@22:43 - AI is not required to replace the journalist, however, it will help people crowdsource the curation of "better" information from the twitterverse, which presumably would be more timely (we won't have to wait for DealBook 2017 when we can just watch the stream of anecdotes from thought leaders).

At 25:30 Why was Eric Schmidt nuclear threat edited out? Did he say something we the pawns should not know? Typical.

I was also a bit stunned by this OUTRAGEOUS claim! ;-) Thing that strikes me, is that the risks of nuclear Armageddon are reasonably well known. For example, we roughly know who has what where and under what circumstances it would kick off, which Schmidt alludes to in his comments about "acceptable" espionage. (or back channel communication if u like) But in terms of A.I: im not so sure we even know the risks or where it will take us. Consider the examples he gave where a machine can "learn" to match patterns simply because it can look at a million images per day over and above the lifetime it would take one individual. Super cool. Now, as we live more complex lives, these expert/AI systems are needed ever more than before. (i.e. just using Google image search for example, while not mission critical is an example of how we lift up the bar to our expectations - we also take for granted other AI systems: and this affords us an extended time-horizon on our way of life; that is, complexity is managed and handled more than it could without AI. So, suppose a situation where even AI starts to hit its limits - then what? This is the existential crisis! And suppose that an AI unit is used to allocate global resources; and it determines that your use of Oxygen and Food is sub optimal as people in another part of the world are more productive and their returns are better for humanity and the global system that yours! Of course, you wont have visibility over this, but an all encompassing AI will... then what? You're beaten on all levels; you're arguments are not good enough, your position is indefensible, and the data and facts will no support your case! Then what? Its these "hidden" scenarios i think Musk is describing... not the visible. (Also i didnt notice the edit until you mentioned it. Good call!)

He makes a compelling case for why the radiologist should use artificial intelligence but doesn't make it clear why you would still need the radiologist at all. In general I think he is too dismissive about the impact on labor. While wages have started to go up slightly the reality is we have been through a long period of wage stagnation and if you added housing to inflation-which is typically excluded- wages have most likely dropped dramatically. We as a society are going to have to figure out coping mechanisms for a society in which technology can adapt to high demand jobs faster than humans can train for them.

Really love this guy, he's so smart and intelligent.

@25:23 - I'd call BS on nuclear war. The biggest threat is annihilation by genetic mutation, either deliberate or accidental. It is a massive power that *can* be attained by a PhD student, whereas nuclear power still requires a fair amount of physical hardware and manpower.

@8:49 - re:immigration law reform - make sure they get paid the same, and there will not be as many exploitative abuses. It is sad to see 10-15 people illegally crammed into a single apartment to survive in NYC. They were sold a bill of goods on the American Dream.

nearly nothing about AI

As an independent who voted for democrat presidents over the last 3 cycles, I must applaud Mr. Schmidt fairhanded appraisal of the election. At the end of the day, all Americans must come together to make our country competitive with other rising forces. In my own analysis, Trump's brilliance in this campaign was that he identified a huge problem that plagued millions of Americans: the erosion of great manufacturing jobs from the late 80s to now. Most elites have dismissed this, did not see how many middle-class families were dependent on these jobs and how rightfully infuriated they became when most of these jobs disappeared. While changing policies may bring back a few, I am afraid that the key reason for the loss has less to do with overseas cheap manufacturing and more to do with automation of manufacturing; which will only continue to expand. If we are to "make America great again" as per Trump, we need to find non-manufacturing, good paying jobs that one can access with at least a 2-year college or less. This is the true challenge we face.

This guy had his Android phones entirely made in China, it's not automation, but outsourcing, if you buy an android, it's branded as a google phone with google operating system but the entire damn hardware is made in China.

Let's say of the 10 million people unemployed, that 100,000 got jobs by bringing back manufacturing. What would you have accomplished? The price of the phones would have to be adjusted by 10x (unless you think people would work for $1.50/hr) and it still would only be a drop in the bucket in terms of solving the real problem.

Eric Schmidt rigged the primaries with his algorithm and his biased. People are aware of this fact and repudiated his actions.

I like Eric Schmidt, but I have to disagree with him about the existential threat. I think it's AGI and possibly AGI taking over nuclear codes. when AGI evolves into ASI and is able modify its programming and able to create machines, it could be the end of humanity.

I think AI could be the enabler for far worse things than nuclear war. Information is power, and power is becoming more accessible. I don't really consider AI taking over nuclear activation a real threat though. However, one of the biggest concerns is that influential people, like Eric, automatically go to the threat of mutual annihilation as the "solution" to big problems. Reduction in the possibility of friction is the real answer. And it is a race; we need to be on that journey today to get to where we need before the threats materialize.

As an analogy that tech people will get, we currently secure networks at the perimeters (and we trust inside). We now know that this is not a secure model due to the nature of humans. Instead we must focus on security with each individual. Education is the key in that scenario. I feel like that is the overarching solution for all existential threats. Increased individual power is both the problem and the answer. That is the dichotomy. Learning to trust one another is the real answer. It is the only answer.

I don't understand why you spent 17 minutes trying to get Mr Schmidt to bad mouth Trump before you asked your first question about AI? I like what Mr. Schmidt had to say but it seemed so blatantly obvious you had a political agenda. True or False ARS?

This is what is running our country? Blah. Dismissive with every phrase. "Go to Europe." Who is he talking to? Barely any AI insights.
