Day in the life of a NICU nurse (+ some NICU footage)

Here is a rough overview of a work day for me in the NICU :) Obviously I couldn't include absolutely everything that happens at work, but I hope this gives you a good idea of what being a NICU nurse is like! I'm happy to answer any and all questions in the comments below!

    Thank you for this, it was really helpful. Would you say the charting is a lot in the sense that it takes a lot of time to do & can sometimes feel “ in the way” of your focus to actually care for the babies? Or it’s pretty quick and easy to do ? I work in med-surge & feel like the requirements for charting takes away so much time that I need to actually focus on and help my patients appropriately

    What do your schedule look like as far as how many days a week you work and time off? Do you have to work weekends? Holidays? Also, would you say working in the nicu is one of the more stressful nursing positions?

  • @PeaceBeStill39

    @PeaceBeStill39

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi sorry for responding late! I have to work 3 weekend shifts a month, one major holiday in the winter, and one major holiday in the summer! I get to put in my own schedule each month but our scheduling committee ultimately decides which days I work. We also have 4 days we can request not to work, but it’s not guaranteed, and 2 or 3 “off” days that we won’t be scheduled that month. I actually think the nicu is one of the less stressful nursing positions. It is very stressful but in my opinion it’s more doable because at the end of the day you are improving the lives of babies and that’s hard to beat!

    Hello(: I'm starting my nursing program in august (hopefully) and I'm trying to think after I graduate. How did you decide NICU vs peds?? I'm thinking I'll get a better idea what I want to do for sure after clinicals and everything....🤞

  • @PeaceBeStill39

    @PeaceBeStill39

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes clinicals will be very enlightening for you! I’ve always wanted nicu but did have the debate of doing peds for a little bit during nursing school. During my ped med-surg rotation is when I decided I couldn’t do peds.. peds med-surg from what I’ve seen is a lot of chronic illnesses like CF, which is difficult. Also the number of diarrhea patients I had the day I was there turned me off 😅 but I did enjoy PICU, and I think I would’ve liked ped CVICU as well. Also, I feel like the nicu generally has more happy stories than sad ones unlike PICU

    So I'm a vet tech and I'm thinking about going back to school to do NICU, I have a job shadow set up with my aunt... But as far as questions I have I do have a few, so evaluating the baby during touch time gets easier the more you do it right? You'll notice more with more experience right? Also do you do phlebotomy as a stage two nurse? And with the training between the stages, does that always take a year? Do you always have to work a year in one stage and then move on to the next? Sorry I have so many questions I'm just so curious lol

  • @PeaceBeStill39

    @PeaceBeStill39

    4 жыл бұрын

    Alex King yes exactly, assessment skills get sharper and quicker with time! And yes, I’m trained to insert IVs but it’s such a tricky skill that I’m still working on. We have resource nurses that are usually available to help with venous sticks since it can be challenging. Every unit is different in regards to training. Some units will train all the levels all at once, and others will have you spend x amount of months at one level before moving to be trained on the next. Getting training for level three for me will come about 1.5 years after starting since our unit has been too busy to train us when we were supposed to be trained. But the training itself will probably take less than a month of actual shift work, depending on the availability of preceptors
