A water-soaked bandana around your neck will help cool you down. The roll-on sunscreen is easy to apply to your face. If you are starting to feel thirsty, you are already well on your way to dehydration. If you try to drink too much water at one time in the heat you are liable to throw it all back up. Its better to take smaller, but more frequent drinks. Lots of desert hikers find a nice shady spot during the peak of the hot day and nap, and then get up when it starts to cool down and hike again. Monitor each other for signs of heat distress. Excessive heat can make you lose your mind a bit, so it is good to have another set of eyes on you. The heat builds all day in the desert, so the warmest time of day is usually a little before the sun is ready to set. Have fun!
That drop into Hauser canyon at 2:17 kicked my butt. Seemed like it took forever to get down there.
It’s so good to see James talking more on camera. The sun is a killer out there I sunburned my scalp one time and that was not fun at all. Happy Hiking 🏔⛺️🥾🥾💕
Thank you for showing me the trail. I was able to do the first 5 miles a few years back. I’m 60 and have health issues so this is the second best thing. I live just outside of LA. Love you guys and what your doing. Joanna California
Great to see that you are back out on the trail! Enjoy your hike and thank you for sharing your experience 🏕
I am SO proud of you! Great job!!!!! I remember when you were in Georgia making videos on gear and testing gear because you want to do the A.T. and now look at you.
Wonderful scenery! Good luck on your trail! Health and Happiness to you both.
What a place to wake up!
Hey Kelly! What a way to start day 2! FYI the iPhone can take some awesome night shots, you should give it a try! What an amazing landscape! It’s so different than the AT. Oh no! I was just saying how perfect your hat was. Im glad you got it back. Huge thanks to Toasty for sharing his though, you’re a good man. You really have to remember to camel up when you hit water if you want it “cold”. Otherwise it’s always gonna be warm. And while warm water is ok, warm Gatorade or the like is awful! I hope you are getting your electrolytes in, the desert will suck them right out of ya! Huge thanks to Emma and Joe for the magic. Yeah, your lips definitely got sun burned, that’s not good. Toasty you owe us an extra quack next video. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful
Man that 1st mountain you showed us was incredible. Glad you were able to get your hat back. Stay hydrated, seems like that is going a thing on this trail. Looking forward to your next video.
Glad to see you 2 on the PCT. It’s exciting to see your new adventures. Good luck!
I am so thrilled to follow along with you two on this journey….don’t push…..this terrain is so different…..go at YOUR pace……..God’s speed, be safe!
It's really good to see you back on the trail. For sure a little different from the AT !!! Thank you so much for the videos so we can see what this trail is all about.
You guys are doing great. Camel up as much as you can. 🌻🌻
I am so happy that you are so happy - it shows!
So happy to see you getting an early start. On the hot striches you can take a long break in the afternoon and get some more miles in the evening when it starts to cool down. Great to see you back on the trail.
Great vids, totally addictive. You capture so much. Been a huge fan since AT/Pennsylvania.
Hey Kelly, I think you really captured the dryness and the heat one experiences in the PCT, I can see folks starting to hike by 4am, to get some miles in before noon, and then finding cover until the heat passes, i wonder if having a back pack umbrella would help, cheering you on, namaste.
Very nice to see you got up early. Way to go. Take your time and stay hydrated. Stay well and be safe.
Kelly, I live in San Diego County and hike in the chaparral (and the *real* desert to the east) a lot. If you have a trekking umbrella, use it. It will really help preventing sunburn.
Glad someone found your hat! Too bad you couldn't swim in that lake!
Love watching you in this completely different environment. Good thing you have James there for gear backup🤣it’s so different from the AT. Keep drinking that water!!
Ok, here goes. I hope your hat finds its way back to you. The horned lizard was very cool to see. Lucky water cache. No swimming in the lake!? WooHoo! your hat. Getting the least desired part done first. It only gets better. You have such a beautiful soul. Thanks for sharing. Random 😜
Having a rough day on the AT today due to issues at home and your videos uplift my spirit!
The fact that you got your hat back does not surprise me. You have angels all around you. ❤️❤️❤️
Kind of tough Hiking here in Arizona it’s in the 90s
