favorit techniqes for braking an artist or writers block is to write morning pages the way Julia Cameron suggests. Three pages continous writing every morning for at least 90 days. And to plan and do "artist dates" with my self once a week, doing things that make me happy. I gave up caffein three years ago while recovering from fatigue/burnout for the second time. It made all the different in the world by redusing almost all of my often physical anxiety symotoms related to when the cortisol levels changed after a stressfull period. I wish You all the best in your recovery and I will absolutly watch more of your videos! ❤️✨

I have been thinking of you all weekend. I was fortunate to have had 2 whole days to myself in the bedudio and feverishly went at it, in effect spending the whole time warming up! Last weekend I tried, but couldn’t get past picking up a pencil. For me I’ve realised that the peri-menopause is having a huge affect on my ability to focus and find enough clarity of thought to engage in a project. I’m ok with that as I am learning so much from all of my art journaling. Sometimes my bouts of low mood and energy render me utterly incapable of being creative and I end battling the ‘chimp’ and resenting my body. When I eventually emerge, I try to practise gratitude for the all the other amazing stuff it does. But the reality is time is precious especially when you are a hobby artist. I guess what I am saying is... when you hit your stride you will be able to look back and see the value in what you are achieving now. When we are in the maze, it is hard to see where the hell it is leading us. Hoping this week you have lightness and good energy 😊

The universal energy has been changing rapidly this year and many of us are feeling exactly as you are, defeated at times, tired, anxious, uncertain or feeling as if we are not getting enough done. I try to take the cues I am given, if I get energy things get done, if not, then that is OK too. The days of quiet or just sitting and reading do as much for me as the days when I accomplish household or work tasks. Each day is a lesson.

I rarely sleep past 04.30 sometimes I manage to drift off and sleep until 05.00 but this time of year as soon as it’s light I’m wide awake. I’m 60 now and have got used to this lack of sleep. I get up and shower, have a cup of turmeric tea and sit in my art room. Sometimes I paint or doodle sometimes I’ll follow an online art class. I find drawing mandalas as a space to create is a good way for me to feel free to paint. This was taught to me by Galia Alena 🙏🏻🎨🖌currently my daughter and granddaughter are living with me so my usual routine is on hold 😄life is full of bumps all a new experience. Cherish the good moments and also the not so good, they teach us to dig deep within. Your videos have helped me with my art block and just watching you paint stirs creativity. When you leaned right back in your chair you matched the painting on your wall. That was so lovely to see the connected you in life and in your painting. I like the brighter pink in the peony. I love the full, over the top peony blossoms so petally that they can hardly keep their heads up. I do the breathing you describe too because I have suffered from PTSD and sometimes still get a bit anxious. When I wake in the night I do 478 breathing, in through the nose to the count of 4. Hold for 7 the out through the mouth with a sigh to the count of 8. Do this 3 times. It slow the heart rate and sleep usually follows. If not I get up for awhile and doodle , have a cup of hot chocolate and sometimes I meditate. Einstein didn't sleep longer than 2 hours at a time. He said "you cannot solve the problem at the level of the problem" . This is such an important statement because the more we try to deal with the problem the more energy we put into it. Energy goes toward what holds our attention. Transcendence will take us out of the field of the problem. I hope you begin to bloom with the Summer Wendy. Also artists block is another one. I don’t know what’s going on 🤷‍♀️. I mostly try to eat healthy, however I won’t give up my one maybe two coffees a day ☕️ lol. Love you loads and big soft hugs back to you pretty lady. Stay safe Lea x

Wendy, I don't know if sharing your ups and downs helps you, but it absolutely helps me. I don't feel so alone in this roller coaster world, so thank you for that. I am in love with your 2 favorites too, and am so glad you toned the greens down. I do think it helped. The brighter greens wanted to compete with the flower, I think, and they should simply compliment it, as they now do. Brilliantly done! If you can't sleep, at least rest. I am adopting your mantra!

Just give your art a hug. I got over block by giving up and saying, every day this art wants its life. Every day but 1since mid Sept 2020 I have made something. Most days I have workd on multiple paintings. Can always paint over or chop up paper for other things, but I have found the release much better than the fear of bad art that was making the stifling blockage in the first place. Fear no Art. I really try to not care what I make, just make something. ust make something, it will be fine, there's no judge.

Even with your burnout and lack of sleep and the many things that you need to do you still manage to put out this video for us which I appreciate so much. Last week I was feeling run down, tired and my legs ached and throbbed so much it felt like I was dragging them when I walked. It wasn't until the third day of feeling like that I realised that going onto decaf. (only for 3-4 days} was the culprit. I only ever had 2, sometimes 3 cups of non-decaf. coffee in a morning. As soon as I realised why I felt like this I made one of my usual cups of coffee and my symptoms started to abate as I sat there drinking it. Couldn't believe it made a difference so quickly. Suppose I would have come out the other side eventually! Lots of hugs Wendy. Hope you feel better soon. See you next week

