Agreed. As funny as the "Exterminatus everything" jokes are, people tend to forget that the Inquisition reserves it as the absolute final option, and that the WH40K setting is so horrible that these situations come up frequently. World's been taken by Chaos and is on its way to becoming completely corrupted into a Daemon world? They better destroy it now, because it's impossible to stop the process and once the conversion is complete there's nothing they can do about it. Tyranid invasion? Chances are any force you send down there just won't have enough ammo to kill everything, and even if they succeed you're likely to lose the majority of your own forces. The scariest part is that Exterminatus isn't even guaranteed to wipe out the Tyranids on the planet.

These two videos perfectly sum up the mood of 40k and show what sets it apart from other sci fi franchises. The pure epicness of it all is one thing, but the solemness of it even in the face of the death of an entire planet. The exterminatus isn't a siege where warriors scream and ransack, it's almost like a funeral where the fact that it's happening is unfortunate even for the Inquisition itself. Love it

Cyclonic torpedoes doesn’t only destroy the earth, it ignites the atmosphere causing the entire planet to burn like a star. If you survived that then the explosion of the bomb plus the biosphere causes the core of the planet to destabilise and cracks the world into pieces. The Emperor’s Inquisition doesn’t enjoy half measures.

I've always thought the DoW series had writing that was either hilariously cheesy, cringe worthy retarded (Metul bawkes), or pretty spot on badass (Brotherhood is not lessened because the other is foolish - Eliphas). This scene was so well done, the build up with the music, the Space Marine giving the last rites to the planet and it's population before it's destruction. The other Marine (I'm sure he has a name, I haven't played the game) discussing the events post bombardment. With his final words meeting right as the torpedo drops saying "From a single BLOW from my hammer, god splitter." 10/10 scene, that's poetic.

+Battleship009 Reason why it looks like a nuke? it is a nuke. a cyclonic torpedo to be exact. this thing is LIKE nuke, but on steroids. Its a huge warhead that, when it detonates, sets of a self-sustaining nuclear reaction which pretty much turns the surface into a nuclear hell. Funfact: there is also a method in which a cyclon torpedo is strapped to a melta charge. in that case the warhead gets pushed into the planetary core and THEN detonates which tears the planet deathstar-like appart.

LatinoBadass Misconceptions really here Pretty much any faction in Halo is capable of buttfucking a planet or entire star-system from the inside out. The Forerunners, for example, pretty much turn Exterminatus into art. Their list of fucking up a Galaxy includes the following...ripping apart entire planets on what counts as "Private Security Infantry", reducing entire planets into ash with one shot of their point-defence guns on their weakest ships, flinging entire planets into Slipspace (Which reduce it to proto-matter), blowing up entire stars and solar-systems like popping candy with a single frigate, destroying entire proto-universes (We are not fucking around here) just to power up their engines and of course, the Galaxy-Busting Halo's themselves. And these are just the Forerunners, god forbid if we go into 'Silentium' Flood and the Precursors which pretty much cause reality, time and alternate universes to bend over and make the likes of Tzeentch look like a four year old brat in comparison (The Precursors still managed to lose in a strait out war with the Forerunners though, although it has been stated that it was intentional in the first place and they wanted to know what 'extinction' feels like... only to use said 'feelings' to eternally torment the Forerunners...because they are Dicks like that). Your source doesn't seem to be aware of what Tzeentch is capable of (I suspect he's assuming that Tzeentch doesn't take a more active role because he isn't capable of doing so, but there are several, visible signs that this isn't the case; he routinely mutates the fuck out of Sorcerers who he believes are stagnating, for example, and it's implied that literally everything that is happening in the universe at the moment is part of his plan), and if we're talking about long-dead species, both the Necrons (in their prime) and the Old Ones would be laughing hysterically at the Forerunners and Precursors both. The Old Ones were insanely powerful psykers. They could twist the dimensions into a pretzel in their infancies. The Necrons had soul-eating, reality-shredding gods who regularly fought beside them on the battlefield, and weapons that they routinely used to sterilize planets in order to feed their gods. The only reason they haven't already ruined the Imperium of Mankind is that they haven't brought them out, yet--mostly because they're only interested in them as food, at the moment. That's not even talking about things like the Tyranids, which make the Flood look like a joke, or the Chaos Daemons, who are. The Chaos Daemons. If there was an all-out war between WH40K and the Halo universe, with all races from both universes present and accounted for at full strength, the Halo universe would be laughably outmatched.

