Day #26 DRAWING with Underglaze Pencil - 30 Techniques 30 Bowls 30 Days

Days 26 DRAWING on Ceramics with Underglaze Pencil (zentangle design).
PLEASE NOTE: • 30 Bowls ~ 30 Days ~ 3...
All 30 videos were were shot in REAL TIME. Since it takes approx. 2 weeks to accumulate a kiln load there was not way to show REAL TIME and FINISHED PRODUCT in one video. The finished bowls were not fired to completion until Day 31! The last video in this playlist is of all the bowls completed. Thank you for understanding!
Zentangles: "The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns."
Product: Amaco Underglaze Pencil - Black
You can draw or sketch anything you like on pottery using this pencil! Zentangles was my drawing of choice. Putting these patterns on pottery was one of the first decorating techniques I chose to do for this 30 day project. Yes, even though I am more of a scribbler than a sketcher, this is something I found to be quite relaxing and something that goes along with my love of working with ceramics! If you haven’t done this before, I’d recommend it for everyone!
(Side Note) Since the past firings of my few zentangle pieces came out blurred by the clear glaze, there is an element of danger for this piece! I’m hoping it doesn’t happen and will take all steps possible to prevent a disaster..lol! We will just have to see how it comes out in the kiln! Hands folded & fingers crossed!
Thanks so much for watching!

The only video I found putting zentangles on fireable ceramics was my past video, so I decided to link to a search phrase that guides you to zentangle resource videos!

    FINAL RESULTS ARE SHOWN IN THE LAST VIDEO OF THE SERIES: 30 DAY PLAYLIST: kzread.info/head/PLOB50Jeugi0y6o8lXVhnLOwtpB5mm9aQI All 30 videos were shot in REAL TIME. Since it takes approx. 2 weeks to actually to complete a single piece, it's was physically impossible to show REAL TIME and FINISHED PRODUCT in one video. The finished bowls were not fired to completion until Day 31! The last video in this playlist is of all the bowls completed. Thank you for understanding!

    Yes, I'm sorry about that. Most people coming upon the videos now don't know the 30-day project was completed in "Real Time" on a daily basis and unfortunately, it took another two weeks to finish all the pieces. If you head back to the Finale video of the 30 projects you will see the finished result. Again my apologies and thank you for watching :D

    Last night I learned that you can use tortillons or smudge sticks with underglaze pencil for a smooth, blended look. Can't wait to try it!

    I realise that I'm a bit late linking up to your video's namely this one so far but it looks like I shall definitely watch heaps more.My question is this, why don't you show the finished article once it has been glazed. So many Potters have great Video's but never show the final result. Any chance we can see this one.Regards Jan B.New Zealand.

    +Jan Bugden Hi Jan! Great question! It can take up to two weeks to finish a piece from first throw to bisque fire to glazing to glaze fire. When I made these videos it was to show techniques within a day of when I'm doing them. I always do a final finished video, but never in the same technique videos because of the "real time" factor. If you click on the "FINALE" video, you will get to see all the bowls finished! ..{I just noticed it in the right top side bar} Hope this helps :D !

    +hobbypotter HI, again, wow, now I am going to sit down at some stage and go through all of your video's. My congratulations and I do like the end result of Day 26, now all I have to do is get myself some of those Glaze pencils, well, maybe one or two they are quite expensive.Regards Jan Bugden.

    Lol... I'm not teaching actually. This was a day in a real-time project where I tried a technique a day for 30 days. This day I tried using an underglaze pencil to draw zentangles on a bisque bowl. This was just a day in my hobby potter journey. 😊

    Have you tried the underglaze pencil under a colored glaze, like a thin coat of pale yellow or something? If so, how did that turn out? Can you post a pic of this bowl after it's been fired?

    I just tried this last week and posted a photo yesterday on Instagram (@hobbypotter). I didn't use the underglaze pencil from this video, but used what the call Choxils ...which is still an underglaze pencil. It was cool...the color showed through and it looked awesome!

    Does the pencil glaze stay on after final firing? I’m struggling with drawing done lines with a brush and need something like this to draw on my porcelain 💕 love the video

  • @hobbypotter

    @hobbypotter

    Yes, the lines do stay on, but are not necessarily "fine lines"...They will blur a little with glaze. Depending on the type of line you want to draw, you can also draw with regular pencil, then trace over it using underglaze in a "fineliner applicator". I got mine from Amazon 😁

    Great playlist! Thank you. Can you put glaze straight on to underglaze paints applied to bisque-fired clay, or do the underglaze paints need to be fired?

  • @hobbypotter

    @hobbypotter

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much for the encouragement! You can apply underglaze to bisque and then cover it with the clear glaze or any other glaze that is either clear or transparent... So that you can see the underglaze color through. Underglaze can be applied to both bisqueware and also greenware…if you apply at leatherhard stage, just fire it to bisque as usual so it's part if the piece, then apply the transparent glaze as usual. 😁

    Thank you so much Manu! In this video I used an Amaco Black underglaze pencil. Just last week I used a different product called Choxils ...it's still a sort of underglaze pencil (like a chalk) and it worked out beautifully when I glazed over it. I added it to my Instagram account yesterday (@hobbypotter) if you wanted to take a look-see. It's the budvase with flowers. Thanks so much for watching!