Great to see you back at it Looks a lot different from the AT Be careful and stay safe 👍🤠
Hey girl. So glad to see you walking again. Love you lady. ❤️❤️❤️
So sweet your friends met up with you at Lake Moreno. Take care of you. Keep trekking. 😀
Looking forward to your journey Watched you on the AT Good luck...... From Watauga Lake in TN....
Thank you ✌️
Hi you 2! 8.8 is a good second day. I’m glad you both got your hats back . Maybe an umbrella?
Same temp back home, I’m in Fort Smith, AR, it was hot today, 86 degrees with 80% humidity on Friday eek, sticky with that tornado feel… Have fun, good luck… 🎅🏻🏴☠️🏔
So glad you were able to get your hat back. Looks like you will definitely need it. Drink lots of water and stay safe.
Get urself a balaclava. I'm pretty sure I saved my friends life by giving her mine at one point in the grand canyon. Her head was throbbing and looked like she was about to have heat stroke. I took my balaclava and wet it wit a bit of water and put it on her. Helped a lot. Be safe out there.
You got your hat back! Woot! Hat & Water are key!
Amazing journey. I grew up in the Sierra Nevadas in northern california and it would get 110 degrees in the summer.
Thanks!
It's ok yall will be fine !! Yall got this....
Gotta luv a hammock…🤩🤩👍
1:51 Oh, that looks so good!!! Now I'm hungry :)
I like to carry a little tube of pure zinc oxide for my lips. Works great in the High Sierra, where it's both very dry in the summer and high UV.
Have fun Kelly. Long time follower. Gonna follow you and Gazellle Baker. Manage that Sun!!!
Of course it's record highs on your second day! 🙄😂 Way to push through!
The PCT is so different from the AT, it looks amazing and difficult. There are no trees. You should tie a string to every thing you have and connect it all to your wrist so you don't lose anything else. :D I can't believe you thanked Ella while she was cleaning the toilet. Thank you for the content.
Yay, glad you found your cute hat!
Maybe it's too early to talk aboot, but these two snowy weeks in Tahoe is going to make the Sierras "fun".
It will be interesting to see how much he can hammock. I was wondering if I would have to take my tent for the first part and then switch over to the hammock.
Water is the big essential however, when crossing the desert always carry extra. When y'all get to a town get some electrolyte to ad to y'alls water it will help. usedta live in the Sonoran Desert y'all both look happy. Thanks for taking me along.
Glad you found your hat! I mean, you just got it! You handled the loss really well though. Good attitude.
Good video with some good beautiful views, not like the AT, so let's keep on hiking...nice sunrise..
Don't lose your hat again or your trekking poles Lol!!! You were really lucky that you got it back! That lady was really nice to take the time to find you and give it back to you! Have you thought about using an umbrella to protect you from the sun? I think Dixie used one when she hiked The PCT.
Well looks like you are feeling better and eatn good stay hydrated out there get the electrolytes too
Love you video’s.
Kells stop losing your stuff 😂 and we are definitely gonna need to see more lizards on trail.
It gets in the 100’s so be careful
Great clip
Timing is key. Night hiking is a good option. Or, have a very early morning wake up and go before the heat kicks in. Stay hydrated. Have an afternoon siesta. You have plenty fitness to do the hiking distance if you look after your body.
You both need umbrellas. They shade well. Put your water bottles in socks and soak the socks. Evaporation will cool the socks and water bottles for awhile. Carry extra water. Good Luck, Rick
... looking to join the cool kid club ,, need to pick up a sun umbrella and pack strap clips .... great not only for the direct sun but rain, snow and even a little privacy in the open terrain for nature breaks ... .. ..and for the long water hauls pick up a 3L CNOC for the need ,,it rolls up when not needed pretty small and weighs little ... put in any creeks found to chill if possible ...
The picnic ground looked beautiful. What lake was that?
"Tomorrow we're gonna wake up early and hike out....." - yeah right 😂
Just keep saying to yourself it is "dry heat" I was told that and it was worse than the humidity. Love the content, you guys are the best!
I just got back from hunting. I slept good. I feel like I catch up on my sleep out in the woods☺
New Subscriber. I'm starting in a month. It might be a tad bit warm lol
So what have the temperatures been on trail? I live in a place where the temperature only gets below 80° F between 8 pm and 6 am, so I’m wondering how bad the temps must be if you need to get up and hit the trail so early!

