Cracking shots! As always. But I think it has always been the 'Norm' for Dawlish during some storms, as I took some 35mm still's back in the 60's from the cliff path above the boat cove as the bridge was too risky to go on. I think that was the same storm that smashed windows on the old "Gaiety" restaurant on marine parade and one from a different storm of a wave that had just dropped on to the Blenheim Hotel, I just missed it breaking!!

The properties look extremely vulnerable against the power of those waves. Its relentless, I think id feel safer a bit further inland!

It's scary. Let's hope it can stand the pressure this time.

Patrick Honey I am now 84 and lived in the area during and after WW2. When my Father came home from Army service in 1945, I was 10 years old and he was employed on the GWR as a plate layer. Following the war the Admiralty raised concerns at Govt level about the possibility of storm damage to the main line at Dawlish cutting off its main fleet base at Plymouth from re supply of ammunition / fuel and Stores etc. As a consequence in 1946 and 1947 my Father and other Staff were employed, in gangs of 12 men, every weekend for 2 years in bringing the Teign Valley line - from Newton Abbot to Exeter St Thomas, via Lustleigh and Trusham up to main line standards ! With the expectation of heavy ammunition trains the existing line - mostly single track with passing loops at Stations - was deemed to not be up to those specifications ! So every under bridge and drainage culvert and embankment was strengthened to be able to cope with extra weight plus passing loops were lengthened. The Teign Valley line was closed to traffic at the time of Beeching cuts but after then it was occasionally used for the Royal Train to be stabled at night when on tours of the West Country, until the track was finally lifted. Had it been kept ready on a care and maintenance basis - as many military bases were, the West Country could have had continuous traffic during the recent period of closure. I remember my Father and his mates cycling home after a gruelling days work with pick and shovel absolutely worn out and this went on for 2 years. It is a prime example of the folly of Government short sightedness when Beeching was brought in ! PGH

Wow I cant see that surviving the winter.

i would have thought that if the waves are crashing into the wall that does not have any deflection at the top of the wall then the waves are going to carry on breaking over the wall and onto the rail-line and station.............. next time they do the wall which will happen build some deflection into the wall so when the waves crash against it the waves will deflect back out to sea

the question is. why would they build a railway near to the ocean. they must know that this will happened as soon as the station ready to get more visitor

If the govt needed convincing a new line further inland is necessary, then this is great evidence. This line should be turned into a light railway for tourists - it won't last. The line has done its job but now Plan B should be invoked.

They need to rename Dawlish as washing machine station.

Ummm... when this line was built they had never heard “climate” & “change” in the same sentence! Hopefully if am inland route is ever built, they will retain the line through Dawlish for calm & sunny days.... ( yes , they really do have them in the UK 😁)

I wonder if this damage has anything to do with the tracks being located next to the ocean? 🧐
