Those head upgrades made A HUGE difference with the bigger toms. So much more punch. Great kit. Great price.

I have a high end kit by GMS with the same upgrade heads, and I have to say ,the maple Gretsch sound identical. I think you did it with this kit. The price at 1249.00 beats mine at 3k for just the shells, wow. You're going to make some people very happy this Christmas.

I loved the set with both head configurations. I prefer the stock head sound with the high tuning. I love Gretsch drums. Next to Ludwig, they are the bomb diggity! LOL! I own Meinl cymbals, and I really like the Pure Alloy line. Own a medium crash. I've never really heard the 22" medium ride, and boy, am I in love with that! I plan on making a trip to New Hampshire in a week and want to stop by and say hello!

I worked with my parents all summer for this kit, the most beautiful and best sounding for the price drum kit out there. Extremely worth it and has that exact great gretsch sound. Lots of people use this kit for professional kits instead because of how good the formula and bearing edge is, really recommend. I love coming home to it and playing on it. However when you buy this I recommend changing the heads (at least batters) as some don’t even have tone or can hold tone for as long like me 8 inch that had absolutely no tone when I struck it (I got my kit from sweetwater so they didn’t really care, and I got a 14 inch rim with out a hole drilled out, so I got a free rim and I drilled a hole in it regardless 😄. So I would choose here since I got mine on sale for the 1200 dollars which was the cheapest anywhere as the price rose later on to 1400, so I recommend here 100%

What a kit! Well done! Love the low tuning especially. One (slight) criticism: I understand we’re all watching someone else play the kit, but considering 99% of us at least play drums, this would seem the PERFECT case of audience perspective mixing. I kept getting distracted imaging playing the kit, and hearing those beautiful floors on the wrong side, and it would snap me out of it. Great vid as always!!!

My only criticism with this channel! The perspective should stay drummer’s POV and never change, especially within the edit itself. We all want to hear it as we would play it. Floor toms on the left is just wrong.

Well done as always, chaps. Came for the drums, stayed for the Evans heads.

Catalina Maple 7 piece was my re-entry into acoustic drums kit (was stationed overseas and living in base housing so couldn't do acoustic drums) and I LOVED it! Would take that for recording over my DW performance kit for sure. Good news is that I now have a Gretsch Brooklyn kit that I got from you guys to fill that void ;)

I actually liked the drumheads that Gretsch supplied. I do like Evans' G2's but not tuned so low, I guess.

Can't go wrong with maple kits. Always will be my favorite type of wood 🤘🥁

I have a 7-piece Gretsch Catalina Maple from DCP. My first acoustic kit. Absolutely love it. I did replace all the heads with Evans EC2s, which drastically improved the sound.

The kit with upgraded heads sounds great and the natural finish is gorgeous. All around great value deal, also those Pure Alloy cymbals are underrated in the Meinl catalog.

Incredible deal! If I had somewhere to put them, i would have bought them yesterday. They sound great in both tunings, with both sets of heads. I probably would go coated for rack toms and clear on the floors, for the best of both worlds.

I've had a CatMap kit years ago and this is one of the upgrades I used(heads). The natural maple color is what I've always wanted.....now they come out with one🤦....I also have the bearing edges done on the snare and it really brought the snare quality up ....finished it off with cast hoops and pearl floor tom air feet...it was Awesome. Keep up the good work gents...

Gretsch drums are just phenomenal anyway no matter how cheap the kit is. It’s that great Gretsch sound and for a damn good reason. I bought the Purewood Hickory from you guys about 8 years ago. Still have it today and I can’t see myself getting rid of it any time soon. Even recording gigs on an iPhone the thing just sounds absolutely monstrous.

Yeah these modern Catalina's definitely have the Gretsch sound to them. I almost immediately got the "gated reverb" vibe.

Great video! One thing I really like that you guys did was demo these in a high tuning range. Personally, I feel like most reviews usually consist of lower tunings which isn't a full representation of how kits sound.

