Hey Rob, Thank you so much for your first impression! Really appreciate the honest feedback and I'm happy to hear you like the knife! I of course like the sheath but I can understand. As they're all hand made we also didn't want to up the cost much more as we are very aware the knife is in the premium price range and the sheath is probably fine for most. We are working on a kydex option too but as we love leather that is the standard sheath. Looking forward to your field testing! Hope it'll live up to your expectations. For us of course the opinion of a knife maker is an important one and it's both scary and exciting to see hahaha Thank you so much for being so patient for the knife to arrive.

The sheath is pretty great imo (for a production sheath). Not quite the same level as an MBK sheath but FAR beyond the levels of a BRK or other production leather sheath.

Hey Rob. I know you don't like unboxing vids, but, this one was different. It was more of an introduction to the DBK Knife I 'm now looking forward in seeing your 2nd video using the knife. I think your the first to show it off besides the boys. When they first announced the knife pre-order on their channel my wife asked me if I was going to order one. At the time I said no, now I'm regretting it!

I’m super jealous! It looks like a beautiful knife and I loves me some Elmax. I hope these are going to be generally available soon.

The workmanship and quality of my TRC knives is as good as I’ve seen. It’s even pretty comparable to my custom Malanika, and definitely nicer than Bark River even though I quite like those. Looking forward to the next videos, and I’m confident this DBK knife will be one of your favourites.

Love the video. Wish I'd had gotten one but their are plenty of folks like yourself that make excellent knives so at the end of the day ya can't be heart broken on missing out lol

I have watched a few DBK videos... They do review quality. But their style isn't really my cup of tea. I think they would be inclined to endorse high quality, but one never really knows in today's business world... All THAT being said, i do appreciate your review of that blade because i do like the style of that blade, but I'm not really a huge fan of today's new super steels, but I don't yet own an elmax blade because TRC is so very difficult to get here in the States ... Good job on Your look over here! I appreciate it and what you share here.

I mean.. it looks almost exactly like a Bark River Knife. Still, I like the liners and handle shape. It's not revolutionary but I'd buy this over a BRK any day. If I had to give my advice on what knife to buy next, just appreciate the one you have and learn to sharpen it. DBK have 100s of knives and still are looking for a better one. Knives can't do everything *cut* them a break.

Who would say it’s not tough? Elmax is 40% tougher than S35V, and 95% of all other steels. Glad you mentioned the smell, I thought I was the only one who noticed it when opening up TRC boxes 😂

Elmax is not a tough steel. It is a high carbide so is going to be in the same ballpark as s30v and CTS-xhp

@@JohnFrumFromAmerica I'm no metallurgy expert and so who am I to say, but it hold an edge better than other knives I've used both carbon and stainless. That is normally an indicator of harder steels that take longer to wear.

Nice video pal.. looks a good knife 👍 not so keen on the shape of the sheath..too bulky 🙄 glue on leather, does my nut in,maybe even more than marking the sheath when wet forming with fingernails.. always keep nail clippers in with my leather tools now 👍all the best Lincoln 🤙👍

Cheers mate, I'm so pleased that you agree on the sheath especially as a maker yourself, I had a comment on this this video last night saying that the video was a HIT JOB on the knife and the sheath is stunning, I have replied to it sensibly and it looks like the guy removed it.

If the steel is harder, it will be harder to sharpen. If the knife is smaller, it will lose its edge quicker, because more of its edge will be used at any one time. I don't really understand these small stout fixed blades in high hardness steels, as they could be stout folders instead, with easier to sharpen steel and a thinner, more aggressive hollow grind. The only strike against a folder is cleaning blood from a dressing, and it's a fairly small one if you don't hunt. You can still baton a hollow ground folder, if so inclined. It is true thinner hollow ground edges don't quite curl the wood into these nice fluffy feathersticks, but they generally cut with less effort than convex edges, and are easier to sharpen, especially in harder steels.

you sound like a fan of the folder, nothing cuts better than a hollow ground folder my Chris Reeve sebenza is hollow ground and it's great for everything but processing wood for the fire in damp conditions, thats where this size fixed blade knife wins.

