Dayhiking the Ouachitas: Horsethief Spring Trail in Oklahoma's beautiful Ouachita Mountains

Come along for a beautiful Ouachita Mountains hike. In the video I start at the Cedar Lake trailhead heading south and take the west side of the loop over scenic Snake Mountain and up to the intersection with the Ouachita Trail. From there, I head east to Horsethief Spring to have a meal and refill my water supply before heading north on the east side of the loop and back to the Cedar Lake trailhead.
In all, this dayhike was 14.5 miles, not overly strenuous, and full of pretty sights along the way. The vistas from Snake Mountain (on the west side of the loop) and the swim in Cedar Creek (on the east side) were highlights for me. Another exciting find were the many beautiful campsites along the way. I'll definitely be going back to spend more time on this route.

I love your videos! I haunt the same areas as you. I just did the old military boardstand loop and have also done the Ouachita Trail. Working on finishing the OHT. I used to live in Del city ok right by the afb. Where do you live in ok?

Oh, that’s exciting! It’s a beautiful spot. Regarding the shoes, I went with Altra Lone Peaks. That are so comfy on my feet. Have a great trip if you decide to go!

I don’t believe so, but I’d double check with a quick Google search.

Did you get any ticks or chiggers?

I have before, but I didn’t so much on this visit. I treat all my hiking outfits with permethrin spray to deter ticks and chiggers these days. It’s something you can get in the outdoor department of a Walmart or most other retailers with outdoor gear.

I will be in Tulsa for work for 3 weeks, hence I have two weekends and a rented car ... also I am an experienced hiker (but in the Alps) looking for long hikes - what trails would you recommend? (I would also be up to doing a two day hike I am ready to drive a while but I dont want to spend the weekend in the car^^) ... In case you answer I thank you already : )

If you haven’t already gone, I’d recommend starting at the Winding Stair Trailhead in the Ouachitas and hike over Winding Stair Mountain and Rough Mountain. I did a video for that one going the opposite direction in the last couple of months. Another good one is the Black Fork Mountain Trail just a bit further, just over the Arkansas state line. I did a video of that one early last year. If you want to do a point to point hike, I can recommend a shuttle. I hope you haven’t gone already, and if you have, I hope you had a great time!

@@OklahomoHiker Thank you very much I will watch the videos and probably hike both of them. No, the job is delayed and I probably will be there in October, so a bit outside of the ideal season but I am still really looking forward to it. Tbh when I heard Oklahoma I was thinking of endless grass plains and the occasional cow^^, but what I see on your channel looks gorgeous ... Let me know if you ever need hints on where to hike in the Austrian Alps ;) Thanks again and good luck on the trails
