“Dead. Everything Here Is Dead” - Alien's Unfilmed Red City Scene

Ойын-сауық

Despite the decades that have passed since its release, and the countless documentaries and explorations of its production, there are still secrets that “Alien” continues to keep its claws firmly entrenched in. Secrets locked away in a vault at 20th Century Studios, or as this article will explore, secrets kept in the personal collections of the people who worked on the film.
One such secret is the mysterious Red City. I expect few of you reading this article will have heard about the Red City. It’s a story element that has until relatively recently remained lost to the annals of time, and the first we ever saw of this mystery city that would have been found on the surface of the planetoid that would later become known as LV-426 was in the concept artwork of Elliot Scott.

I have to think that someone watching Alien for the first time back in the day, before the xeno became a pop culture icon, they probably saw the derelict ship in the fog and thought that was the “alien”, then they saw the space jockey and thought that was the alien. Then they saw the eggs and thought those were the alien. Then the facehugger. Then the chest burster. And then, finally… Unfortunately many of us were robbed of that experience because we watched the film already knowing what to look for. This, by the way, is pretty much the progression I went through watching the original Jeepers Creepers where he goes from being a man in a hat and trench coat to… the Creeper.

I came so close in 1979 but stupidly read the novelisation by Alan Dean Foster before seeing the film. Why??!!

i was around in 79 and was obsessed with this film you are correct the whole look of the film was incredible at that time and because the trailers showed you nothing you didnt know what the alien even looked like even the space jockey could have been the alien and it wouldnt have been disappointing

I watched the movie with a friend when I was 10. I had the same ideas. First the ship was obviously an "ALIEN" ship. Then the navigator...Would he come to life and eat the crew!? Then the pit with the eggs! Would the eggs all hatch simultaneously? Then the egg hatched! Holy crap! Then the facehugger! Oh man, that little guy is going to be hard to catch! Then the full reveal! That movie made me scared of the dark for years.

Thank you for this video, I was fascinated by the concept of the Red City, as mentioned in Rinzler’s Alien tome - this concept would have been intriguing to see on the big screen as I did in that glorious summer of 1979. Again, thank you for the continuing excursions in my favorite franchise.

The "Von Daniken crap" quote and line of though behind it is literally what i said while watching "Prometheus" for the first time. Haha. Very interesting stuff in the video. You do amazing work on AvP Galaxy. Thanks!

Tantalizing to speculate on how much of this Ridley was aware of and potentially drew upon when creating Covenant, given how much of the description you outline here could apply equally well to the ruined Engineer citadel we see there. We know for a fact how much of Giger's designs for the pyramid (and even the Harkonnen stronghold for Dune) were used in Prometheus.

  • @melbsvicaus8163

Would have loved to have seen the Giger Pyramid in all it's biomechanical glory, but understand the budget restrains. In my mind the Derelict attempted to land on top of a subterranean Engineer structure, possibly after the evacuation of LV223, as seen partially in Prometheus, only for the landing to be ruined by the Pilot's birthing of a Xeno. This caused a malfunction of the landing sequence causing the Derelict to crush the landing port atop of the structure. The Xeno was damaged during it's birth leading to it's blood to burn through the Derelict and into the egg chamber below. In the movie the Egg Chamber is far too vast to be within the Derelict and one would have thought that Ridley would have used this as a way of bridging Alien with Prometheus. Oh well, that ship has long sailed. Great post btw.

My idea for an alien tv-series is as follows: It takes place just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship is shipping ore. Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years, when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs. One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen, and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then a war breaks out. All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship. Then they nuke the planet from orbit. Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins. They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship. But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing. Then Weyland-Yutani get's a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there. They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born. Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life. They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life. After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs, they drops them on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die. Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives prolongued life. But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the population out, pursue them and manages to get the elixir back, but gets trapped on the planet where both parties crash. Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life for thousands of years, but they are now trapped on the planet, with no means to get anywhere. But then they see a light aproaching, but is the spaceship friends or foes ? It turns out it is the engineers and after a battle they gets hold off the blue elixir once again, and that gives the cliffhanger for a second season that we must wait several years to see???

I remember some alien structure under the Space Jockey's ship, but seems it was called a pyramid instead of a city. They must have originally envisioned a city which became a pyramid which became just the SJ's ship.
