The amazing part of Thors training is I’ve never/rarely seen him rep to failure yet he improves. Then you see others go till they damn near break down or pass out and don’t improve as much consistently.

I think training for strength you don't have to go to failure to keep getting stronger. Could be wrong.

Andy Bolton didn't train "heavy." he would train a lower percentage until it was easy and move up. So even though he could deadlift 900-1000 lbs, he would train with like 600lbs and do reps. This is a very simplified explanation. But you don't reck your body it can recover quicker, and you can train more often this way.

Training to failure (edit: outside of peaking phases) is the polar opposite of what you want for strength gains.

@@--SPQR-- Depends. You can do a few tops sets a month to failure and you get amazing adaptions from them. But the downside is takes weeks to recover especially for deadlift and in between those max sets you do submaximal sets so yeah most of the time you don't train to failure.

@@BloachismStrengthandFitnesseverything you said is true. However Thor's macrocycle ends with a competition. He'll want to peak two weeks out, right before his massive deload. In the mean time, like you said, it's about ramping up intensity slowly and managing fatigue buildup. He'll stay at very suboptimal percentages until four to three weeks out, where we'll finally see him hit some rpe 9's.

There are naturally strong persons. 300×10 is a huge lift, but a very delicate one with that kind of volume on the deadlift you can earn yourself a welcome ticket to hernialand, no matter how naturally strong you are
