So for gamers DDR4 is good enough

Sure, it's awesome especially value wise, but with ddr5 getting cheaper, if going just a bit over budget is not a deal breaker it could make a little difference in the far future.

Microcenter doing the Deal off getting free 32gb of DDR5 memory with a purchase of a ryzen 7700x is the only reason I upgraded to DDR5. DDR4 is still very competent today so noone should consider making the jump to DDR5 unless they just want the best of the best. I upgraded from 16gb of DDR4 (maybe 3000mhz?) and I don't feel a difference.

Well it's correct but you went the Ryzen rout... It's not like you could choose DDR4 anyway

@@techpoint7850 yeah they had a deal between the 7700x and the Intel i7 12700k. I just felt like the AMD side was better value and wanted to upgrade ram anyways so boom. But now that I think about it, I upgraded from the 9600k to this, and my frames have literally more than doubled… I don’t think the 9600k was bottlenecking me that bad, so maybe the upgraded ram has helped out more than I initially gave it credit for

DOUBLED????!! with the same GPU? sounds like something was off, but still it was a 6 core 6 thread CPU, and for some modern games this could make a difference in total performance. ZEN4 is great for a long term upgrade path, while with the intel you could have a single generation, with this platform you can upgrade in 3 years time to a much better CPU if needed, and keep the system as is.

@@techpoint7850 yeah it’s very weird. I had a 1080p monitor and was averaging around 40-60 fps. After the upgrade, I got a 4K monitor and I’m still getting over 100fps.

Obviously if you have already ANY ddr4 ram kits, even the slowest 2133mhz, then you better save up that money and spend on upgrading other pc components. But if you're building it from ground up, then it's better to go with the cheapest ddr5 ram kits available and also very budget ddr5, especially if you're not going for high end cpus such as 13600k and such. Contrary to many youtubers and fake benchmarks that make fuss about ram overclocking, the difference in gaming usually is much less insignificant than we imagine. If performance becomes bottlenecking due to RAM speed, it's better to upgrade other pc parts first than buying new ram kits for meager 20fps gains.

We are currently benching faster ddr5 kits against 5200mhz and DDR4, so we will see the difference live very soon. In general though looking at DDR4 and even all the way back to DDR3, There's a sweet spot for speed where the threshold for performance per $ is just not worth it... Like getting a DDR4 4000mhz kit, it's kinda pointless.

@@techpoint7850 Good to know. Imo DDR4 3200mhz is sweet spot. Anything more than that quickly loses its charm compared to cheap DDR5 kits. MY speculation is faster DDR5 kits will give around 10 to 20 more fps in cpu bound 1080p games.

For us 3600hz has become the norm, the price difference is just not justified to go lower. It will also happen with ddr5 eventually

So upgrading to DDR5 from DDR4 is still not valuable, well maybe if you go to the extreme speeds
