dbx ZonePro - Common Problems - Troubleshoot & Repair

Greetings! In this video I will discuss some common issues with the dbx ZonePro family of audio zone processors. I'm demonstrating on a 1261, however you can apply these methods to all models in the range. If you don't feel comfortable repairing your own unit, send it to dbx (harman) for repair. Harman Support phone#: +1 844-776-4899Follow the steps of this video at your own risk of danger & damage to person and property.I order the replacement potentiometers (B50k detented) directly from Harman, and I keep about 10 of them on hand.Remember to make a list of all of the capacitors that look bad in your specific model. For instance, in the 641 there is one near the center of the PCB near a large regulator IC, (may be 220uf 25v) and two in the mic / line preamp section which should all be replaced. As a rule, an electrolytic capacitor should be replaced every 20 years, however when they are exposed to high heat, their lifespan is dramatically shortened. We're upgrading the 85° caps to 105° to help with this. The higher temperature spec will sometimes make the capacitor a larger size, or taller than the original, so don't be worried. As long as the capacitor will fit, it will work.I have assembled some rough BOMs for the replacement capacitors, just make sure to verify with your exact unit.

Hey man I really appreciate your input on dbx products, but a lot of people having issues with dbx venue 360 and PA2, overtime this units won’t pass the logo screen and require hard resets or even connect to a pc and wipe and install the running software, sometimes this steps don’t even work and you need to just throw away the unit, my humble opinion about dbx at this moment is that they are partnered with Chinese companies and everything they make right now is absolute garbage.!.! I don't know too much about their situation from an engineering / update future products perspective. However, I can say after veering away from their drive rack products, that in today's world I would not use one of their drive rack products but look to a more complex yet flexible solution. For instance, you can buy a used Biamp Nexia SP or CS for around $100. In fact, at that price you can buy two, program them both the same, and leave one as a cold spare. Then you can lay out your processing changes exactly as you'd like, and it gives you way more flexibility than the driverack. Even their Venue 360 is completely outdated by today's standards- it has a bare minimum interface, it doesn't have very user-friendly controls (difficult or impossible to input a specific value, making you rely on sluggish faders on the GUI), and a very inflexible routing system. A processor like the nexia is incredibly customisable, and you can build special features and very complex or simple processing chains. If anybody would like to see a video on setting up a nexia, let me know. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.

I made a little notch on the side of the plastic tip of a solder sucker. Apply heat to the solder work, position the solder sucker while the solder iron tip is still on the solder (creates a seal), then pull the sucker trigger and immediately pull the solder iron tip away with a little tilt motion. It's quick! Alcohol cleanup step is quicker also, you don't have all the rosin from the wick.

Craziest thing is that I’ve been installing these since 2004 when they came out, and at the time there was no other unit which could do even close to what a ZonePro does that didn’t involve having to be a sound engineer to operate. These are designed with the retail space GM as the operator, and they are excellent at that. Oh, so I’ve installed maybe 50 or so of these units, always the 640 or 1260, and have never had one single failure. I was responding to a concern from a client and just for kicks I looked up, “do dbx ZonePros ever fail?” And this popped up. I’ve also never noticed them running hot. In fact I’ve never installed a fan and they are always mounted directly on top of the Crown amps, driving JBL Control 25 or 28 speakers and sometimes C26s for bathrooms. This combo has proven dead reliable. Most often any problems end up being user error. Someone may have added IT stuff to the rack and accidentally left an IEC cable just loose enough to become intermittent, or touched a network cable just right to cause the same, even though I stress test everything when buttoning up a rack, meaning I pull and push and twist all cables to assure there are no bad connections. Usually someone has rubbed against a ZC knob and broken it, or some wise guy has muted the zone on the face of the unit or turned off an amp or something like that. I have had a few Crown amps die, but that was because the client left it on for like three or five years and when power went out or it got turned off for whatever reason, it wouldn’t power back up. Crown tech said a cap in the start up sequence will cook itself if left on forever. But at that only two amps have done that, and most clients just leave them in even when I implore them to let them cool off once in a while. The knobs are not potentiometers by the way, which would be analog in nature. Digital versions are called encoders. It changes code. Duh. I’ve had one develop an bad connection at the mic/line input level selection button next to the gain knob. That’s it. Sometimes the screen loses contrast. Usually a factory reset fixed that even. I’ve had one where the manager needed to shut off the unit and let it discharge its caps, and then turn it back on 90 seconds later and it was fixed. It was not responding to input changes on a ZC8. I’ve had ZCs outside at a bar on immediately over salt water, telling the client that location would ruin it and I gave it one year to last. That was 2005. Still works, covered in grenadine and all. Sometimes the LED will fail, but not really, it just falls out of the lense. Put it back out a drop of superglue on it and all fixed. Network cables not cleanly terminated have been my biggest issue, so I e learned to get good at that, and no more of those issues. So. Thanks. I guess I’m lucky or just not hearing about it when they fail. I’ve not heard from some clients in ten years and assumed some other sales guy talked them into something else, but no, they just had to remove it for a remodel and asked which wires went where, I talked them through it, and saved a two hour drive for repair. Other companies sell maintenance plans. I sell a promise that it will be the last gear they buy for many years with no number given, but start listing off places which have been trouble free for 5,7, 10+ years and they are convinced. My lousy salesmanship has gotten me a 95% closure rate on prospective sales. Can anyone touch that? It’s called trust, and especially when it’s a referral, which they all are, they trust me before they meet me. I’ll never be rich from a service plan, but my clients trust my word without question.