@S M Yeah, I teach in Papua New Guinea and then spend summer breaks with my family in the US. I’m still curious to know what the desert temps are, though.
just in case you don't already know, replacing electrolytes is almost as important as water. salt, magnesium and potassium are all really important

What sun hat are you using?? Have a good trip.
I feel like you need more Gatorade and water you seem dry! I’m so glad about your hat!!
I would like to suggest you contact Gossamer Gear and see how fast they can send you their $39 chrome dome umbrella to a resupply stop. I think it would by a happy addition to your desert experience. The desert is an anvil, the sun, a hammer. (Not affiliated.)
It's so good to see you back on the trail! I'm following The Field Trip, Daisy Hikes and Julia Sheehan and Long John. By the way, I think Long John has the same orange jacket as you. I love it when the hikers I'm following meet up on the trail! Hopefully you'll see them at some point!
Aaaah just catching some of your videos and noticed your pack! Is it the Waymark 50L? Can you tell me your pack size because I'm struggling to find a pack that is small enough in torso and noticed recently they have one in XS! I'm 5'4" (15.5-16 inch torso)and you may be taller I don't know bu look about my size!! But if that's the 50L LITE I'd love to know the size and your torso size for perspective!

I’m 5’7 and 145 lbs. I’m carrying a 40L framed waymark Thru pack this year. I think it’s a s/m torso size (I’m all legs) and medium hip belt size.

@@kellyhays23 AAh you have the Thru pack then! that's great! I am not all legs and have short waist so I know to size down then thank you so much!
Good thing you're starting on the south end otherwise you would be hitting that desert in the summer time.
Whatever happens to the hat situation, keep your face protected! I'm seeing some PCT hiker vlogs with their noses already badly sun-damaged.
❤️
One good thing about your hiking you eat good lol
get a uv umbrella and strap it to your pack!
If you need any assistance around the Mineral King/Sequoia/Kings Canyon area, I’m a local backpacker hmu
So different than the AT scenery
This is training for the CDT lol. Triple 👑 coming up ❤ 🤍 💙.... God bless you both in Jesus precious name ❤....
So how hot was it? And they gave you a lake but you can't go in it? That's not nice.
muy Bonito atardecer y bella la naturaleza y bonita caminata feliz tardes lady
So is 9 Lives your PCT trail name also?
👍👍
Every 2 hours you need to reapply sunblock or you will fry. Wet your shirt to help keep you cool, I told you the sun is brutal here. Be safe! Drink more water than you did on the AT, especially electrolytes.
What kind of bread is that?
Hello, have you seen a snake on the trail?
Nice Horny Toad action. You will acclimate to the heat as it gets hotter! It can be brutal in the High Desert section also. I plan on doing some Trail Magic at the Deep creek section 6 miles or so passed the Hot Springs, Its a Dry section. Maybe Our Paths will Cross 🥾 Goodluck guys! Happy Trails
Hot days cool nights watch out for rattle snakes if you hike at night.
Alll miineee 😍😗😙😘😚😎
Losing things is better than losing other stuff....
Hey Kelly... I know a few people starting behind you. What was the ladys name that found your hat? Oh... and you have another YT coming behind you also...Becca Lil Skittle

@S M I stand corrected. She is going back to the CDT. There are just too many to keep up with this year.LOL
6:18 you look like Carrie Underwood at this part of video
I still love you, Kelly.. Haha
👍👍👌😎
Cool adventures, enjoyed watching it together with my wife. This is actually a thing that we do together - prepare some tapas, 5euro wine 🤣and watch KZread on TV, like travel videos and walking guides to get inspiration for new adventures ourselves. We were inspired by creators like this, naturally Bald, Harald, Eamon and it evolved into making our own travel videos and adventures. If you feel like watching something new, please check out our channel 😉
I hope your videos get longer as the hike continues. KZreadr Nightcrawler has great videos of his hikes that are about an hour long because he never edits and you would never know it. He just uploads whatever he shoots and you get a real feel for the hike. We would watch your videos no matter how long they are.
Get yoself umbrellas!
You must have been in az
Umbrella for the sun?