Really, I think it comes down to who has the home field advantage: if we fight in star wars' ring, they would have the advantage of tech, coming equal to the Tau. If the fight is in Warhammers ring... Oblivion. I think on of our greatest strengths is the amount of soul destroying abilities( aside from shear brutality), which is something star wars' does not have a defense for: they don't even consider the idea of spiritual destruction being a viable form of combat. Add to it, seeing as Jedi are sensitive to the anger, fear and hate that the sith emit, they would be hopelessly overwhelmed at best by amount of negetive energy in the Galaxy: driven insane being most likely. Sith I think would also be overwhelmed by it, but more in the sense of "holy crap, so much power!"

I miss this quality in Warhammer games, epic voice acting, epic music, epic atmosphere...

I think it's pretty safe to conclude there aren't really any other universes around that can hope to stand a chance in the warhammer 40k universe.

Crysis' Cephs could do the work. The overhive ones are just necrons in terms of power but they are collective minded squids in power armor heavily specialized in energy.

Anything that doesn't have a reasonable power limit will beat 40k. Even Astartes are not invincible, just smarter, faster, more accurate and more armoured than anything they fight. So Goku is one, that space authority thingy where they talk about feelies, star trek and obviously god like heroes/entities from DC and marvel. 40k is the rough realism of war coupled with fantasy.

Thus is the fate of all furries and the sickening heresy which they wreak upon existence. The Emperor protects.

The actual size of battleships in 40k depends a great deal on what source your using. The smallest battleships have generally been portrayed as is around 4 kilometers long, the largest being over 20 km.

Graphics capabilities may have improved over the years, but this is still one of the best depictions of Exterminatus that I've ever seen.

@Poiuppi Godsplitter is the Daemon Hammer of Gabriel Angelos the warhead used in this Exterminatus is a Cyclonic warhead. In this case, it looks like a two stage cyclonic warhead.

I agree. Gabriel,General Sturnn and even Gorgutz are perhaps the most inspiring characters in Dawn of war. Gorgutz's line about "Maybe all we do is fight an' die but you know what? We'ze good at it and we're still gonna win!" :)

Thesixthgoon The reasoning is "millions die today to save trillions tomorrow." And, y'know. They're not wrong. There are things in this universe that eat planets whole, and many of them are born from the tiniest of heresies. The Imperium is absolutely fucked; it's not a question of whether, but when. By doing things like this, they postpone the inevitable.

the ending is probably a mixture of the 3 "good" factions. Angelos has become Chapter Master and the Blood Ravens have recovered Adrastia took Kyras' helm as proof of his corruption and stoped the exterminatus Farseer Taldeer's soulstone was recovered by the Eldar also the ork ending could be canon, with Bluddflag stealing the Judgement of Carrion just because he's that awesome

Probably one of the best speeches in ever that reflects our human nature and its from a video game about crusading and purging those that are against us, The Emperor Protects.

this music is hauntingly beautiful, it adds atmosphere and weight to the speeches, and I want it.... The Emperor Protects.

@elydis Also during orbital bombardments, since just about every world has the same pre-fabricated buildings, due to STC's, a great many world have very similar defences. Those worlds often have bunkers that can withstand an orbital bombardment. Few alien worlds are ever really conquered anymore, so the Imperium often responds to threats to worlds of theirs besieged which tend to be valuable either way as elydis said.

It's so...beautiful to see an entire planet destroyed.

Both exterminatus cutscenes were so epic! EXT-ERMINA-TOOS!

I remember the first time I saw this scene my mouth hung open for a good 2 minutes afterward.

@Yellow13Firestorm @Henners1991 Well the enemies of the Imperium has fleets of their own and even planetary defenses (Planetary cannons) to defend those bases. Also, heavy void shields are often deployed on high value assets to prevent orbital bombardments thus the need for precision strike forces like Space Marines.

@N01H3r3 Yes, sorry for that mistake. I realised it later that it's for space combat., sort of a railgun, which accelerates the projectile to light speed.

@crazy4sian Yup, this is a cyclonic torpedo I think, or some other exterminatus weapon.

One of the most perfect 40k moments in all of media. On the level of Astartes.

Ramilies-class Star Forts are larger. The Phalanx is basically an enlarged Battle Barge. A Ramilies-class, on the other hand, is a mobile and warp-capable fortress even bigger than a Blackstone.
