It's been years and it still makes me emotional too, watching this one and the one of his sister. (I'm their dad)

Yeah, i couldn't imagine the shock to suddenly have such new input. But 'in a fear-inspiring way, we are wonderfully made' and he quickly found contentment i'm sure, making his own noises in his environment?! May i never call down evil on another noisy child's toy again!! hahaha... I can't image what his little mind went through when (at that age, for the first real time) he realized just how sound could sound. So cool!!! Thanx for sharing this, guys!!

I received my cochlear implant @ age 64 & it was terrifying!lolol. The sudden noise almost hurts!

Such an honest reaction from this baby. I just cannot imagine how strange the sensation is at first. Then the brain adapts. Wonderful patient calm parents.

He did use hearing aids before this (and still had a hearing aid in the left for a couple years after this), but he didn't get much clarity with them because his hearing was so bad. The cochlear implants are far clearer.

He adapted very quickly. He's 8 now. He's going to a school for the deaf and learning sign language, but he prefers to speak with hearing people. He actually told someone who was trying to sign to him, "Why are you signing? You can talk." 😄 But he has no problem signing to other deaf people.

I think he initally got afraid when he cried. Like he didn't know he was causing the sound that scares him. Maybe?

Oh yeah, for sure. Imagine suddenly gaining a sense. Things would have sounded weird too. People who have gotten implants as adults say that everything robotic or even like clicking at first. As time goes on and the brain adapts, things start sounding normal.

Thank you! He is doing very well with his implants. It's been two and a half years since this video and he has since gotten his other implant (there's another video with that activation, if you haven't seen it already). He's understands us well and is getting better at talking. He'll be starting kindergarten in a mainstream school in September.

It is great what can be achieved with implants. My baby is one year old and he needs them, but in our country (Dominican Republic) they are very expensive, they do not have health insurance coverage and we do not have help. It is a dream for us that she can listen and speak.

Yes, they are expensive. Here in Canada, they are entirely paid for. We pay only for upgrades, if we want them (every 5 years or so). I'm sorry you can't get them right now. 🙁 The best thing you can do right now is learn sign language and teach your son. Even though our kids have cochlear implants, I still regret not learning sign language right away and teaching them, since they went the first year of their life with almost no language. They are both in a school for the deaf now, learning both English and ASL, but their language is still very much behind. Language is so important to the development of the brain. Even if you plan to one day get implants for your son, teach him sign language now. If you like to read, a good book about the importance of language is called Seeing Voices by Oliver Sacks.

@@ZenekandSashasHearing Thank you very much for your recommendations, I will take them into account. We are currently learning sign language, we hope she can imitate them, she already understands some but she does not do them. We have been looking for someone to support us with the implants, but we have not yet achieved it. If it is the will of God we will be able to do it at some point. Thanks

If I was there , I would of gotten his attention with different gentles sounds ., using a small bell , whistling, snapping fingers or knocking . Then things that looks at through out his day , his sister singing to him thats a pretty sound . a toy spinner turning gently, and of course mama and papa's voice with no interference and one at a time .. the handsome little guy needs to understand that everyone hears the way he is hearing now , cause he doesn't known if he likes it or not ... the faster the better for this little guy ...then sometimes babies fear change in routine , not knowing whats ahead for them .. anyway congratulations too all ....

We have been through this three times (this one, then our daughter, then Zenek's second one). We have found that you can't count on a "perfect" activation. All that really matters is that the activation happens. At this age, they adapt so quickly. As you can see at the end of the video, he was totally ok with it by the end of the day.

You see when other young parents read my comment is to help and give them ideas from an old baby scholar...all my life started very young ... I just adore the little people of our world. I mean who do you know that could bring so much joy in one's house. . Hey !! Life goes on with young busy moms and dads and everything is busy around them constantly, it is so easy to stand back and watch and think they could have done better . Remember they have a moment for themselves and think with a relaxed clear mind. ...I truly try to help others when it comes down to babies. . My thoughts were wondering if they need volunteers. . I don't tolerate any bashing of others. .. it's already we good mother's have something in our head that we could second quess ourselves and all we want is to be the best for our children......so honey I'll leave you at that ....blessings to all..?

That was me (his father). He was trying to pull off the processor, which is understandable since he doesn't know what it is.

What you hear isn't what he heard at that moment. The implants are turned on very softly at first. It's just the shock of hearing something he's never heard before.

That may or may not help. From what I've heard from adults who have lost their hearing and gotten cochlear implants, the first day after activation, everything sounds garbled or even like clicking. Then over the following weeks, the brain adjusts and everything starts sounding normal. Zenek loves music now though, for sure.

He's clearly going to be a bad mood child. Some are. Nothing to be done about it.
