Day 58 Wapiti Shelter to Piersburg, Angels Rest Hostel April 11

Brutal rock and root terrain today all the way through the hike, with a brutal downhill into Piersburg.

My lesson that the trail taught me early on with the rocks. We instinctively try to land on the areas in between the rocks for some weird reason. As the rocks get bigger, it is much faster to walk ON the rocks and build the cognitive capacity to move fast on top of the rocks. The brain struggles at first, but once you get comfortable, it becomes a smooth, fluid, and fast process. Wet rocks make it more difficult, but rocks are welcomed in NH and Maine...its the damn wet roots that are the enemy!!!!!

Thanks for the tips, I wondered if I should be trying to Rock hop on the smaller ones. Neither path was working for me yesterday. My feet feel bruised on the bottoms. My zero today should help that.

Your snack spot looks like Angel Rest. That section was my first AT section. We climbed UP Angel's Rest, went to Doc's Knob shelter and then back out the next day. BRUTAL! It looks like Doc's Knob got a major facelift with that deck. I've never seen it, it looks pretty new. Thanks for talking and walking, loving the journey.

You are awesome and have a great attitude. Thanks for the views and thanks for taking us along. The rocks are very impressive. Please be careful. I think ER had something when he talks about walking on the rocks. I would think we don't like to walk on the rocks because we have all had loose rocks turn under our feet and dump us into a creek, the ground and turn (sprain) an ankle. So, it would be our natural survival kicking in to go between the rocks. Again, thanks for taking us along.

I’m enjoying the longer videos. It’s great to live vicariously through your hike. That view of the lake was incredible. So good to hear you’re still “having the time of your life”. Keep it up man!

“Every step could be your last” ....so TRUE! That goes through my mind when I hike as well. Foot placement is crucial when dealing with rocks and roots. One wrong ankle roll and snap! So be safe PT. Oh and the view overlooking the city where you had your snack, WOW! Really nice. I bet you had to pull yourself away from that. Love it! Thanks again for sharing all this with us. Enjoy your Zero.

Bearded Servant and Soaring Eagle are the 2 KZread vloggers that I know of that are off the trail. Thor , ( Techno Nomadic) has had tooth issues and stayed a week or so in a hostel but is back on the trail to my knowledge. You just keep doing what your doing and you will make it to Katahdin. 🤠

I empathize with you on the unexpected rocks. I too, hiked north from Wapiti shelter, and enjoyed the initial climb to the ridge on a nice, sunny, spring day. There were great views of the valley from cliff-side overlooks, with birds on the wing floating on the breeze. It was idyllic.... But, just after that communications tower, the trail turned into the devil's playground; rocks and roots, uneven trail, rocks and roots, blow-downs, more rocks and roots, poor blazing, and then - even more rocks, sharp ones! I slowed down to less than a mile an hour, as you could easily lose your balance, fall, and break any number of bones... I was very thankful to arrive at Sugar Run road, and the turnoff to Woods Hole hostel. On another topic, I am looking to get a cell phone for the very first time, and am wondering if you (or the viewers)could give your views on your Pixel 2. I am trying to decide between it, and the iPhone 8+, or iPhone SE (I like the compact size and weight of the SE, but prefer the larger screen and stabilized cameras of the others).

I live my pixel 2. The only down side is the port is a "c" port and you can't charge it and use earbuds at the same time. It has only one port. And it takes a special pig tail to use ear buds.

Thanks, PT. I assume that as most phones migrate to USB-C, so will ear bud / headphone makers. Same thing with some sort of adapter to allow for the use of ear buds while charging. An attraction is the stereo speakers for music video and movie watching. Do you enjoy them, or are they just hype? Also, do you find the phone easy to pocket, and hold by hand (not slippy?) Appreciate your advice/experience!

Yes, for sure the camera auto-focuses on the trees. All the videos of "views" that are behind more than a few trees are really just showing the woods :) It's a great incentive for getting out there in person and hiking though! Maybe one day while we're all still around they'll invent a way to really capture it, but for now you need a backpack and some good shoes.

Sometimes I think the trail trolls gather all the rocks they can and place them in the middle of the trail. :) Get out of the numbers game. Messes too much with your mind. Hike your own hike and it will all take care of itself. Reboot was back in Gatlinburg on April 9th and all seemed well. Techno, Bobslife, Scoutmaster, Onebackpack, Amanda, etc all are doing well. We haven't heard from Joyful Rambler in six days. GregP, Craig Mains at that family of 8 are still on the trail as well. Gucci and Grumpy experience an ankle issue and are off trail. Seems like the snow and temps below freezing was pretty challenging for a lot of hikers this year. Keep up the good work.

You mean hiking videos? This year or last .. last year I watched Early Riser, Dixie, Darwin on the trail, reddmage, and that's about it. Just parts of others. This year I don't get a chance to watch much of any others, but I do know personally know Thru-Hiking with Scars, I just met Ringo, and Reeboot, Bearded Servant although he is not hiking anymore, I met Arnie 1 mile. I try to see who is vlogging and is around me in case I run into them. As for videos that I just watch.. I love music videos, mma videos, hockey fights, people are awesome videos, and whatever else just pops up as recommended..

You made me laugh. You said if you don't make it to Katadin, you're just a section hiker. But you would be one hell of a section hiker. Very, very, few people ever, hike that kind of distance.
