Seeing Ruben successful to this day makes me happy for him. In Salinas, in a seedy neighborhood with a lot of history, I grew up in the same apartment complex he did. When I reminisce on those days, I wonder how he went from looking like he did, to this super tough boxer. The Ruben of back then was a big kid, but I always knew he was a good person. I'm glad he was my friend.

some body I agree the experience they get definitely carries over to their pro careers. The best American boxers (ALI, Tyson, Leonard, Roy Jones, mayweather) all went to the Olympic in their amateur careers
