@@pressureworks Not really. The beach was in front of the seawall...the seawall with the huge gaping hole in it at 1:00. The beach was much wider.

@@pressureworks the sand is always wet we used to have 1200 ft of dry sand during low tide and space for driving. If you know you know I live here and can say 100% the beach as in the sand dunes and space where you would lay and sunbath, ride a bike fly a kite etc is now got and the waves are now splashing against sea walls.

There was almost a 500 mile wide fetch of tropical storm force winds to the north of the storm for a extended period of time resulting in over 20 feet of ocean swell at an average interval of 13 to 15 seconds(also referred to as wave period) on top of King tides and storm surge. Combine these three elements and this is the result. The unusually wide fetch was a result of a large strong high pressure off the east coast of the US. The south side (weak side) of the system was small in comparison. I would note the in my home town of Cocoa Beach which is about a 1.5 hour drive south that there was no damage to beach side homes, condo's etc due numerous beach restoration projects over the last 15 years or so. A substantial dune line with sea oats acted as a barer to the surf that was just as big if not bigger than Daytona Beach.

Storm surge is not a direct function of intensity. Wind speed does play some role, but the size of the wind field and onshore fetch is also important, as well as bathymetry and shape of the coastline. A very large Cat 1 like Nicole will produce a larger surge than a more intense but much smaller hurricane. This is why I always tell people that category is not the only important factor. Worst case scenarios are when you get intense hurricanes that are also very large. The most catastrophic surges on record have occurred when intense hurricanes with large windfields impact shorelines with shallow bathymetry. Katrina and Ian are good examples.

The water was this high after Ian there is no Daytona Beach anymore. I live on the peninsula in Daytona Beach at the highest point where the utility comes across the Halifax River and all this water and destruction is triggering and I am ready to move.

@@stephaniewoznicki2641 Thats another factor I overlooked. Ian exited eastern Florida as a strong tropical storm. Though much less severe than western Florida, Ian's surge along the east coast had already caused substantial erosion. It probably made it easier for Nicole's surge to erode the shoreline even further.

@@storm12weather Angle of waves at the coast ,ocean current ,timing and amplitude of the waves ,will create sand transportation ,which means this sand is taken away from here and moved to further downstream (to the north).This is a normal natural phenomenon only this time it was lethal to the not properly protected property.The seawall should be build like a skirt on al 4 sides of the property .Pile driving ( piles concrete 10"x 10" or equal length approx 80 feet depth of local bedrock layer) is neccesary to support the above structure.A concrete collar (24" x 24" beam) on top of the seawall on al 4 sides.A slab at least 8" on top of the soil integrated with the collar of the seawall.Integrated with the slab beams 24"x 24" on top of the piles grid c to c 144".Al beams reinforced with rebar.Concrete should be saltwaterproof.

I bet they built up the sand to build the houses on, there was one house they used black sand. Then they put up a sea wall up to contain the sand they built up. the sea walls were not strong enough obviously. Mother nature again showing how much stronger she is than humans. Mother nature reminding humans who is in charge on this planet.

That is not going to happen, humans will loose very time. Humans are so arrogant to think they will win against the force of mother nature and have tried for 200 years to do this. @@jacklandaupresents And homeowners wonder why they can't afford homeowner's insurance. Fire/Flood/Hurricane/Tornado if you carry a mortgage, you have to purchase coverage for it all. Taxes and insurance are burdens, but, State and local authorities confiscate your money to provide for the welfare of others. One way or another, everyone pays the piper. Build your house on sand, and you get a demolished house. Everyone knew this going in - no one should act surprised.

You are an expert with your Drone!! A sand foundation is foolish to build on. And what’s worse is building a home right on the beach, especially a place that gets bad storms and hurricanes. It adds up to a disaster. @4:53. The house on the left is being built. I wonder what they’ll think of this? @7:16 This area is surrounded by water, so in-fact what people have done is built houses on a sandbar. Even though builders put huge amounts of sand on the sandbar in order to get more real estate , it’s still a sandbar that was built up by the ocean at one time. 🤷‍♀️

It Was A Hurricane One Of The Odd storms this late in the season, I was in this one Thank GOD no Issues Trees and The Vegetation Needed Watering...many Don't Realize how many farms are here in our GREAT State and we needed all that rain for our tropical Vegetation.

