DEAKIN UNI DOCTOR OF MEDICINE | HOW TO APPLY | GEMSAS APPLICATIONS | GAMSAT, GPA, BONUSES

Hey everyone! Another back-to-back med school applications video for you today, to make up for last weekend. In this series, I run research and explain the process of applying to each and every graduate entry medical program in Australia as I prepare to apply to schools all around the country for 2023 entry!
In this video, I run through the process of applying to Deakin University's Doctor of Medicine program at their Waurn Ponds campus in Geelong, Victoria.
Deakin is another GEMSAS school, so I'll only be discussing the elements of the process unique to Deakin, in detail here. For more details on the full GEMSAS process, you can check out my UniMelb video from a few weeks back or you can check out the GEMSAS admissions guide
CORRECTION!**
In the video, I mention that they use the 10-year rule for the currency of GPA. They do also have a provision that if your key degree is more than 10 years old, you may still be able to use more recent additional studies to requalify the old GPA

Hey, I'm Jesse, I'm a professional private tutor and founder of Simplified Study Tutoring. Since 2011, I've been helping students take a simpler approach to their studies and educating people in anything from science and maths to English and economics. In March 2021 I sat the GAMSAT and achieved an 84 including a 100 in Section 3. Hopefully, that's credentials enough to give this video a good watchin'.

Hey Jesse! Could you make a video on Notre Dame as well? Your videos actually give me motivation to study the gamsat! It's become like a ritual for me to watch your videos before I start my study for the day haha. Thanks loads and stay safe!

Yep, I have Notre Dame down as the next one after UWA so it should be out 6 Feb! That's so cool to hear that there's a motivational aspect to these! Sounds like you've got a good routine going so keep up that momentum! :)

Hey man. I absolutely appreciate the work you’ve done. Your videos are clear and to the point. The 4% clinical experience - I have done 1 professional year in Australia as a Medical Laboratory Scientist - would that qualify ?

Hi Jesse, thanks for the great video! I've completed a 2 year postgrad degree - master of social work (MSW) which is essentially the equivalent of a 4 year bachelor of social work degree. I think the credit points are the same. Does this mean my 2 year MSW will be enough when gemsas calculates my GPA or will i also need a year from my bachelor degree? To make it 3 years all up.. I hope that made sense. Thanks.

Generally GEMSAS GPAs are calculated based on Full Time Equivalent (FTE) study years so it'd come down to how the study load is treated in relation to whether there are 3 or more FTE years in the Masters Degree. You can use the GPA calculator on the GEMSAS website which might be able to help plan this as it requires you to input the number of credit points per subject. applygemsas.edu.au/gemsas/#/gpa-calc I'd probably say contacting GEMSAS and confirming how this degree will be treated is best if it is non-standard. info@gemsas.edu.au Keep in mind as well that if you are applying to other GEMSAS units, they may treat masters degrees differently to each other in regards to GPA calculation. Hope this helps

For rural, they dont use the RA system anymore, rather the MM system. Where Geelong or MM2 gets 4% and MM3-MM7 get 8%

Can I ask where you found that Geelong gets 4%? I’m doing my undergrad in Melbourne at the moment, but am from Geelong (the suburb is MM1 though). Would appreciate it massively

Hi sania, are you referring to applying to medicine after 12th grade (high school)? The Doctor of Medicine is a graduate program so you would need to complete an undergraduate degree to be eligible to apply. If you are applying as an international student, I'm not familiar with this process, unfortunately.

Also wondering is GPA 7 and GAMSAT 68 without bonus competitive enough to get an interview?

Hey Lexi, I'm no expert on these things so I can't really make any strong prediction. Based on the 2022 data in this spreadsheet from Paging Dr, the average combo score was a 1.70 (non-rural CSP/BMP) for 2022 and there were two offers listed to combo scores of 1.68 (same as yours) after any bonuses had been applied. It's a small sample size in the spreadsheet (about 1/4 of the total intake) and is self reported data. You'd be likely in with a chance for an interview assuming they keep a rough 2:1 ratio on interview to offers but a slightly higher GAMSAT would give you a bit more of a safety net if you don't have access to any of the Deakin bonuses pagingdr.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=9718.0;attach=4212

Hi Jesse, Hi, I have a question regarding the medical school entry bonus. Is there a set limit on how much bonus % you can get? How many % points can I get as a maximum limit?

Hi Max, Deakin states that you can't simultaneously claim both Prior Clinical Experience and Work Experience bonus categories. As per Deakin website: Applicants who claim the Work Experience adjustment (below) are not eligible to apply for this (Prior Clinical experience) adjustment. Applicants who claim the Prior Clinical Experience adjustment (above) are not eligible to apply for this (Work Experience) adjustment. www.deakin.edu.au/course/doctor-medicine

GPA calculation is super complex and I'm not super knowledgable on all the different iterations and variations that exist. It's best to consult the GEMSAS GPA calculation guide. gemsas.edu.au/images/pdf/GEMSAS-Grade-Point-Average-calculations.pdf It includes a GPA conversion table that includes how to convert scores at RMIT onto a 7 point GPA scale (column E)
