Seriously, that must be the greatest solo ever written for soprano sax!
My first exposure to this symphony and reference recording was the Air Force Band version. I've heard it so many times and it's interesting to notice small changes for this recording. I'm really enjoying it! And I especially like the soprano sax player's growl sound - a first for me. (And, as a horn player, it takes a lot for me to compliment sax players :) )
Beautiful, in-tune alto clarinet solo!
The hardest part on this movement is the alignment with soprano sax, mallets, and trombone.....along with the triple tonguing for trumpets =)

I got to play this in the Netherlands with Johan in his hometown in ‘92. He was the freaking coolest dude ever. A friend of mine followed him around outside and saved all his cigarette butts.😅

It is double tonguing.
The Heart of Texas Concert Band [San Antonio] will be performing an all de Meij concert on 31 January 2020. Maestro de Meij will be here for the concert and will lead us in some of his compositions. He was the featured composer at the 2012 TMEA, and the HoTBand was the featured band. He led us in playing his "Wind In the Willows". We've played de Meij at least once per season ... and the music is always GREATLY appreciated by the audiences. de Meij is a trombone and euphonium player, so you can always expect that those parts will be great fun for the sections. Ever heard his "T-Bone Concerto"? Shows how much he understands low brass!!

The soprano sax player for our band will henceforth be called "Smeagol", or "Gollum", rather than his real name of Artie!
Band is second to none.
That awesome Soprano Sax Sax solo reminds me of the flute solo in that abstract song "Apollo."
Increíble como suena esta banda!
Patiently awaiting the POMB recording of de Meij's Extreme Make Over and Extreme Beethoven.
I played the xylophone part in my college band. Hearing just the opening still gives me anxiety.
In my opinion, this is the most difficult movement among the 5 movements.

me when they handed out the music and im looking through my trumpet part and im like "did they accidently give me a snare drum page?" when i look at the soli 😭
Here's what I love about THIS performance of the soprano solo: Gollum is not a pretty character. Anyone who's read the books and/or seen the movies knows it. If you use Peter Jackson's interpretation of him, he has no redeeming looks, qualities, and even voice. So to translate that into music, you have to go beyond the parameters of what people in the band world or the saxophone world consider a "characteristic sound," of the soprano saxophone. In short, if you are playing a solo depicting an ugly character, you should play it ugly. That means throwing tone, intonation and reasonable expression or interpretation out the window. You have to go that deep to get the full effect and a lot of players would be fearful and/or balk at the idea of doing that. This player gets it.
Homie at 5:49 fell asleep in the back 😭
1 and 5 best movements
Well done but where is tam-tam at 4:55?!?
