When I was 15 y/o in ‘89 I used to call myself Plug 4. Lol! Damn, these guys gave me life back then…I wasn’t a “hard rock” but just a black nerd that loved the “different style of speak”

It was the right time for a “different style of speak,” Tribe called Quest coming along, Mōney Love, Jungle Brothers, and in the UK Definition of Sound (I wonder if Definition of Sound was a little bit bit later ? I’m gonna look that up. Check out ‘Moira Jean’s Café’ & ‘Wear Your Love Like Heaven’ if you haven’t heard those tracks: they’re great, and totally congruent with early De La (sound-wise) ❤️❤️❤️

Three Feet High and Rising is easily one of the best rap/hip-hop albums of all time. Their choice of things to sample was perfection, and their lyrics are on a a whole other level.
I was 15-year old Scottish kid listening to Jeff Young on Radio 1 when he gave De La Soul their first UK play, and in amongst all the other hip hop trying to go harder and harder, they stood out miles against them. I remember writing their name down (his accent threw me and I wrote it as "Delasol"!), and knew I had to get the album. Its no exaggeration to say that in many, many ways 3ft High And Rising changed my life. One of the best debut albums of all time by ANY artist, and stands with the likes of Paul's Boutique in the impact it had on hip hop and making beats. Still top 5 of my absolute favourite records.

I bought this album in highschool and I couldn't wait to get home and jam it. I wasn't disappointed 😁
My older brother was into De La Soul back when this album came out. And now my 11 year old son likes them because he heard this song at the end of Spider Man No Way Home.

I was only in hard rock and hair bands (don't judge, they were wildly popular in the mid-to-late 80's up until Grunge hit in 1991 or so) when this came out, but it's so good. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to widen out in my musical tastes sooner than I did. 😃

There's just no way to ever hear the original now, and it's scary knowing you basically can't hear it. I think the artist who's sampled should make the call because they recorded it, lol.

Lack of sample clearance. (its the reason why this album and lot of De La's work were not available for streaming). It took them and their management a long time to get their albums available online, but the cut Eddie Murphy line is one of the causalities of that. Either they refused to let them use it, or Eddie Murphy's people wanted way WAY too much money for it.