I often have aches, pains, and some emotional stuff that makes sleep elusive....enter the miracle of magnesium glycinate.....oh MAN! its does the opposite of calcium in your muscle fibers, (calcium con tracts them, magnesium relaxes them, we are generally short of magnesium...). It works a charm. Once my muscle fibers start to lengthen and soften, my brain follows suit. Once I'm asleep, its a long deep restful one. I always know when I've neglected to take it...helps with my post partum depressipn as well. Not a cure all, but Lord, what a great help. Love your videos! Going w out coffee is. ROUGH. Thank you for sharing your journey again, Wendy ❤ I'm sure many of the people who follow you, like me, will have watched this video and sat nodding in agreement with you. I certainly have! This past year has brough out a lot of emotions and things that we've had to navigate and work through. This is especially true of sensitive creative types. Its been difficult, hasn't it? For me, it feels like there's some kind of metamorphosis going on, a shedding of old habits and ways of seeing things. I'm sure its all going to result in a breakthrough that will be amazing, but letting go can be scary! I gave up coffee too and it really messed with my sleep and energy levels for a while as my body withdrew from caffeine, so take heart that a lot of what you are experiencing could be due to just that. My creativity has been all over the place as well, just like you, so I totally resonate with everything you have talked about. I'm trying to take a step back and see the bigger picture and I have developed a feeling of trust that this is all part of the process of change and growth. Sending love, hugs and blessings xx

I just feel scrambled. I've been working on ideas so long in my head, and trying to learn the technical parts of what I will be attempting. But I feel there is so much "stuff" in the world, that I can't convince myself that the planet needs more from me. I picture my sisters trying to empty out my house after I'm gone. All the supplies for different crafts I've taken up, then abandoned, and all the finished work that I'm glad I made, but it's just here in the house. I feel stupid to make more that will just have to be disposed of. I have no advice for anybody.

A complete change of style which I like heaps better! Turns out even lockdown can have a silver lining, you just have to try and think positive and don't give up. Think of it as recycling what you already have and that may help, good luck!

Argus, you are most worthy. Watercolour and journaling takes up less space than say large canvases, but be mindful to not make yourself small or not produce at all. Take a photo of each work, and then you can decide what to do with it. My mum gave up her art, due to a lot of end product, and it is a bit sad that she has. Sometimes it is how we store, sell or hang our work. If it makes us sad to look at it or sad to let it go. We can give it away to special people. So an artiste' keeps creating. It is just your thing. ;)

  • @EmilyKariya

    @EmilyKariya

Make it anyway, make any art or craft you want to, knowing it is temporary and one day will be gone. Everything goes to dust in the end, and maybe the end product isn't as important as the way you feel when you are doing it. I always feel like I could dispose easily of anything I make, give it all away for free quite happily, because the value is in the creation and not in the having/keeping. My advice would be to let go of the end result, and focus on the joy in the moment of creation xxxxxxxxx

People always think there not as good as someone else but you don't know how many pineapples they have done or scrapt. I love the part you said about breathing in and out. I am going to have to write that down so I will be watch this again as I paint. I do that a lot with your videos because your the one that inspired me to start my own little art studio. Hi Wendy, I went through burnout last year and still have episodes of it till now. Worked my butt of at my last job. Decided to give that job up because I did not find any peace within. Since then I have no job though I am constantly looking for a new one (although I had a contract for a new job but then the third lockdown came in Germany and I didn't get the job). Woke up every night at 3 o'clock in the morning, couldn't get back to sleep for ages. Then tried ashwaganda milk and lavender tea every evening, meditation, yoga and therapie and it helped a lot. Still have shitty days but also very peaceful ones. It is getting better. For you too, I promise.

I'm fighting fatigue and lack of interest in my painting creative time. l lay on the floor in my studio on my yoga. I just know this will pass and accept it. I watch videos everyday to get motivated but only make it to the floor. This is where I am now watching this floor. Looking up at all the unpainted canvases and the paints waiting....laying on the floor.

Hi there and huggs from Rose-Cottage, Schurwald Forest, Germany. I sometimes have those days, when nothing seems to spark my joy, allthough I have many projects going on. It is the same feeling as when you stand in front of your filled closet and think: "Oh my, I have nothing to wear." I find it very helpful in these cases just to sit back and do nothing for a while, meditate, day dream. Or when it comes to the clothes, just to pick out something basic and neutral. In no time, an idea sparks again. It allways works. And when the first idea comes, soon, there will be a domino effect. :-) When it comes to my writing, the Picasso approach was always very helpful to me. :-) When I was writing my novel, there were days, when I just didn`t feel like writing at all. But then I committed myself to writing every day, at least 1 sentence. I told myself, that I could write 1 sentence! And if I would keep on going, in time, my novel would be finished. Guess what: Every time I had written my 1 sentence, I had to write another one and another one. Soon I was in the middle of creating and off with the fairies. :-) When I was done, it felt, like time had stood still and I had been in a vacuum, a special place without time, writing from direct download. Just 1 sentence a day! This can be a beautiful mantra in all cases of life. We can all do 1 thing, but we have to start, do the first step and then keep persisting, moving on. Sometimes we have to sit back and do nothing and relax and meditate and just feel the sun on our nose tips, hear the birds singing and enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. ;-) Blessings, Christina

Short and sweet nowdays-for me( and time). That is definitely something that I have to work on as well, with sleep time. When I sleep early at night, it truly does give me energy and a positive, clear mind. Thanks for sharing on what you do for sleep! 🥰💕💚🧡💛🌺

It’s okay to be ‘off’. I teach yoga and share with my students that balance can be about anything small. Try to let your littlest changes feel okay and good. No judgment. Just know that being creative can be about just sitting with it and thinking free thoughts, and not doing. Just be. 😍🥰🌸🙏🏻
