The antithesis to “location, location, location” is “if you build it they will come.” Maybe that is the thinking that led to dead malls. I just discovered this channel and really liked the research. With your female narration it really stands out among the other dead mall channels as malls were such a integral part of American womenhood for many decades.

Thank you @j huang! This mall is definitely the sort of place that you wonder WHY that location was chosen--its far from the highway, it's hidden up on a hill, you can't see it from the main road, etc. I don't know why there arent more women doing this type of video because you're absolutely right, it was THE 20th century destination for us!

Thank you! They definitely don't build them like that anymore...if you compare CIII with a mall that was built in the last 20 years, there's so much more plaster and drywall in the new ones as opposed to concrete and tile. It's sad to think all that craftsmanship might go away.

Another wonderful video! Your videos are supported by very detailed research and you provide a very concise summary of the history of all the malls and their current state of operation. Wow! Five anchor stores! Century III Mall must have been a fabulous place in its heyday. It is great that you managed to slip into the area of the mall they redressed for Netflix series “Mindhunter”. Totally unexpected! Your observation in the wrap-up about the names Century, Tri-County, Eastgate, etc., is spot-on target -- They could bulldoze all these malls tomorrow but the location names will linger on for another hundred years. Without you, no one will know why or where they originated. Thanks guys!

It’s a beautiful mall but so sad...I thought I’d seen desolate at Forest Fair but Century III is another level. A few of us earlier in the day didn’t realize that the Macy’s Furniture wing was a *set* and that it wasn’t just untouched since the 80s until someone better informed explained that to us. You can’t see it in our video but there is a green screen across the front of the top level-the plan must be to digitally add in the rest of the Mall in post production. I’m interested to see it.

Moonbeam specializes in distressing mall properties by leaving them to rot, underutilized and undermaintained. No renovation leads to mass relocation to places where people would rather shop. In the record store, was that the album cover for "Talking Heads: 77" I spied?

I've always called the area "Century 3 mall area" when asked what part of WM . The "south side" of west mifflin . the "Kennywood park area" of the "north side" of West Mifflin I've always used to describe parts of the WM borough. Many folks I know just use the north and south to describe the WM area. The high Schools used to be called north and south high schools. 😉. Yes many folks still use "century 3 mall area" for reference.

@@UniCommProductions The bus issue is quite a complex issue. Our Port Authority used to stretch a lot further than it does now. My then gf (now my wife) took the bus from her house and back every day for 4 years to college. She'd have to travel a couple of miles by car to get to a bus stop now. I attribute the collapse of the bus routes to every driver I saw falsifying customer counts. One person would get on and you'd hear the bus driver enter 5-10 passengers into the fare box (probably stating they had a bus pass). That would happen stop after stop. So obviously the Port Authority thought they had far more revenue than they actually did.

We spent the better part of a weekend there and the area felt more run down than anything (I never felt unsafe and we’re from the suburbs of Cincinnati)...I mean, I can see how some of the stores there weren’t top tier at the end, though

U havta live here to know where not to go. And many of the roads around the mall aren't maintained anymore. I've been watching KZread videos about it the past week because it's been on the news a lot lately. If you went up around Century Square you would see the area is depressed and poorly maintained. I won't go up there anymore and neither do many people I know. There are shootings there and down at the Waterfront in Homestead where the mill Homestead Works used to be. That's where a lot of the slag came from. That waterfront is a shooting gallery and next to a very poor area and lots of section 8 housing.

Also, it’s not a desirable school district. The area of town called Duquesne which is part of the city now sends their kids to the west mifflin schools. Housing prices have dropped. After the announcement was made on the news metal detectors were put in the schools. Many middle class people r leaving to send their kids to better schools. The mayor of west mifflin was also on the news stating moonbeam owes thousands of dollars in taxes to WM. He tried contacting them and received no response and seemed very irritated. I forget his name. That restaurant Old Mexico is now close by on rt 51 but I don’t recommend going there the next time u guys r in town. We got sick the last time we were there. I am actually very saddened to see this mall fall by the wayside. I’ve lived in the south hills suburbs of Pittsburgh my entire life and this mall was a part of my life. My grandparents lived in Pleasant Hills right by it. I remember when I was a kid and nothing was on slag mountain. It looked like giant steps.

I grew up north of Pittsburgh, as I remember I usually referred to that area as South Hills, even though technically it is West Mifflin

It's funny, I saw someone refer to that area as "South Hills" on Reddit yesterday too. Do you think if the mall goes out that some of the businesses around there will change their names (South Hills Chevrolet, maybe?)
