There have been a lot of Artists or Icons I looked up to that have passed, as sad as it is, it never compared to what I felt with Dave passing. It's crazy to me that Dave's passing had such an emotional impact on me, even months later. I first thought, "wow, how can I be so down about someone I never met? What's wrong with me? Maybe I'm just in a down mood in general and Dave's passing just triggered those emotions"...Then, once their albums were released on streaming I realized why Dave's passing was so impactful. Yes, I grew up with but De La and their music was the soundtrack to my life - but they had this ability to make me feel like I was part of their inner circle, it felt like I was part of their music. As if I ran into Prince Paul at school and he said, "yo blackstacie, come over to my crib and hang. My friend Dave, Posdnous, Mace, Newkirk, Qtip, LONS, Dres, and others are going to be hanging, making music and smoking". When I arrive it's all open arms, love and goofy. Their music was in invitation to just be vulnerable, be fun, clever, and curious which only leads to an authentic form of creativity. So Dave's passing was really losing a long time good friend - a friend I never met in person but connected with spiritually through good vibes.

Of all the "top MC's" that people rank...I always thought to myself, "Has no one heard De La? TrugoyI?!? Posdnous!?!?" They have to be the greatest hip hop band ever. Along with a few others of course - but De La has to be one of the greatest Hip Hop Groups or Music Groups ever. They never broke up, they kept true to themselves and always challenged themselves.

I think the reason more don't speak of them is twofold: 1) The legal hurdles involved in regaining control of their music. That control would have allowed them to have their music on streaming platforms and kept them as relevant as artists with only a 1/4 of DLS's talent. 2) They pushed positive messages opposed to what nearly every other artist and corporate creation put out for the masses. Sex and violence were instant money makers. Just my opinion, of course.
