Day in the life of a DOCTOR in the Emergency Department | Chatty video, where have I been? | Vlog 19
Ойын-сауық
Whether you're a medical school hopeful, a future doctor or just interested in watching hospital vlogs, I hope you will enjoy coming along for this Emergency Department mini-vlog and a chatty catch up with me the next day, where I tell you about some of the medical cases I’ve seen on shift as a doctor in A&E. I also tell you what’s new with me and why I’ve not been posting many videos on KZread recently.
If you don't know me, I'm Sarah, am a junior doctor in the UK. I make videos about my life as a doctor and also what I get up to in my free time.
Feel free to subscribe if you'd like to see more of my content :)

Fab videos as always! The sit down at the end where you went through the medical case studies of the shift in depth was so interesting. I'd love to hear more case studies!
I really enjoy the vlogs of your shifts, even if they’re all in A&E these days! They’re such a useful insight into realistic life as a junior doctor 😊

Hi Sarah! Recently found your videos as I was exploring the idea of getting into med school. Love your videos and the discussion about the cases that you come across. I haven’t checked out all your videos yet. But would be interested in seeing some book reviews of books that a written by other medics about their experiences in medicine. The good and the bad
I just found your channel, and I'm glad I did! Great video❤👍

Dr Sarah Nicholls I’m not too sure - think I’ve seen you before but then again not sure. I definitely will come say hi! ❤️
Yay! Helloo 👋 glad you mentioned about the good questions and thorough tests etc. I went to ED once with suspected pneumonia. Dr said it’s just my asthma. No tests, no scans. Upgraded my pumps, see you later... I ended up with pleurisy down the line as a result of..... undiagnosed pneumonia lol. It’s great you had a break and great to see you back. I look forward to more vids xx

Awww thanks for the shoutout. Would love monthly favourites! Furosemide is an incredible drug my cat was born with a heart problem was meant to live only to 2 he lived until June aged 10 he was on furosemide for 6 months and his breathing improved am immensely but eventually I had to let him go because he deteriorated and I didn’t want him to suffer. Whilst he’d been on furosemide he was ok running around meowing chasing his shadow he was fine. Furosemide gave us another 6 months. Last week my mum attended the hospital for a pre assessment (for trapezectomy) and she had high blood pressure she attended a second pre assessment for her 3 years colonoscopies and again her blood pressure was high. Mum has been expressing to us that her legs were really hurting for a couple of days but she had been doing a lot and she had bashed one on the door of the dishwasher so we thought that might be why. She didn’t mention this to me until days later - I had no clue. We go to this pre assessment I sit opposite her and after her blood pressure (which has always been good) I went to pick my diary up from my bag and As I looked up I saw dark purple object - I looked closer and thought why is my mums ankle dark purple almost black. I said mum what’s wrong with your leg it’s dark purple and swollen. She said I don’t know it’s been hurting for days I told your sister but she didn’t think it was that bad. Got her home (really should’ve taken her to a doctor sooner but they were shut and I wasn’t sure what it was) took her jeans off and her leg was shiny and swollen and when I touched her leg I just knew what that was.... she had edema in her legs. And her blood pressure was preventing blood circulation she has bad varicose veins. I booked an urgent appointment with the gp and they gave her furosemide and something else for the blood pressure and her legs gone right down. Had I not looked up what would’ve happened. I knew what was wrong I don’t know how but I said to her you have fluid on your legs and high blood pressure so you need a diuretic and tablets for the blood pressure. Mum said We will see what the doctor says and when he said it mum went “yeah you were correct” fist pumping the ceiling (celebrating me being right for once) but whilst also embarrassing us hahahaha. But yeah furosemide seems an ever constant in my life first my gorgeous and sadly missed cat now my mum. We are becoming well acquainted. Hope you’re ok.

Sarah Nicholls hahaha thank you for always being so lovely and honest :)
The fact that i live near the hospital you work at :)
So after the ambulance drops the patient off at the hospital when you walk into the room the guy thinks to himself "She's the emergency room doctor??? Getting into a motorcycle crash and breaking both my legs turned out to be a good thing."

Just ask next time you see me!! 😀
I watched it all the way in the end! I loved it. I like Pukka green tea too! My favourite flavour is the Sweet Vanilla Green Tea, but they discontinued it. :( I know I mentioned to you on Instagram that I had been to the ED twice recently due to the abdo pain caused by gastritis. I have to say I feel terrible for going to the ED, esp for the second visit. It is mainly because I sort of knew the pain might just go away on its own, and ED is super busy. I genuinely feel I was being a waste of time and space for the ED, especially after Dave's birthday party. Dave's at the same stage as you in his career in medicine. There were 5 other qualified doctors at his birthday party. I remember saying to Joe (another doctor) that Norwich's ED was super busy - he said to me something along the line of "that's because it is full of people like you who turn up, and magically heal themselves. ", although he was half drunk, and he can be quite sarcastic when he's not drunk. I still think it was a good idea for me to go to the ED, despite the fact that the doctors didn't have to do anything. I was in so much pain, I thought I was going to pass out. I thought if that ends up happening, it is better for to be in the ED rather than at home. But yeh, I spent the rest of the day sleeping and feeling super tired. I basically got woken up by the pain 2am in the morning, arrived in the ED at 4:30am, and left at 10am. The pain disappeared at about 7am in the morning. Anyway, I really hope this kind of thing doesn't happen again. :(

@@SarahNicholls thanks! That really means a lot to me. I really do feel the ED has more important patients than me. Hopefully it won't happen again, now I am on lansoprazole. I really hate gastritis - it strikes with absolutely no warnings. I was feeling totally fine in between the ED visit, which is why I didn't think of making a GP appointment. I am also logging everything I eat, in case my stomach feels funny again.
Hearing about your shifts makes me excited about how the A&E works in UK. Can you explain a little bit about available job options for someone after FY2?
