CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Cole Porter (Kevin Kline) rehearses and puts on one of his biggest hits.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The public and private lives of famed songwriter Cole Porter are both explored in this musical drama, in which the aging Porter (played by Kevin Kline) looks back on his life while watching a rehearsal of a stage musical based on his story. As Porter compares notes on the play with director Gabe (Jonathan Pryce), he shares thoughts on his rise to fame in the mid-'20s, writing witty and sophisticated tunes for a string of successful Broadway musicals. Porter seemed to be living a charmed life when he met Linda Thomas (Ashley Judd), a beautiful American woman who, like Porter, was enjoying a sojourn in Paris following the collapse of her first marriage. Thomas is immediately taken with Porter, whose intelligence and charm is a welcome change after her brutal first husband, and the two discover they share a remarkable understanding of one another. Porter and Thomas marry, even though she's aware that her new husband is gay; Thomas is willing to forgive Porter's indiscretions with other men in favor of the emotional support he brings her. However, as the years wear on and the couple takes up residence in Hollywood as Porter begins writing tunes for motion pictures, Thomas finds Porter drifting away from her as his liaisons become more frequent and more serious. Then tragedy enters their life when Porter loses the use of his legs in a riding accident and Thomas is diagnosed with cancer. De-Lovely features a number of noted pop singers interpreting classic songs from Porter's catalog, including Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Elvis Costello, Robbie Williams, Mick Hucknall, and others.

When I first saw this movie about three years ago, I heard the vocal and I was trying to place the voice because I knew it sounded familiar. I was shocked as all hell when I found out it was Alanis. She nailed it! She should seriously try singing in this genre more often. An entire album of standards would be stellar.

Better yet! She could do it as a visual album - Beyonce style, lol. I would buy the DVD or at least Amazon Prime permanent streaming access .... idc, either. This is a stellar idea, and I want to make it happen, now. She looks great, too, why not go all the way? I would love Alanis to bring this style back in for a new generation! Start a petition, I'll sign and share if she agrees!😁

Nice glimpse into Porters lifestyle as well. The rented Venetian palazzo and the piles of Vuitton, the duplex in the Waldorf Towers. Porter lived the life he wrote songs about.

Nice effort on her part but her voice is to modern. Singers wouldn't of sounded like this back then. Robbie Williams was the only singer in the film that pulled of sounding like he was from that time period.

It's been more than a dozen years but on those "making of" featurettes, the producer said that Alanis told him she could sing it "30's style" or modern style. I don't know which one they went with, but from your comment, they probably went with modern, or tried some mix but it didn't combine too well? IDK. anyway, a lot of people do agree that Robbie Williams did the best out of all of the Cole Porter songs.

I liked the film, esp Ashley Judd. It's at least more honest than the earlier film. De-lovely, may not be a great film, it's overly ambitious, a bit clunky at times, but the cast is impressive, production value is inspired and the amazing Cole Porter songs are wonderfully realized, by significant artists. Imho.
