I love the desperation and lack of creativity behind the concept of a claw machine where the prizes are just straight cash.

Lots of fun memories at this place, though I can only point to a time where it felt "alive" being when Jeepers (an entertainment chain, very similar to Chuck-E-Cheese) was one of the main draws. I believe that closed in 2007 or so? Ever since, totally dead. Ahh, my childhood Toys-R-Us. Still the best one I ever got to visit. It has since been turned into an Ollie's discount store (I think sometime in 2018 or so?). JP's Deli was a nice place to go with friends since it was never too busy. Had an excellent hotdog! The Power Gamer store was also a great local spot for vintage games. Bought many N64 titles there. The staff was incredibly friendly and I always made a point to stop in whenever I visited. I believe they moved to another location which I've yet to check out. I can't say I'll miss this mall a ton, but I do miss visiting the stores that have since been long gone.

I'm old enough to remember a lot more going on in this mall and outside of the mall. Starting with the stand alone Montgomery Ward. Inside I remember when Jeepers was an A and P, the Lamp Post in Restaurant, Chess King, an Italian Pizza place, and a large arcade. Part of the arcade was over near Lane Bryant and a store where we used to get B.U.M. Equipment sweatshirts. The rest of the arcade was in the middle of the mall where they had an ear piercing place. I even remember that across from the old book store where Best Buy used to be, they once had a walk through haunted trail. (Before Best Buy) I have a ton of memories from that place. The most important memory is when I purchased Mike Tyson's Punch Out from that Toy's R' Us store. Great video Dan!

I absolutely remember the arcade in the center of the mall! I was just a boy and so small when I seen it and I couldn't even reach the buttons! lol! I am so glad someone else remembers this! I also got pretzels with a side of dipping cheese from a stand with my grandmother.

I love how the lady at the Easter display snatched her coat and threw it behind the counter real quick.. You must be one sketchy looking guy, Dan😉

That one arcade game you mentioned that had DVDs and money in it is a game called Movie Stop. There's a motor that continuously rotates all of the prize slots and in front where the player would be is where there are rows of red lights and 1 row of green lights. The idea is to hit the Stop button at the right time, and it'll go a little bit before stopping. If the row of green lights are lit up when it stops, you win whatever the prize on the bottom of that slot is. There's a prize chute in the back that the winning slot would rotate to and when the winning slot reaches the chute, it will stop and dispense your prize. A channel called Claw Craziness did a video playing it, I would say at least 3 years ago. Movie Stop, from what I understand, has a progressive to where it will skip the row of green lights until however much the owner of the machine set it to, which that technology was taken by none other than slot machines, then winning is solely reliant on timing and skill. There is also a prize sensor to prevent the machine from dispensing more than 1 prize per play. Another thing, that claw machine with the money in it is more than likely set on a progressive as well. The stuffed animal machine you showed, I freaking hate those machines. I noticed there were 2 in that arcade (that poor soul). The claw moves slower than frozen water, the parts for those machines aren't being made anymore, and they're a giant hassle to maintain. The one with the alien bouncy balls is probably the most basic in terms of tech, in other words as long as the claw isn't set ridiculously weak and there are prizes inside, all it takes is a little skill to win. Also the ball claw is often seen at Walmart, Kroger owned stores, Albertsons/Safeway owned stores, and Denny's. The folks who made that machine used to have locations at Kmart and Toys R Us as well. There was 1 in the arcade I didn't really recognize on the right side that I could see best on 2:27. It doesn't look custom and based on how the mall looked then, the owner would be pretty stupid imo to put a custom built claw machine there.

Seeing those in-floor tree boxes with the cage on top reminded me that when I was a kid and I didn't finish my water/was done with it, I'd pour it down into the dirt beneath the cage because I wasn't sure when they were last watered, so I figured I'd help the tree or plant out! Good memories.

The outside of this one, and somewhat the inside, reminds me a lot of McFarland Mall here in Tuscaloosa, AL. It has the stone on the outside by one of the entranceways. It opened in 1969 as well. Unfortunately the interior part of the mall closed several years ago and only has one store open on the outside, Dollar Tree.

I loved hearing “The Valley Road” by Bruce Hornsby & The Range playing on the overhead speakers. Why? I’m basic. Totally what I’d expect to hear in a dying mall.