I have this kit in a studio with Evans 360 Level heads on top and G2 on the bottom. They sound great miked up and still gives the drummer a nice sound while playing. Love them especially considering the price!

very nice video. just a question, will that "natural maple" color will turn darker over time? because I have noticed that some lacquer drum sets turns dark as it gets old.

I have a first generation Catalina Maple kit and it looks great and sounds good, especially the bass drum, but I really love how this new generation of CM looks and sounds even better. This kit is hands down the best bang for the buck for any working drummer. I’ve had my kit for almost 18 years now.

I recently got a used 7 piece catalina maple for ridiculously cheap and I'm super impressed! Ive used it for the last four gigs and shoot me but I think like them almost as much as my 80s usa customs! They tune up incredibly easy and sound incredible with any heads, even heads that don't sound good on other sets! You just can't make them sound bad! How does Gretsch get that sound even without die cast hoops like my usa customs?!

Great choice of a great kit at a great price. I have a 2009-ish Catalina Maple 6 piece in the very limited red sparkle lacquer (really well done). I will echo that Catalinas can be a great kit for the money depending on the year. I think a few upgrades can really beef them up. I ended up doing S-Hoops on all the toms as a cheap halfway between triple flanged and die cast. G2s, Emperors or EC2s really shine on the toms and give a lower extension of tuning. Quick question though - the achilles heel on my Catalinas are the bearing edges. They were not done to a terribly high standard, there are some small chips and dings and spots where they aren't "true" but the bass drum reso side has a noticeable dip in the bearing edge where there's a permanent wrinkle unless I tune the head really high. Given that it's a gorgeous kit and sentimental (gift from the wife) would you recommend I try to get the bearing edges redone or just live with their little bit of gnarliness? Thanks for the video and the love for Catalinas!

Yup, I have this kit in satin deep cherry burst, to me it's a toss up which finish is more beautiful, haha. Both stunning finishes. I added a 13" tom so I even have a 4-tom setup. And a black Gretsch bassdrum head at the front from an old Gretsch Blackhawk set, which I think looks better than the standard white heads they now use. I can highly recommend the Catalina series, to me it sounds wonderful and "high end", especially with those Evans heads in the lower tuning (I have Remo clear Emperors which also work very well on this kit). For some reason I think you're supposed to use K Zildjians with a Gretsch kit though ;) (probably because Gretsch was the official import company for K Zildjians early in the previous century). But seriously, the Meinl Pure Alloys sound beautiful as well.

They did sound good. The Evans heads and higher tuning really made a positive difference. They do look beautiful. Would like to compare to Gretsch Brooklyn and custom drums.

after going around the drum companies with your support staff I am really thinking Gretsch is the best deal in drums. they sell their drums at a decent price and the sound is GRETSCH

i've been piecing together a Catalina maple set, just in case i need it for gigging, but i think my gigging days are behind me. at any rate, the toms sounded great with clear G1s on top and bottom. the kick was a different make, but the kick in the video sounds awesome. i def like that configuration. like Shane said: if you don't want to use it, leave it off the set. i also like that natural finish. maple looks classy on its own. i was about to get a set of DW collectors series in natural finish, but i found a great deal on a set with an exotic finish. they're absolutely gorgeous. my Catalinas have the red finish, i think they call it cherry (not the burst finish), but cherry is a species of wood, so i'm not 100% sure. i had extra Pearl ISS mounts so i used those, so i can't speak to the hardware on these drums, but i'm sure it works fine.

It sure does! Mine is the same. I just can't get over how big sounding my kick is. 22 x 18" with 7 ply 7.2mm thick shells. It's a monster!

in the semipro maple department (Decade, Catalina, Concept, Superstar and now the Mars) i always thought Tama has a slight advantage with the Superstar Classic. Perhaps it is the name, or the retro T shape badges. It could be the fact it´s the only one with a stock 6.5 snare (at this price point, chances are you are counting on the snare). But this Catalina with natural gloss feels and sounds great.

