The first deaf coffee I ever attended was at a Starbucks. Then, I learned that deaf pizza was at a restaurant just blocks away from there. I felt welcome at these events because Deaf were helpful and kind. I even met someone at a deaf coffee, and we were colleagues years later.

I attended my first Deaf meeting, without knowing many words. The people I met was really nice, helpful with me. Yep, my heart was pumping because I was nervous.

I just subscribed to your youtube channel! I have an autistic brother who I want to communicate with, so I started learning sign language a few years back. But then I stopped. I forgot why. So now, that I have another chance, I’m dedicating my time to learning ASL, thanks to you! :D

I would love to go to a deaf chat but I would feel like I'm butting in where I don't belong.

The ASL school I attend has Deaf teachers and hosts chats for students, so it is mostly for hearing students who are learning but also for Deaf/HOH students who are just now learning ASL and a Deaf teacher to moderate. Hearing people absolutely should not just show up to a Deaf chat in their community unless it states that all are welcome/hearing ASL students welcome.

I like this because I get to learn sign language and just in case, if I see anyone who is deaf, I can talk to him in sign language

I wish you offered your summer classes on different days other than Sundays. Sunday is my church and family day.

Between the TBI, hearing impaired and very weak voice after an injury I really have no choice at this point. The sad part is that almost none of my support people are even willing to try to learn. Not sure how to approach this situation

Learn signs one at a time together, stick with a few core signs, keep it simple, make communication a higher priority than knowing ASL, and it will tend to itself. I have a Deaf coworker and many people know a few signs, even a brand new manager has already picked up a little, so amazing~

What happens if I don't know what a sign means, or I don't know what to sign in response? Is it rude to pull out my phone's notes or a pen and paper?

I’m confused on the sign name. Is that like a nickname the deaf community gives you? Isn’t it just your name finger spelled? Tell me more please.

A deaf or hard of hearing person can give themselves and other hearing people sign names. It is a sign that would mean “you” not everyone with your name. This allows deaf and hard of hearing people to more easily converse about mutual friends and each other when communicating in Sign Language.

Only a deaf person can give me a sign name, and tis rude to ask for one? I might sound a bit childish when I say this, but I don't think that's fair. Tis especially problematic for me because: 1) My hands clearly aren't built for fingerspelling. I even physically can't do the letter R. 2) I am an Ēnglisċ spelling rēform áctivist. I rēalyz ðat langwicg is ālwaiz ċainġing, so locgically, spelling sċood ċainġ alóng wiþ it. 3) How are you going to fingerspell names like "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch"? And yes, that is a real name, tis a town in Wales. 4) Fingerspelling abbreviations like "NASA" is okay, but entire words? No thank you. 5) I am a linguistic purist, sign-languages are no exception. And so fingerspelling, as it sticks out like a sore thumb, goes against my ideals. All in all, I hate fingerspelling, especially ASL fingerspelling, and so all "just fingerspell it" tells me is "There's actually just no sign for it." I'm autistic, so y'all neurotypicals need to adjust to how I like to communicate, or else I won't be able to communicate at all. That's just how my brain works.