The way to be near the beach, is to have your home on solid land and not on a built up sand dune and drive to the beach. Your home is safe from water and you get to enjoy the beach. Yes, people still get damage from hurricane winds as well. I live both close to the beach and close to the mountains.

5:37 next time it rains, this sand will be washed away and with it the house, and this guy worries about washing some sand off his deck, thus contributing to the erosion.

All of the puny efforts made with different materials, stone, concrete, wood, steel, in a waisted vain effort to hold back the sea.

What I would like to know is how they going to rebuild cause as long as places like this is NEAR the water I don't think it would be worth rebuilding another place not with the way prices are & going higher everyday.

No one should have been allowed to build anywhere close to the beach. It should be left natural , FL is in for a rude awakening, they have only 8 months till next hurricane season starts , giving them time to clean up , then do it all again next year.

All of Florida is on Sand. Look at the houses built across the street, they're all fine. Its building right on the beach that is foolish. Matters not if its on sand, dirt, clay, stones, rock, bedrock. When the ocean hits, your house will wash up in Africa in about a year.

I my not be a construction worker but I didnt think I seen any rebar in the cement patio or what ever that was that collapsed by that house that had all that 3 their layer of patio behind their house it looked like some one just poured cement on sand then one good crack and the water washes the sand away then guess what the cement caved in wow who'd a thought of that !?

In other places like Wilbur by the Sea, the rebar is in the ocean along with all the other debris.

Bound to happen in a storm surge zone A. Not very safe to build homes along Florida coast .water temperature too warm. Developers don't care they got there money. Infrastructure really a problem.

Im wondering how far back from the homes the water was BEFORE the storm surge.

Storms, earthquakes, floods, can happen anywhere anytime. We live in a time, where nothing is safe. But honestly it's terrible the damages on these homes. Thank goodness no loss of human life. Find a better closer inland place to build.

Many of those structures actually had damage from Ian. They got hit twice, once as Ian was leaving, then a direct hit from Nicole... but yes, before Ian things were very different, and Nicole definitely did a lot of noticeable damage!

Yes, I think a lot of people thought Daytona Beach area did not get as hard hit as the West Coast of Florida. It got hit very hard. It’s pretty sad to see all this.

I think it's time for legislation to stop reconstruction on shore lines & barrier islands in the event of total loss. And no more new construction! And just think about all the storm debris that has polluted the ocean & gulf coast by Ian & Nicole.

So I take it you DON'T think the Governor will take care of the constituent's concerns.

Hopefully all of those unsafe monstrosities will be condemned. And finish being destroyed never to be replaced again. Many of those Coastline areas need to return back to natural Preserve protected land that should be made public beach open to the public so that no one individual owns any property or structure all those affected coastlines. There should have a Army Corps of Engineers Seawall built just before the road that goes along the ocean Shoreline. With plenty of plants and vegetation and sand to detour the coast from further erosion returning the area back to the way it used to be when it was a natural beautiful protected sustainable beach.

Well they wanted to be near the ocean. Now they can dive off patio.

If any 1 person has no place to go, we need to ask each other to please help us.. be bolder, ...be hopeful. In hopes all are a community mind.. community survival...community thriving.

Why on gods green earth would anyone allow to permit these shacks be built on this tidal sand in the first place? It's not a question of if, but when. They, not the tax payer, should be responsible for cleaning up their mess.

200 million years ago all the continents were connected together as one. Who should we blame for when they broke apart? The Mayor, the City Counsel or the Governor? I am amazed at peoples opinions. Humans weren’t supposed to live in houses, build cars, build roads, fly in metal tubes at 500 miles per hour sitting in lawn chairs sipping on an alcoholic beverage beverage watching movies or addicted to the internet. Is life all about blaming someone believing us humans should be immune from natural disasters? How about praying for forgiveness and being more compassionate for one another?
