Day in the Life of a Cardiac Nurse

I had three great fears coming out of nursing school and passing the NCLEX last year: 1) not knowing how to do anything, 2) not finding a supportive workplace, and 3) not finding a job at all. But I am beyond privileged and grateful that all of these fears were dispelled having found the perfect hospital unit for me. As I celebrate one year as bedside nurse, I finally take you with me to work as a cardiac nurse. I have been wanting to film this video FOR THE LONGEST TIME. Working in a cardiac stepdown unit (specializing in both cardiothoracic/open heart surgery and interventional cardiology procedures), I have seen the most amazing and bewildering things at work. Whether it be caring for post-procedure patients (CABG, valve repairs, TEVAR, ablation, pacemaker placement), scary heart rhythms (A-Fib, V-Tach, heart blocks, Torsades de pointes), diverse heart conditions (CAD, hypertension, heart failure, heart attack, sepsis) TONS of blood (BLEEDING EYES!!!), TONS of poop and pee…I hope you learn with me in this video. Big thanks as well to our amazing physician assistants/PA, nurse practitioners/NP, nurses/RNs, and PCAs/CNAs who chimed in to share their experience on our floor too! And beyond all of these long medical words and jargon...LOVE and SUPPORT. These are the words that truly define my unit. I love my workplace and I am beyond honored to work with the people I work with. I will take them with me in my heart and mind wherever I go. I hope you enjoy this vlog! #RegisteredNurse #Cardiology #CardiacSurgery

Hi! Thank you so much for watching! And congratulations on finishing nursing school and becoming a nurse. Also congratulations on the cardiac position! I remember when I first started. I was super nervous and anxious! So many things to learn, so many concepts to remember, so many skills to obtain. BUT ask a lot questions, remain excited, always be on time, always ask to do things, be kind, and BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF. It’s okay to be scared, it’s okay to not know stuff right away, it’s okay for things to repeated until you learn them. You know more than you think you do. I’m super excited for you! Let me know if you need anything. Stay safe! 🫀

If I ever need open heart surgery, God forbid, I am going to need significantly increased pain control before even thinking about moving out of bed. Picture the walking zombies cities around the country on fentanyl. That’s about the condition I would need to be in. Just the curious thing I’ve been thinking about, and what year in your training do they start, teaching or conditioning use to be desensitized to the pain that you have to cause patients?
