Day in the Life of a Japanese Karaoke Box Worker

A day in the Life of a Japanese Private Karaoke Box Worker in Tokyo Japan. This is Japan work life in Tokyo as single person living in a 1K apartment and working at large Japanese company with a very Japanese work culture. Japanese employees even wear a SHASHO(社章), a company badge that’s issued to employees when they are hired. In Japan, many salarymen wear it proudly as sign of prestigious especially when working at a large company. We see the employees morning routine, full day at work as well as what he does after work. Masa works at BIG ECHO, a leading Karaoke chain in Japan. In fact, Karaoke and Karaoke boxes are deeply embedded Japanese culture and entertainment, as students sing after school, adults sing during and after drinking parties, and even individual users come here to practice. It’s become a part of everyday Japanese life. And unlike some countries where Karaoke is commonly performed in a room filled with strangers, In Japan the Karaoke box aka room, allows for small groups of friends to enjoy each other’s singing in privacy.
With more than 439 facilities all throughout Japan, the company's 6300 dedicated workers ensure that their customers of all ages have a fun and entertaining experience each and every time. And Masa is an important piece as he’s the chief manager of 3 shops located in Shibuya, and this is one of them, located on center-gai street, the heart of Shibuya. The Karaoke is open 24 hours a day, so the staff work in shifts to ensure a smooth operation. Today, Masa works the day shift which starts at 1PM, but he also works the overnight shift as well as the early morning shifts depending on the day.

I think it's absolutely fantastic at how humble this gentleman is. He is the manager of three seperate major locations yet he still has no problem cleaning the toilets and standing out in the cold with a sandwich board. I wish we had more management level employees like that in the United States.

When I was a front end leader at a grocery store I made sure I did all of the duties regularly so I could help out as needed. The department head couldn't figure out why the staff followed my directions and not her's (even with directions were the same), it was because I would help them, and they knew if I was calling for assistance I was already helping.

I think the context was more 'you must (have to be) be smart (for the job you do)' in which case the answer is just an agreement with the statement while also inferring she must be smart thereby, she may not have meant to sound overly confident as many japanese don't like to do this (of course a culture doesn't reflect every member but I think its a safe bet)

Dittoing the plenty of English songs. Granted, the one we went to a lot when I lived in Japan was right outside a joint Japanese / American military base, but we went there a LOT and never had any problem finding plenty of songs to sing, from the pre-K aged kids through the adults. I'm pretty sure the catalogue of songs is company wide since they were also all listed in a big printed book in each room. That's another thing - because they're separate rooms we would bring along the kids. They could sing if they wanted to or some of the rooms even had a small play area for the kids. I miss it so much...

I stayed at Miyashita Park when I visited Tokyo last year - I walked past this place multiple times and had no idea! Cool to see how it runs on the inside... surprised it's management that does so much cleaning. You'd never see that in the West.

Oh, wow. I did NOT expect to ever hear someone casually say they read Kousaku Shima. I know that's such a small thing, but that was so neat to just hear randomly.

Wow 50% discount is alot! I work for a large pharmacy chain here in Australia, and our staff discount is only 10%, and we only get discounts for some of the products we sell, not all. Another great video, I love Paolo's 'Day in the life' and 'behind the counter' videos.

This was a fun video. Different from the Karoke in China when I did one over a decade ago. It was all in Chinese and luckily for me, I had a person who knew the language.