Well, quite the yarn! Thanks for commenting. I don't do service plans either, I sell and install equipment that will last for a very long time. I am in the deep south, on the Atlantic, so we have very hot weather most of the year, very humid all year. That's why I've been installing fans on all of my zonepros, they are lasting longer now. If fact (hope I don't jinx it) I don't think I've had more than one failure since I started doing so. Every one I've ever installed will run hot, uncomfortable to touch. Like you said, you must be lucky.

Anthony, thanks so much for bringing some light on the depths of the ZC absyss, I'm fixing a sound system at a bar running on a 640m and I'm having a headache connecting the unit to the software. I cant understand why they came up with such a specific pinout for the RS323. I'll come back to the bar tomorrow for a second round using the LAN cable but today it was so frustrating trying to make it work with a regular RS 323.

You can't connect to the 640m with an Ethernet cable. You have to use the serial cable. I use the tripp-lite Keyspan USB to serial adapter. It works great. First you run the trip light software called keyspan serial assistant (or something like that), and you can see which Port is connected to, it'll say idle. Then when you open up the dbx zone pro designer software, you can go to the settings and select that com port. You must run that keyspan serial assistant software before you run the dbx zone pro designer, every time.

@@therockstudio Oh thanks so much for this! I couldn't get the Keyspan but I got a similar one from a brand called Sabrent. Do you think I could get away by rewiring the RS323 cable in order to get the specific routing the original modem null dbx provides?

@@therockstudionot true about every time. You just need a decent serial to USB adapter, download the driver for that adapter, and you’re on your way. You should look at the hardware part of your computer to identify which COM port you will be using, because you’ll need to punch that into the dbx software to connect your laptop to the unit. There is no pin out mod needed. Once you’ve done it a few times it becomes second nature. It will find the correct address and ask you if you want to send or request a program. Do what is appropriate. Sometimes if you don’t close out a previous session the software will come up as busy.(running) . Just clear that out and start over.

@@andrewhigdon8346 You may be right, I connected to one today and did not start the keyspan serial software beforehand, and it was able to connect. However, the reason I have always started the keyspan serial software prior to starting the zonePro designer software, is because in the past I had to do so. So your mileage may vary.

But stil having problems with the potentiometer DBX part number: 40-2125 to get it here in Austria / Europe. My dealer doesn't have it and Harman Austria doesn't "know" it. ;-) Do you have more infos about type and range (Ohms) of the pot - maybe I can get it from another fabric/dealer. Thank you

I have experienced this as well. I'd check/change the cables on the zc-bus. I think this happens when there's interference within the cat cable. Say your volume is on controller 1, source is on controller 2. Even though the controls are separate and may even be wired to a Break out Box individually, they still share the same 8 conductor cable, even just by virtue of the connector. So if the cable is damaged, or there is a place where the insulation is a little thin, maybe two conductors are getting close together, your control input coming across conductor 1 can now bleed into conductor 2- and now the ZonePro thinks you're sending two commands on two different controllers. Hope this helps.

Can you see the device on your network, without using the Zonepro designer? Like, have you tried scanning the network with a tool like Advanced IP Scanner or Fing? I'd first recommend restarting the units, then disconnecting the one that works properly, maybe there's a conflict? So just make note of the IP address for the good unit, then unplug it. Then restart, and plug-in each of the other devices individually, and try to find their IP addresses. Chances are, the IPs just changed to something crazy, and just have to be reconfigured. That's why it's important to have the USB to serial adapter! You can always get in to the device with serial, not always with ethernet.

Wow, I'm not sure really. Have you checked the capacitors? Also, check the audio bus jumpers. There is also a reset button on the PCB, try hitting that and see if it resets the whole device. Otherwise, call Harman support, they'll likely send you to a nearby authorised repair centre.

Hi thanks for commenting. I'm not an electronics tech, but I'd look at the bridge rectifier and check the taps on the transformer. Beyond this I have no idea! Maybe you have a good electronics tech in your town. That power supply is going to be pretty standard, as far as power supplies go. Also don't forget, you can call Harman tech support, perhaps they offer a replacement PSU.