I enjoyed both tunings but do gravitate more towards the higher tuning. Nice sounding kit.

I had a choice many years ago to get a PDP M5 Maple or Gretsch Catalina Maple, both stock heads at the shop I was at and I chose the PDP strictly for the wrap color. I love My M5's, especially after putting Aquarian Performance II on the toms and Superkick II on Kick. After hearing those Evans in low tuning on the Catalina...thanks a lot for making me re-think my choice. Those sound so good low. I wish I had the Gretsch now, but I thought the color was ugly the shop had.

I have a Gretsch Catalina maple drum set I purchased about 3 years ago I was using Remo Ambassador coated on the on the tops and Remo Ambassador clear on the bottoms it sounded great the Tom's were very explosive wanted to try a two ply so I got the aquarium twos no power center those tuned medium blew my mind also another thing I'd like to mention since I never ever comment is I'm thinking about getting a bumper sticker that says drummers please adjust your tension spring what a big difference I feel like I've wasted a lot of time playing with my double kick pedal being too tight I had it almost all the way tight and which was very stupid I watched some videos and realized my pedal was way too tight I cranked it down to about 50% and I felt like I was just a totally different drummer and I felt so comfortable using my feet so my suggestion is loosen that spring LOL different drum heads give this great drum set different sounds sometimes I'll find myself going back to another set of drum heads that I had so I always keep my old ones depends on what kind of sound you're looking for but these drums are like a chameleon they'll fit in with everything

Im Tama/Sonor guy, but Gretsch have been picking my interest lately.

The cherry burst finish Is pretty awesome looking. Also are the rims on here the same as the Renown series? Because they were what I was thinking about getting.

I wish this were available last year when I bought my PDP kit.

Thanks for this review .. I noticed on all rack toms (especially the 8”) with the stock & Evans heads, they really seemed to lack resonance and body. Not so much on either floor tom .. Thoughts, comments?

All in the tuning. I have mine resonating a lot better than these with coated G2 heads.

I own the same kit it's in a cherry burst . The kit you had made is very beautiful. I find that mine sounds just as good as the one you just played .I believe that if you put EC2 from Evans heads in them, you'd find that they will really don't . Planned to come visit in about a month. I hope you have good cymbals ... k sweet line . Ken Savasta

I am the VP of the biggest executive helicopter leasing company on the western seaboard. I haven't had a carb since 2004.

I have a Renown 1 in cherry burst and I absolutely love it, I’ve had it for like 18 years but my small local music shop has a really nice used 4 piece Catalina maple in silver sparkle for like $500. It has red Evan’s hydraulic heads on both sides and a Gretsch double tom mount, too. Looks and sounds good, I’m thinking about snagging it! 😃 Is that a good price? Should I do it??

Gretsch is one of those companies that doesn't make a bad sounding kit, at any price. They have a nice cohesion between their lines as well. Great video, per usual, and nice finish on those Catalina's!

Looks like your Noble & Cooley Horizon kit. Way cheaper than a DW Design series. Stock heads high, meh. Evan's G2 low, nice ! Really liked the Cymbals too. If I was still gigging, I'd have bought this kit. Most people would think you're playing a 5k kit. And with better heads like G2's etc, no one can tell the difference.. See this is why you guys are #1. Y'all get it ! Another great demo.

Hi, how does this set compared to the tama starclassic performer maple/birch?

It's really hard to beat Gretsch drums. Especially this Catalina Maple kit with the color option. Looks good, sounds better. A real musical instrument to inspire a drummer to play. Just remember to not cheap out on the cymbals. 80/20 Bronze is the ONLY way to go! And "DCP Rocks"! Makes me wish I lived in New Hampshire! :)

WAY too many drums for me to lug around to gigs ;). However they really do sound nice. Just played one at a gig a couple of weeks back and I was impressed.

What hardware are you using with this kit??

The hi hat sounded good. The drums were super lackluster.
