Pretty amazing that Maskaev came back to win the belt after this and his other KO losses...true Cinderella Man...crazy power on his short right.

McCall had a great run here. Guy beat Lewis, Holmes AND Maskaev!

Mcall,one of my favourite heavyweights. Could time a punch and had extreme power in both hands,and was genuinely tough.

1. Oleg Maskaev got knocked-out in 1st round by Oliver McCall (Feb 24, 1996). 2. John Ruiz got knocked-out in 1st round by David Tua (March 3, 1996). 3. Shannon Briggs got knocked-out in 3rd round by Darroll Wilson (March 3, 1996). ALL THREE men in 1996 later on in there respective careers became world heavyweight title champions (!)

A short 6-inch punch from a very strong guy who hailed from a different era in heavyweight boxing.

He always looked like that it was very bizarre. You never knew what mental state he was in. But he was tough.

I was there too spoke to Don King at ringside seats. Orlin Norris fought at undercard too. The Virginia state or Virginia union cheerleaders was there I can't remember who sang the National anthem

They really lied about Maskaev's record. he was 6-0 going into the fight, not 15-0

no doubt, I agree vitali is far more accomplished boxer, has far superior skills, and Chin is undoubtedly better then BigO, but fact of the matter is the fight did happen, and maskaev won at the Time it occurred, its something a lot of ppl don't know and argue about it and try to dillute it

Oleg was one of those fighters whose chin gets a little better as the fight goes on. Golota was another one. Catch those guys early and they couldn't take it for some reason. I didn't know chins have to be warmed up.

Damn this guy had so much poitentual! You couldn't knock him out and his punching power made him very dangerous! He was trained by Steward for the first Lewis fight and I believe if Emmanuel had stayed with him he'd never have gone off the rails so badly. He could have been an ATG.

Drugs and depression got to him. We haven’t any fighters come out of Chicago since. The Midwest used to great in boxing, especially Detroit, St Louis, and Chicago. It’s way too toxic for young kids to get into sports. Ed Brown looked like he was on his way.

@@jonmolina948 He didn't throw it, he had a full on mental breakdown due to mental health disorders. Anxiety, panic attacks, drug and booze use, McCall was a messed up guy. He was nearly about to start sobbing before and after this fight too, it's crazy.

thats right, lennox lewis reigned as undisputed champ, and oliver mccall in my opinion KOS lewis anyway. lewis had a sponge chin and was so passive it was boring to watch, on the other hand. If you hit oliver mccall it makes him fight even harder, Its like he's not fighting until you hit him in the face and he snaps into atomic bull mode, I've watched a lot of fights and i think mccall was ATG but so was buster douglas who beat Prime Tyson and Prime Mccall

Not a fix if hes not warmed up Aaron, Maskaev only had 5 wins no losses they found that out later he wanted to move up fast,but that was one premature stoppage if there ever was one.

this fight was fixed. I've seen Maskaev take huge shots. If a guy goes at the beginning, it's a fix. He doesn't want to take punishment if he's going to lose anyway...probably to set up McCall for a rematch with Lewis.

Weird things happens in the first round. As a fighter warms up he takes punches better. That's what the expression "getting caught cold" means. Gotta warm up before you can take those shots.

I don't think Maskaev saw the punch coming. He might have been looking out for McCall's left hook in that position.