@Nikola Čavara What is the point of a fixed blade if you just want to push cut with it? Push cuts can be done by a folder. A fixed blade knife should be able to chop. I realize the mantra is to not chop and use a saw, but the reality is even small task often requires a small hit rather than just pushing. A hollow grind bites much deeper when chopping (only the Full Flat Grind is close, and Full Flat Grinds tend to "stick" into the wood with knives bigger than 9" blades: However the FFG can "hit within a hit", which is indeed faster than going around like the Sabre Hollow Grind prefers to do). All Randall Made Knives are Sabre Hollow Grinds (although very high Sabre in some models, leading to a very slight convexing near the edge of the Model 12 Sportsman): This choice has been refined over decades of use. Biggest advantage when chopping with a Hollow Grind is that it is much softer on the hand, when hitting wood, than a convex grind: It just "sinks" softly, and the mid-blade ridge makes it much more tolerant of accidental lateral twists than is a similarly thin Full Flat Grind... A really thin Full Flat Grind "sticks" and is very susceptible to warping if you are not careful, because it has no mid-blade ridge. Not true of even the thinnest Hollow Grind, IF it has mid blade Sabre Grind (ridge). The convex, when thin enough to slice meat, is even more fragile going into wood, because it gets pinched close to the edge, not away from the edge like a Sabre Hollow Grind. Convex edges do make much nicer wood curls, I'll give them that, but they are only strong if they are so open in angle that they are dull, and they then require a much larger effort when push cutting.

@@wrathofatlantis2316 good insight there my friend, l sold my Tops elchete because it always got stuck in wood, my cold steel sanmai SRK is hollow ground and it's an excellent all-rounder, flat or high hollow are my favourite folder grinds, I'm happy to use all types of grind, all have their merits and drawbacks.

The "sticking" on really big Full Flat Grinds is because the wood's "pinching" is spread over a broad/deep surface, which gives the blade the broad leverage to resist twisting to unstick it... On both Convex and Sabre Hollow Grinds, the wood "pinching" is concentrated in one spot, which means you can more easily "break" the friction of that one narrow spot. This is why Full height Convex do well in chopping competitions, which require both "all the way" deep cuts, and easy unsticking against the clock. I figure the biggest Full Flat Grind blade that is still low energy enough to not stick would be a 9-10" pointy blade around 16 ounces. Boosting even more such a low-end chopper would be a fat handle like the Ontario-style "fat" rubber handles, because they don't move back in your hand, which brings the arm's weight into the cut.

I think it's more of a Sabre than Scandi vex . Sharp out of the box and looking forward to giving it hard trial. I think it would not be worth it if duties in the UK were applied (stupid UK laws).... Not impressed with the sheath (the box and blade are great and the sheath looks poor by comparison) and the ferro rod is a really tight fit.... Think the grommit would spin if used for bow drill fire..... Looking forward to the review video and another notch on the "Carving Stick of Fame"👍👍

That is a really good looking knife. Reminds me of the Bark River Bravo and the Fällkniven F1. Looking forward to your usage review! To be honest, you are the first person I have heard talking about it, wouldn't know it existed otherwise. Since the TBK boys' humor is not something I enjoy (too desperately trying to be funny & cool) I don't watch the channel..

My sheath was insanely tight from the factory, had to use a file to reduce the welt just so I could safely pull the blade out. £340 plus customs violated me for another £80. Knife itself is great though.....

@Nikola Čavara I have many leather sheaths & most break in but this was far too tight. Rather difficult to stretch thick leather that is basically a hard/rigid shell from being sealed. Also it was the welt that was too big, it was digging into the finger guard area like they forgot to trim it down to size.

You can wrap the knife up , soak the stealth for a few minutes in Luke warm water, ram the knife in the sheath, mold the leather with your hands around the knife, leave it in a warm place for an hour then take the knife out and let it dry naturally, when dry treat the leather.

Great looking knife ,it's father of the bark river bravo 1 with different grind on the blade, Great knife ,i have one in 3v ,i think trc have great heat treatment on the blades ,bark river have not so good, i have 3 different knives with elmax and its disappoint me every time inkluding fällkniven r2 ,cos and cpm cru-wear is my favorite so far and o1 for woodcarving

Looks very nice! I wonder if the big ole' brass hole is for using as a neck sheath? Regarding Elmax toughness - anyone who thinks it isn't tough is either insane or has a very bad heat treat....I hammered - as in with a hammer - my Elmax puukko into a steel H section girder to prove a point. It's one of the toughest steels I've worked with. Your smaller sheath is the way to go.

Cheers mate. Some bumboy who has never picked up a quality tool probably saw some bellend nerd on KZread grumble about grainstructure not being as perfect as magnacut (which I will be leaving well alone due to cost). Bullshit baffles brains as my dear old dad used to say !

No I didn't because I was in the second batch which they had to send via postal service rather than DHL who wouldn't ship knives.
