    The Luftwaffe straight up put Erich Hartmann into early retirement because of his outspoken criticism of the the F-104, turns out Lockheed was bribing West German ministers for sales of the F-104 and having the highest scoring ace of all time telling everyone the plane was a death trap threatened to derail the entire deal.

  • @darkest_eclipse8271

    @darkest_eclipse8271

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@fludblud well not exactly, Erich Hartman was very critical of the current leaders of the Air Force, for essentially putting a newly reformed Air Force to fly jets that were 20-30 years ahead of what they previously flew. Coupled with recruits that knew nothing how to fly jets and the training standards did not match the leap in technological development. After they forced him into retirement he was proven right, when the government kicked off key figures and replaced them with more competent ones. The ones following established better training and doctrine which virtually reduced the accidents they had to match other western countries that serviced the f-104. It wasn’t the jets fault, the jet needs a competent pilot and unfortunately the bureaucracy left many new pilots dead.

  • @FireAngelOfLondon

    @FireAngelOfLondon

    @@darkest_eclipse8271 It wasn't just the pilots, a lot of German losses of the F-104 were due to the wings falling off. It's rather tricky for a pilot, regardless of skill, to fly an F-104 with a wing missing. This was because Lockheed lied when they said the F-104 was easy to maintain. Mostly it was, but the wings had to be regarded as consumables and, particularly at the root, inspected regularly. When the inevitable fatigue cracks appeared this was no problem, you just replaced the wings which were relatively cheap. However this inspection required highly skilled maintenance technicians and the recently reformed Luftwaffe did not have enough of them. Most of the resulting losses could have been avoided just by not having cheaply trained conscripts doing the maintenance. During one three year period when the Luftwaffe lost an average of one F-104 per month the Spanish Air Force did not lose a single F-104 in spite of it being their main air defence aircraft. They did not try to fly it as a low-level ground attack aircraft and had better trained people doing the maintenance.

    I've stayed away from alot of mods but I'm more and more impressed with what has been done lately. Love the early jet age stuff. I worked for Bombardier in flight test for a long time and always loved the early Lear jet models with the wing tip tanks. All the unique design that came about then trying to find what works and what dosnt. It truly was the golden age of aviation. I guess it's time to get a mod manager and start playing around with some of these awesome looking mods.

    One thing I have appreciated about VSN beyond the selection is that there's a clear effort to make the mods at least fit into the realm of believability despite working with SFM. I heard this one will have an EFM, and the work to provide a custom cockpit is admirable. Is this a sign of things to come? I know you guys do this for free per the licensing agreement, but it is certainly appreciated by the community. The Grim Reaper's video definitely made it look like this is a genuine challenge that will give a better sense of the aircraft than the previous model, looking forward to it.

    The German pilots went straight from flying the F-80 Shooting Star to the F-104 Starfighter. The difference in performance, as well as coffin corners, was like night and day. When the Italians got their F-104s, they had a much longer training period, and had a whole lot less trouble than the Germans did.

    @@tinto278 I doubt the German pilots were poorly trained. That isn't the sort of thing Germany generally does. The mission types flown, weather, and terrain are also going to vary from country to country - not just training. Keep in mind also that the Starfighter had a stick limiter for pulling up to prevent stalling of the horizontal stabilizer, which isn't an ideal feature on a low altitude fighter-bomber. It was originally designed as a high-altitude interceptor, hence the initial downward firing ejection seats.

    @@tinto278 "Yea well that's Germanys fault for trying to fit a square peg in a round hole by using the jet out side specification." That is complicated because Lockheed was bribing German officials so that they would purchase the F-104. If Lockheed thought it was offering the best option to the Germans, why would they bribe the officials? And to point out the obvious, it clearly wasn't the best option for Germany.

    I studied the F-104 briefly in aero-control and stability classes. The F-104 is know for the high wing loading as one gentleman noted and on approach one doesn't dare let airspeed fall too low or it falls out of the sky. If I recall 180 knots is barely safe. The second problem is it has a delightful tendency to fall into a flat spin. The former issue was fatal because the "A" variant had a DOWNWARD ejection seat. The second problem was that men were quickly trapped in the cockpit by high spin rates. The Starfighter was incredibly fast and was a good stable gun platform with plenty of airspeed. I believe there was nearly 200 Luftwaffe pilots suffered from its behavior.
