its kinda weird seeing the RIOs perspective, cause without having any control, and not really doing anything in a gun fight like this, it kinda feels calm, like you're just watching. but then again im just watching on youtube...

Potentially there are other things going on; handling the radio, looking at fuel and maintaining the pilot's SA, and more importantly fingers on the counter-measure system. He's going to be staring at the other guy, so it will be up to the RIO to put the radar on ground-stablise, checking the contacts on data-link to keep the pilot appraised of the overall picture and keeping an eye on the fuel to make sure the pilot is aware of the fuel state. On top, if the pilot loses sight, you also need to help him out looking for the target.

Sad that all the critical parts of combat flying is taken away by implementing air quake rules of 60 nmi bubble. - No requirement to get home alive (Points for landing alive and aircraft intact. Heavy penalties from crashing, getting shot down, ejecting, damaging aircraft or failing in landing.) - No requirement to learn how to handle aircraft by fuel amount (no need to get home) but one just can keep throttle full in to just die. - No heavy penalties to use wrong missiles at the targets in improper manner, like Phoenix in dog fight (the missile wouldn't really hit at anything as it can't maneuver in such scenarios, that is what DCS fails to model properly, it is a missile on rails) unlike just Sidewinders. - No realistic weather, but that can be said for defense now for DCS by lack of synced weather. Hopefully when new weather engine comes the multiplayer starts to utilize low visibility etc in scenarios. A well done matching would be start a 250 nmi apart, 10 rounds with limited fixed amount of fighters like 12 for each 6 wing teams. Meaning everyone basically has only two fighters to fly. Battle damage rules made for how many rounds does aircraft be out of service if damaged but got back to base. Like small damages are 1 round (any blown tire or similar), 2 rounds with minor warning lights, 3 rounds with severe damage like bullet holes and 4 rounds for any major parts missing like part of a wing or missile fragments etc. Killing a RIO means penalty for 1 round for the Pilot/RIO pair. Each round consist defense and attack sorties, where other needs to protect their assets, or destroy other assets. This means teams needs to revise weapon load how to plan strategy. Air zones needs to be defended by holding the space by time. Longer you hold it, more points. Longer enemy is on zone then less points. Driving enemy away from the zone is as much points as a kill. And you want to do that as losing a plane means it is one less for future matches. If one loses all 12 planes, it is victory to team who has even one plane left.

Some of those are valid points, thought just to address a. Few things. -to win someone must get home alive, and usually everyone endeavours to be that some. Additionally the games are streamed and KDR are recorded on the website, so individuals and the team are encouraged to maintain their aircraft. -the combat bubble is 60NM(sometimes 80N), but there is a zone transit to the bubble which can be very small of 35NM, but the playable part of the map is much wide. The larger map from red to blue base is 240NM, so fuel considerations are real, especially if someone has to make it back to base for the win. On the larger maps, tankers are there to be used. The big wargame style thing you said sounds cool, and I'd happily join one, thought it sounds like a massive time commitment as well as having to be part of a very large unit. Most of the SATAL teams only consists of under a dozen people, and on a squadron basis we have been invited to and tried wargames style base defense/offense games, but to coordinate internationally with timezones and real life work schedules dozens of people to commit to a 3-4 hour game session is simply too difficult

@@n8d0g The K/D ratio doesn't matter. It doesn't add a fear to lose as it is just point +/- game. But when you are out of the week long tournament if you even lose one aircraft, it can be devastating to go take stupid risks. As interceptor or fighter, one doesn't need to kill others to be victorious. It is enough to deny others access to airspace or ground area. If other has enough fuel for flying to mission zone and litter there 5 min, there is not much to use afterburner to do any combat than minute or two. Through that one needs to be very skilled with throttle handling as it means does one get home or not. Limited amount of fighters per squadron for the tournament, limited amount of missiles, fuel and all means that everything counts. In a week (or why not longer, like one mission per week) long tournament where rounds can be those 1 hour long means that evey minute counts a lot. There is more action per minute. Like if it is 6 vs 6 fighters. And it is 12 vs 12 players. That is doable by player amount. For each F-14 is given example: 2x AIM-7 2x Sidewinders optional 4x Mk.82 optional 4x GBU-12 and other gets 2x Phoenix as extra. For each distance fuel is 120% of the requirement, so never 100% fuel. But one can manage fuel across the squadron as it is after all one supply pool all draws it. So one wasting fuel in first missions can mean that at the end there is little to fuel all or possibly utilize range well. Idea is to put more requirements for strategy and planning as team, as well in flight the player skills execute their plans for mission and individually maintain everything. Eventually everyone has a risk to lose two fighters and not participate next events. Or damage them and be boxed until fixed.

Sounds great, and maybe you could try to set up something like that as an event. I cannot imagine SATAL ever changing to that type of format because thats way beyond the scope of SATAL which is an air to air combat simulation not combat scenario simulation. Theres validity to both; in Red Flag exercises, there are 4 v4 sized (or greater) air to air only scenarios, and there are attacker/defender scenarios as well as red vs blue scenarios. Nome of them are more or less realistic than the other, and SATAL events reflect the air to air component. Those week long events are much better suited for servers like Blue Flag or DDCS, which do have fuel, aircraft and weapon limits almost exactly as mentioned.

This is a 6v6 SATAL format game; its a fight to the death within a 60NM bubble, there isn't an option to leave, leaving the 60NM bubble disqualifies you. Additionally at the end of the round, at least one member of the team must have fuel to RTB to qualify for victory. We were a bit lucky the last two guys on their team had no missiles left! If they even had 1 sidewinder we would have lost the round as we were the last jet on our team.
