Day Out with Thomas at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway (ft. rare Mallet locomotive) ~ 02/03/2024 (HD)

After making those Thomas stories in Trainz 2019, I thought it was fitting to go and see a Bagnall 0-6-0 tank disguised as the famous blue E2. On the first weekend of March 2024, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway held a Day Out with Thomas event for the first time since 2020, so it's no wonder why the event was so popular.
Mainline Steam's Bagnall was running shuttles up and down the mainline connection at Glenbrook, while WWs 480 and 644 (two 4-6-4 tank engines) were each running their own service to and from Fernleigh, providing 30 minute headways out of Glenbrook. On the way to the GVR, I also filmed KiwiRail's Te Huia and Northern Explorer passenger trains in Huntly; both of which were hauled by a DFB class diesel locomotive.
(This video is not sponsored or endorsed by the Glenbrook Vintage Railway or Mattel, and it's not monetised because I don't want Mattel coming down on me like a ton of bricks again).

31:52 Correct that is Ja 1250. After Auckland Anniversary weekend, we did a big shunt around the yard to move 1250 into the workshop

The low pressure side needs more volume because as the steam expands over the course it powering the high pressure side the volume increases, the aim of the game being to have sufficient volume of partially expanded steam admitted on the low pressure side and sufficient space and time for it to expand and act on the piston in the low pressure side in a way that matches the output of the high pressure side. You could also do this by having a longer stroke instead of a bigger bore but this introduces all sorts of problems of it's own. It was very much a gimmick in most cases and quite impractical in terms of extra labour maintaining the additonal parts of all these systems when compared to the cost of running a simple 2 cylinder loco that might consume a little extra coal and water. Makes a great deal of sense on a ship where you have limited resources of coal and fresh water to work but on a railway where you pass multiple water sources and can easily supply coal along longer routes its not worth it

Shame you can't make it over to the Awdry event this year, although there were some right weird people last year. It was worse, as they copied what a few of us had did on Awdry 2

I don't think the WWs were supposed to have names, but I did overhear one Dad say to his son that they were meant to be Donald and Douglas (despite looking nothing like the Caledonian Railway 812 class, let alone 0-6-0s). WW 480 had nameplates reading 'Terry' on the DOWT weekend in 2007, but I don't know why the GVR didn't give her and 644 names this time around.
