Day Of The Dead 2023: Preparing for Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico

This is a visit to the local markets in Zihuatanejo, Mexico the day before the national celebration of Dia De Los Muertos 2023 begins. The shops are filled with flowers and people preparing for the celebration. The flowers, candles sweets and other offerings are intended to entice the souls of those who have passed away back to the family home so they can be honored.

    Nice tour of the markets, Tom. I know it happens in a lot of places, but the unrefrigerated meat still amazes me. The flowers, on the other hand, are wonderful. A great snapshot of the preparations leading up to this celebration.

    Hi Craig. I'm glad that you enjoyed the tour. The unrefrigerated meat can be a little off-putting. I've heard that it is fresh despite it being very hot and humid here. The way I understand it is that the chickens are killed every morning at 5-5:30ish and brought straight to the market after being plucked and dressed out. So getting there early would be ideal. Many tourists won't go near those chickens in the market but will happily eat one in a restaurant. Overall, the food here is very good and reasonably priced. The flowers were fantastic. I have no idea where they are all grown. Thanks for the comment!👍😊

    I took a food safe course one time (to sell hotdogs off a mobile stand) and I learned the dangers of storing protien products like meat in warm temperatures. I'm sure many people tolerate it well (or unknowingly like in restaurants) but I will take a pass. You two have found the right place to spend the winter (I looked up that coastal city on Google Maps) Lovely area. Take care@@TomandJulieMineExploring

    Glad that you have had the chance to experience traveling in South America. We just got back from six months in Mexico. I really miss shopping at all the small fruit, vegetable, meat, tortilla and seafood stands. The quality of food was very good. Better than I was expecting. I also had a good time as stage manager for the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival, where twenty different acts performed at numerous venues over eight days. I worked at the two biggest venues. Happy that this brought back some memories for you!👍😁 PS Julie was around town doing something else when I made this video.

    @@TomandJulieMineExploring Wow you guys went deep into the country! Did ya'll drive the RV down that far? Hopefully you were unaffected by the cartel presence in Michoacan and Sinaloa, and were unmolested by the Mexican authorities? A friend of my father-in-law drove into Mexico on the gulf side from Texas and ran into some trouble with the Mexican police. He was pulled over and a gun was found in a trailer he was pulling. His vehicle and trailer were confiscated and he was jailed for a few months in a Mexican prison. He was allowed to go free only after contacting the American consulate and rallying family members to come up with a boatload of cash. So anytime I hear stories of folks driving deep into Mexico from the US I'm curious how their experiences compared.

  • @TomandJulieMineExploring

    @TomandJulieMineExploring

    2 ай бұрын

    We did not drive. We flew directly from Phoenix to Zihuatanejo. The cartel is active in the general area but doesn't seem to bother tourists. There were about five executions that I heard of during the time we were there. I have no idea what someone would do to get killed. I have to say, though, that where we were, it felt much safer than most good-sized American cities that I'm familiar with. We were out late(2am) a few times in the bars and didn't have any problem walking home. We were in kind of the local/tourist mixed area. You definitely don't want to get caught with a gun. I left all my weapons at home.
