the last time I played Dead of Winter, the dog got night vision goggles, a 1911 pistol, and a rifle and basically carried the colony to survival.

But I thought that you can have only one weapon on your character?
Lol. After all this time, I only realize now that reference pear must’ve had the “burn it down” betrayer goal, where you’ve gotta build barricades and horde fuel. You bastards are all about the detail, and it shows. 10/10.
My first game I got Sparky. Sparky used some gasoline to drive to a location without meeting zombies, but in the way he saw an abandoned church and reflected on religion and what we had become. He decided not to risk taking the consecrated wine because there was a zombie priest that was potentially dangerous. Later he found the lighter, and came back to the safe house infested with zombies. He lit the lighter and asked "do you know why they call me Sparky?". That game was so stupidly funny that I wouldn't have it any other way. The dog taking tough decisions is the best thing that I could ask from a theme that has been overused to exhaustion and I can't take seriously anymore.
This makes me want a Shut Up & Sit Down review of 'This War of Mine' even more
My favorite game of Dead of Winter, the betrayer won...with just the stunt dog (with a gun) as his character. The betrayal story was that he was taking over the camp for his friends, so the idea that the survivors got ran out of camp by a bunch of dogs was especially brilliant.
A screen writer once said that if your film has no laughs in it, it isn't true to life. It could be argued that the elements of the absurd actually make the game more realist.

I love how the Chinese on your door says"saftey for the whole family" for the intro on a post-apocolyptic themed video.

I would argue that the goofy stuff is there because otherwise this would be a horrifying soul-crushing slog. There has to be *some* emotional relief or you’ll break and just stop caring.
Almost every game I've seen you review, I've put on my wishlist. You guys can sell me my own pants.

For insane craziness anytime it was a player's turn each other player would draw a Crossroad card. So there was a chance that we could have 4 Crossroad cards go off in someone's turn. It was the only way we be able to see everything in the game and we've play maybe 20 to 30 different games.

Is...is that Auska on a poster @6:16? Oh man, didn't expect to see NGE here lol.
What they talk about at 5:30 happened to me. My first time playing, my first move, I rolled the bite thing. I was really upset. Luckily, I was playing as the dog (...Sparky?) who treats it as a wound instead. It was crazy. That said, I think I enjoy this game, especially if you play some thematic music, but we've never beaten it. We've played maybe about 8 times or so but have always lost. Maybe there is a small rule we are missing that makes it easier or maybe it is just that difficult. Also, after watching a bit more of the video they talk about Sparky and say he doesn't have any special abilities, and while I did get incredibly lucky, I am willing to admit, yes, he doesn't really have an ability. The others are much more useful. The nice thing about Sparky though is that he only requires a 2 on both searching AND attacking. So he's very good at both actions.

Some of the objectives are absolutely brutal (stockpile), others are really easy, there's one where you just need to kill zombies... So whether you win or lose just depends on which objective you're doing, if you choose it randomly... God luck...
@CaptainCarthex

I remember we tried the one where you just kill zombies (for research?) and we still lost, but that may have been one of our first games.
Is there a reason why you recommend the player elimination variant over the alternative? I feel like player elimination, especially for long games, can be pretty annoying. Why does it make sense for this one?

Last time i played Black beard started the Church of our lord Sparky who became the defacto leader and brutal Despot of the colony known for exicuting those who would not walk him with his rifle.
As I recall, you only keep one of the items when you use noise, so I don’t think your example is correct. My favorite game!!
I have played this game 5 times with friends. We've never won. Mostly cuz the same friend ends up betrayer and stupidly and effectively sabotages us, but forgets his secret agenda.
@JeremyHoffman

I've had this happen so often. It's frustrating when it sort of ruins the game for everyone. TIP FOR INEXPERIENCED BETRAYERS: Focus on selfishly achieving your personal objective. The colony will usually lose morale on its own without your direct sabotage.
I just played that one a few weeks ago with some friends of mine. It was a delightful 5 player game.

Loved the video. I've been following this game for quite a long time now but haven't made the decision whether to get it yet. After watching this I am closer to getting it yet I am not entirely convinced... any piece of advice? thx.

Asuka wallscroll I am complete
Hey guys, I am planning on buying a co-op survival game. But it’s kinda hard to decide which one I should buy. “This War of Mine” or “Dead of Winter” Which one would you guys recommend? Most probably the biggest game changer for us is the speed of the game. One big thing that we hate is that when we have to wait for 30 minutes before next person can make his/her move, just because there are so many things to do. So keeping that in mind which game would you recommend? And when not keeping that in mind, which game would you then recommend? Oh and PS best board game channel!!! You are funny and you are very interesting to watch! Keep up the good work. Greetings from Estonia😉

The opening of this review makes me wonder.... Has SUSD ever considered price fixing a board game by buying up big stock of a fun but unknown game and giving it a bombastic, glowing review?
The game is pretty broken. It's very difficult to just not lose by morale. Completing your secret objective and not losing from morale requires and absurd amount of luck. Even if everyone spends all their resources to not lose by morale there's something like a 50/50 chance you'll manage. The best thing is to be exiled, as I remember it, the exiled objectives are much easier to complete, and gives you a shot at winning.
Oh, how I miss Paul. :-(
I did not like this game... It's another one of those "you work cooperatively to complete a goal, but you're all competing against eachother" so your goal never gets completed... there's really no incentive even to cooperate with the other players, it's easier to just let the colony die and get an alternate win condition... Would not recommend
@Nukestarmaster
4 жыл бұрын
The only way to get an alternative win condition is to be exiled and only one non betrayer character can be exiled.
So, as someone who played DoW to death, I can provide some negative criticism I don't think SUSD provided in this case. 1) I wish the crossroads cards were active more often. Usually, you will go rounds not playing any, because they rely on very, VERY specific things to occur. Sometimes depending on certain characters being in play. That's kind of...boring. Maybe when they do activate you'll feel glad they did, but otherwise, it's kind of meh. 2) The betrayers are hard to play as because you can always track down where items come from. Thus, the game is a little unfair towards them. Minor nitpick frankly. 3) The rules aren't super clear. It took until our 3rd game to realize that if you have a survivor in a location rather than the colony, they don't need food. We also never realized that you play food cards to generate food tokens. We kind of just played them all at the very end of a round to feed ourselves. 4) The game is easily "broken" if everyone plays for themselves. Generate a ton of characters and then you can singlehandedly win any scenario while dominating everyone else. 5) That die is broken as all hell. I played two games where on the first roll a friend of mine had their character die. It's unfair, unfun, and not particularly thematic. Overall, if you like the game, more power to you :) but, I wish it was balanced a bit better and made more like a story telling machine rather than the cold brutal game that it is.
Your kitchen makes me sad.
I'll have to assume that the experience is different when playing with your friends. I've played about 5 games on Tabletop Simulator, all of them boring, some of them massively so. I only stayed because I don't like just leaving in the middle of a co-op game.
