Basketball Hall of Famer and two-time NCAA National Champion as head coach at the University of South Carolina Dawn Staley, sat down with Ryan, Fred and Channing for a rare and candid conversation touching on everything from her Philadelphia-upbringing to the Gamecocks recent run in March’s NCAA Tournament, to media criticisms, to impact on culture and women's sports and also reveals her secret obsession.
One of the most decorated female athletes in women’s basketball, Staley took her passion for the sport and applied her point guard abilities to navigating life and helping young women follow their dreams. Often widely criticized for her outspoken approach, Staley is unapologetic in standing up for her players and the integrity of the game which is what makes her such an inspiration and rarity in coaching.
Staley shares how her passion for sports and competition stems from an early age growing up in North Philadelphia and helped set her on a path toward her wildly successful career. Only a few weeks removed from a tough loss in the final four, Staley is finding focus and peace in moving forward and the success her players are having as women off the court and the people they’ve become.
Channing asks how someone so dedicated has time for themselves and he asks her if there is a personal component to life or what she does for fun…and her guilty pleasure may shock you!
Tap in every Tuesday at noon eastern for our premiere episode of the Pivot. Special NFL seasonal drops on Friday afternoons at 3:30 pm. We are your one-stop platform for all your sports and entertainment content.

I taught Dawn when she was in 8th grade. She was so smart and get her work done in a class and come find me a P. E. Teacher and challenge me to a one on one. She would beat me every time. Later after she graduated from college she came back and mentored some of my students from Fitsimmons. I am so proud of all she has accomplished.

Dang she beat you 1 on 1? Did you ever win against her? Pretty cool that you helped her along the way. Wish I had a teacher like that growing up. I had some very negative coaches and teachers as a young person. It was very damaging to me. They were bitter and angry adults and didn't want us to succeed. I dont know why I had to go through that, but I'm always happy for people that got to have positive experiences. I'm not surprised when they are successful in life.

I love, love the Pivot. I was a fan of Dawn's as an athlete. However, as she has evolved beyond the role of a player, to coach, advocate, and beyond, I can't get enough of watching her work. She is unapologetically speaking up and raising the next generation of boss women. My God, count them, the number of young ladies she will get to influence and release to the world. As a person who lives in a world with a passion for youth and a desire to make the world better, you bet believe, you move alone, and spend time doing work that seems/feels odd/boring. However, spending time at the trial is indeed way bigger than a hobby/curiosity. To change the game, you got to understand and know all the strategies. I can't wait to see how that trial and others manifest in her mission. I am grateful for the platform you young men have created. Keep doing work!

I'm a huge LSU fan and alum. However, I must admit. If I had a daughter that played basketball in high school looking for a college, I'd definitely steer her towards SC and Dawn Staley.

Yeah definitely. Coach Staley is a positive, big picture thinker. I'd definitely want my kid being taught by her. Mulkey has a lot of strained relationships in her life with players and family, it makes me think she'd be unfair to a person for no reason or if there is a reason, wouldnt know how to resolve the issue. That's unhealthy and I wouldnt want my kid to be subject to that.

Did she tho? Because it sounded to me like the officiating which impacted Boston being benched is what was a huge reason for their loss. That SC wasn’t allowed to play their game. In the press conference she basically implied the Iowa coach made racist comments. Coach Bluder is far from being racist and that was wrong. She set up the Iowa team to appear being racist and that they won because because they’re white. Iowa played hard defense and they worked their ass off to win that game. They shut Boston down and that was the plan and it worked.

@@Vashby78 multiple things can be true. She got out coached, the players got outplayed, the refs were horrible and Iowas coach (and the press) said racist tropes that dehumanized the SC player (“bar fighters” and thugs)… the way the world acted when AR taunting CC is proof of the hypocrisy. Look at what the First Lady did by trying to Iowa a pawn bc she knew who was backing Iowa and why many (not all) of their fans supported them. And the crazy thing is BOTH CC & AR where ok with things bc they know what happens on the court. the players just wanna play. They wanna talk trash (and yes some of it is racist), but they want to play and move on with life. It’s the media that keeps it going after the coaches expose it.

@@atlsuperstar yes I listened to the entire interview. She did take responsibility for the loss and then added her but the officiating, but we couldn’t play our game how we usually do and we were labeled so and so. Coach Bluder said it was going to be a bar fight going into the game. Where I come…which is from Iowa when I think of a bar fight, I think of old drunk people going at it for the stupidest of reasons and defending their name til the end or until the cops show up. Wasn’t a dig at her SC girls, it was a way for her to express how hard the hawks were going to have to defend and fight for their team. What people don’t understand is that teams come from different parts of the country where things have different meanings. It doesn’t make a coach or a state racist. It’s not everyone in the world against people of color for every damn thing.

Black women have always been scrutinized, disrespected, and ruled out, but we always show them with our intelligence and actions. You make me proud, as well as your team! Keep keeping on and don't let the naysayers or the haters deter you! I wish you and the team the NCAA 2024 championship!
