deadmau5, Kaskade (Kx5) reflect on their careers, production culture, 'open-format DJs' | 20 Podcast

Музыка

When it comes to dance music, deadmau5 and Kaskade are among the most influential artists in the genre’s history. Despite being in the scene for over two decades, the two artists are as relevant as ever and launched a new group earlier this year, Kx5. On this episode of "The 20 Podcast," DJ Spider connects with mau5 and Kaskade for a rare joint interview, which also features Beatport and Beatsource co-founder Jonas Tempel. The three guests share stories and discuss a range of DJ and production topics, including the best way to learn how to produce, the definition of a bad DJ set, and the industry-wide impact of Kaskade’s first Las Vegas residency.

1:03:20 “learning to learn, not learning to follow” - super good point. It happens all the time that I watch some pretty lukewarm video, but then the guy does something I’ve never seen anyone else do in all the other 5000 videos I’ve seen. It’s generally a good mindset to be open to learn something from anyone.

I think Joel often gets labelled as an asshole and I believe sometimes he might not how to read the room and pander. But, I also think that’s his best quality. He’ll tell you what he thinks no matter how big you are and it’s not for his own ego. He can like the individual and not enjoy the music. He doesn’t allow that to overlap, until the individual takes it personally.

Wished they would have kept going but Joel was the one who actually ended it after sharing his thoughts on society and the example about Elon Musk. I've never seen him become so honest and it seems like it was enough at some point for him.

The dude with the hat is so full of himself. He takes credit for getting deadmau5 and Kaskade together *even when Kaskade himself didn't tell that story, this dude had to jump in and say it anyway). And then says he's also the reason that newer producers put the drop earlier in their songs. That's not why. At all. Our ever shortening attention spans is a main reason the drops started coming super early in songs without a big progressive lead up/intro. That and the fact that electronic music started becoming extremely popular in the US so there started being a LOT more radio edits of songs, thus the drops came much earlier in these versions. And then tracks were being made specifically as pop songs to be played on the radio.

Deadmau5 doesn't get what people mean by "bad set" because, like he said, he's never been a proper DJ. People who come to dance, especially in civilised places like Europe where they're not *drinking f-kcing alcohol* , expect (and need if they're on E) a journey and an experience. This means the DJ matching the energy of the room, then taking it in his hands and leading it. *That* is what makes a good set. And no one gives a sh-t if you produced the track - play the right track, in the right way, at the right time. No, it's not the same as "seeing Coldplay". No, no one cares if you matched the beat perfectly when mixing. I was at a tiny club where Joost Van Bellen's (one of the greatest melodic house DJs I've ever heard) headphones and some other gear died on him and some of his transitions went south a bit - there wasn't a dissatisfied person in the room. Why? We grinned, we laughed, we cried, we rested on the floor, we raved and everything in between. In other words, the set was great. This is what mister "I don't come from an EDM background" doesn't, and will never, get. It's why a lot of his tracks don't work quite right if you're not listening to them on earbuds in a Starbucks eating avocado toast. Not hating on anyone btw, I like both of them on a personal level (especially Joel and his unhinged abrasive sincerity), and they're fantastic producers even if what they produce isn't to my taste. But the above is an objective thing, proper house is a club genre and has to work there first and foremost, which means there are rules and things you have to do a certain way. I'm happy they're getting the bag with streams and "hard ticket" events in stadiums (with f-cking *seats*), but that does not a house set or choon make.
