In this video I show you the dead heading of azaleas which you do after flowering and I tell you why it’s important to remove the seeds from the tree.

This really works, I dead headed my azalea after flowering and it’s putting out new leaves like crazy! I see some azaleas growing in peoples gardens and they just leave them at their own device. They look really sad and not healthy at all. They do flower good each year though. But I would like to prune them up haha.

It is in part because these garden plants are likely quite ramified and are in a bit of a status quo in terms of growth. They may not have the space to get much bigger. Or it may be a variety that doesn't grow very well. Once they have too many terminal shoots/buds, they spread their energy very thin. And they produce mostly flowers (and sometimes seeds), never adding much new growth. which is kinda fine if flowers is all you care about.

@@Prometheus4096 you are probably right, but it’s sad to see those azaleas with all the dead flowers still on them and not putting on new growth. But it’s nature I guess, they would grow like this in the wild.

The chicken plucking only removes the petals. Not the ovule. Removing the petals is good, because they can be a source of petal blight spores. And because they block sunlight by sticking to the leaves. Only some varieties set seed when pollinated only by insects. If the variety doesn't set seed pods, you can leave them on and they will shrivel, which will save time. However, some varieties do set seed pods. And then you have to either accept the energy loss, or go back in after the chicken plucking and still remove them 1 by one (or sometimes you can remove 2 in one go). The fastest way is to be early and twist or bend them off. If they set and begin to grow seeds, use the nail of your thumb to get them off. It is faster than using a scissors. You can just pull, but it risk taking leaves just around them with it.

maples are not so easy in a continental climate. air and soil Moisture is very important i placed my trees in pots in a tub with substrate over the summer to keep the moisture constant. you have to remember to check the humidity in both the pot and tub. Protection from too much sun is also very useful, at the same time the trees should not be too dense to prevent fungal infestation. depending on whether they are Japanese, field or mountain maple, they also have different levels of sensitivity. I wish you a lot of joy and success with your trees. Greetings from southern Germany.

@@jonawolf8023 thank you for the info ... yes the climate here in Valais (south of Switzerland) is harsh but in addition I am a beginner ... I potted young trees 3 years ago and this year they really suffered ...brown spots on the leaves of orange dream and parasite eggs on the young thumbs.. .I treated and removed the eggs on the red ones and since then they didn't like it...greetings from Switzerland...Sam

@@rcvalais-ch A home remedy for parasites is to spray the plants with soapy water. when the leaf tips turn brown it is usually too much sun or too little moisture, both problems are easily solved. brown spots in the center of the leaves are usually a sign of fungal infestation. Either chemical agents help, which, in Germany, are not permitted for private individuals, the other possibility is to remove and burn all affected leaves, ensure good air circulation (also between the branches) and check them regularly over the years.

@@rcvalais-ch Valais is interesting, I come from the Alb, there are probably a lot of special features related to bonsai that are similar. short hot and dry summer, risk of frost from September to June, winter up to minus 25 degrees... I would be happy about an exchange. Greetings Jonah.

He made a similar video some time ago. And I did what he said last year and sadly it didn't work out the way it does with Peter. Not many flowers and I have at least 20 azaleas, so it is not a one-time off. One difference my plants are not in pots. He's good, too good for us mortals.

It looked like he cut a few nodes down but said cut just below the seed head? Which is it? Saw more of the cutting than the trimmed seed head. Why didn't he cut seed heads off all the ones he removed the flower from? What was different that only two trees could have the seed heads removed? No explanation, no close up, I feel I have less knowledge than before I watched the video. Seemed like showing off more than informative
